Death Stranding
Can Hideo it?

One of Eurogamer's games of the year.

I've already decided I'm going to rebuy this on PC next year, so that I don't have to fight against the controls (and the Dualshock, which is possibly my least favourite pad ever), and can enjoy the game all over again.

Quote:
I can completely understand why people bounce off Death Stranding, and even its most ardent fans will admit it's too bloated for its own good, but I also wouldn't have it any other way. When its long ending was over, I still wanted more from a game I didn't know I'd even enjoy until making my first delivery - more rickety driving, more slow pondering walks, one more overambitious cargo run in the pouring rain.

I saw that, which makes me wonder why it only got "recommended" in the review.

Different people have different opinions, I imagine. I don’t think it’s a desirable goal for a given publication to have an enforced, consistent hive mind across all its writers.
I'm not convinced a review site should be inconsistent.

Fuck the Dualshock as a pad though, the XBox design is so much better.

Yeah we get it.

The problem with that is, all reviews are subjective by their very nature. The only way a review site could be consistent is by having exactly one reviewer. And then it's only consistent to that one reviewer's taste in games. As soon as you get more than one reviewer there is going to be inconsistency.

Reviews will always be subjective and inconsistent as long as different people have different opinions.
They'll always be subjective, but they're only inconsistent if you have multiple reviewers giving their opinions on one game

It totally sucks though!

They’re the worst. ‘Legs’ are too short and non-ergonomic, awkward shape. Buttons and sticks in horrible places.

Awful, Giphy. Awful.

It doesn’t. The buttons on the Xbox one pad though? They suck dick. Don’t bother trying to play anything that requires twitch reflexes. I’ve been playing Bloodstained and despite playing with two separate pads I’ve missed countless jumps thanks to the shitty buttons. Or maybe there’s some weird lag going on. Either way I’d rather play with a cheap third party alternative but you’ll be lucky to find any of those that’s wireless these days!

I've never had that problem using either the standard or elite xbone pad. Wired on the pc, mind. Perhaps other things in your setup are to blame.

Yes that's about the size of it :)

There were times during marathon The Last Of Us or Death Stranding sessions where I stopped playing because it was getting up to bedtime, but also because my hands were bloody well hurting and it was nice to be able to put the hateful pad down. (Which probably needed charging anyway thanks to the appalling shit battery life.)

I've never, ever liked the design, going right back to the PS1 days before they even added the analogue sticks.
You can get adaptors that let you use the XBone controller with a PS4.

Not sure what they do about the touchpad though.
The PS4 controller has... a... touchpad??
Today I learned!

I thought that was just a speaker.
No it's the world's worst touchpad, to accompany the world's worst speaker which also drains the battery like a bastard if you dare to, y'know, actually use it.

Did I mention I'm not a fan of the Dualshock? I feel like I probably should.
PC version of this launches tomorrow.

Currently a lot of stuff is still under embargo in terms of showing screenshots or footage, but by all accounts it's PS4 level visuals with a couple of minor enhancements available, but of course with the resolution and framerate your PC can handle. (This is no bad thing, as the PS4 version is absolutely jaw-dropping in terms of shinies and visual fidelity.)

Most interestingly, it doesn't look like any sort of mega powerful kit is required, with 1080p@60FPS being within the reach of fairly modest hardware, and an RTX2060 being able to kick out 4K@60FPS.

Also, even though the PS4 has eight (weak) CPU cores, they've rejigged their code to utilise the far greater IPC that PC CPUs tend to have, so the game runs fine on quad core CPUs.

I suspect I'll give this another playthrough, the main draw for me is K+M for the controls as I struggled terribly with the pad at times on PS4, especially during the combat sections.

The framerate I'm not too fussed about, it's not a fast paced action game and the totally solid 30FPS on PS4 Pro with a decent motion blur implementation made the game entirely tolerable in that regard, obviously I'll take the bump to 60FPS though.

This is currently going for £27.49 on both the Epic Games Store and Steam.

I've had in my head I want to play this again on PC as I did struggle at times with the controls on PS4 Pro due to my general shitness in these types of game with a pad.

For anyone who still hasn't played this, it's a genuinely wonderful one-off videogame experience IMO, definitely worth taking a look at.
This game has sexy tardigrade eating.
This is an incredibly badly written sack of shit. I like the world, when the game's not nagging me constantly with mail and voice messages. I can understand how Mr Rope wanted to get away from all that shit and wander in the wilds on his own. Of course you can't even do that anymore without seeing a sea of icons from the thousand other people who've climbing that particular rock before you.
Every single music track that starts playing as you're wandering the wilds sounds like a piano gently rolling down a cobbled street while an old lady with a gammy hip zimmerframes her way after it complaining to herself under her breath.
This is the worst written game I've ever played. And I've played Tokyo Hosto.
Worse than Dare Devil Denis?
If I'd've played that, yes. I'm still in the same cutscene as my post an hour and half ago. Well , I say "in", but it's playing in the background while I do something more constructive like counting my rice and sticking my sweetcorn back onto the cob.
I think it might be finished! Although I've thought that more than twice during this entire shitshow. I'm on to the third credit scroll of the game where Hideous Pachinko's name appears in massive capital letters about five times.
I was wrong. Still going.
Currently free on the Epic Store!
