DLC. Let's chop up games piecemeal and charge extra for them!

I... I just can't even...

Of all the people to think DLC was bad, I didn't think you'd be one of them.

DLC isn't inherently bad. Companies may do bad things with it, but that doesn't mean it can't be good.

HD isn't inherently bad either. And anyway the first true HD console is the PS4, of course. ;)
Anyway, before the 360 we had DLC, it was just called expansion packs and came on discs.

The Wavebird on the Gamecube came before this and some would argue, was quite popular but it doesn't matter. When one company innovates, another imitates.

There were a few different wireless pads for the Mega Drive too. The ones I had were unofficial, but there were these too -

Really? How come?

It took graphics - and arguable consoles - in a direction that concentrated muscle power on the number of pixels on the screen rather than what those pixels were doing.

In most cases details are important to how things look, not resolution. After all, what looks more realistic - a super-4K PC game or a DVD?

I agree, I loved that robo office game on the techno hat, that was not HD. (i could be wrong, it has been known)
It's definitely HD in resolution terms, but would still be playable at SD. But I don't think that's the point

The Atari had wireless joysticks too but like the Megadrive pads, they weren't exactly popular.... Still cool though!
Apparently if you plug the PSVR into any HDMI source (ie. XBone or PC) it goes into cinema mode.

Release the hackers!
Sony did use the PS4 to push the Blu-Ray format, not a first for the format, but the decision that won the format war (Vs HD-DVD)
TheJacket wrote:

I thought the decision that won the format war was all the publishers choosing Blu-ray?
more down to the number of players that were out in the real world, PS4 being a "media hub" and millions sold, publishers picked the format they could make money out of....
You mean PS3, right? HD-DVD was long gone before the PS4 came along.
i DO mean the PS3
I often wonder how that particular format war would have gone if the 360 had had the HD-DVD drive internally, right form the start.
DavPaz wrote:

It would have meant the 360 wouldn't have enjoyed its large price advantage over the PS3, and I think that might have handed the generation to Sony. Microsoft were very much the underdogs at the time, and the $599 PS3 price point was a big part of why Sony failed to gain early traction.

Agree but if people play 'Monopoly' correctly (eg auctions if someone doesn't buy a property; no fucking money on Free Parking; trading all the time; learning the evils of capitalism) it isn't that bad. If you read and play by the rules.

But 'Settlers of Catan' is still the better trading game so play that instead.

The 'Paying your rent"somehow"' rule is pretty good, too.
Mali has played very different games of monopoly to me.

Sorry for continuing 'asides' (mods please split if you want to) but we have played Monopoly once before on one of these nights, it was another 'themed' one (Lord Of The Rings, maybe?) - and we did play some sort of extended and quite brutal ruleset.

Basic stuff like everything going up for auction on a 'no sale' was in place, but there was also all sorts of bartering and trade agreements going on, some of which I'm not even sure is allowed, like 'if you land on my properties you don't have to pay anything but I want Vine Street off you in return', we were kind of playing neoliberal Monopoly. One guy managed to negotiate himself Park Lane and Mayfair with hotels on (much to the protests of a couple of us) following some very tense negotiations, and then everyone managed to completely miss them for about three circuits of the board.

I can't even remember how it all finished as later on the host produced a bottle of some twenty year old brandy that was allegedly worth a lot of cash, I'm not sure it was afforded the respect it was deserved.
I've got a PSVR.

I'm not exaggerating when I say that its the best gaming experience of my life. And worth every penny.

It's unlike anything. If PSVR sinks without a trace, then I went down with the best fucking ship ever made.

It's a theme park in your house.

Some people get motion sick, totally. But thats because THERE IS A THEMEPARK IN THEIR FUCKING HOUSE.

Batman is a fucking revelation. 1.5hr experiences like that for £16 a pop will be bought without hesitation.

If ten year old me knew that I had a fucking holodeck...
I'd decided to get one, but the huge amount of rave reviews since launch has meant that any remaining store stock got snapped up.
If anyone spots one online or in stock near Birmingham, let me know.
Totally worth trying it before you buy - if at all possible.

Some people just can't get on it with it seems. They'll become the digital have nots I guess...

That and go slow. My wife first go was Driveclub, and felt ill. But she loved The Heist.

This review sums up my experiences with Rez.
That is a concern, but while stock is very low I'd be prepared to take a risk then resell immediately if I didn't get on with it.
They have bought one at Arcade Club in Bury so I might use that as an excuse to take a drive up there soon.

Fortnight's time any good to you?
They're open in the daytime on both days now.
DavPaz wrote:
Do the move controllers track orientation like the Vive ones? If not, then that's a huge barrier to immersion. How many times did people in the Vive go "Hey, look, there's the controllers, right there!"?

I now know the answer to this question.

Yes. Yes it does.
My chum now has his PS4 technohat despite it being sold out everywhere, as one came up for sale over the weekend on a local buy and sell classifieds forum.

The chap he bought it off suffered terrible nausea almost immediately and after trying it on and off for a day decided it had to go, hence my chum snapped it up.

He reports that it is very impressive although in one of the games he did a funny sort of jump thing (in the game world, not across his living room) which left him feeling sick so he had to take the headset off and give it a rest for a couple of hours, but he's been OK since.

I'll pop round after work one day this week to take a look.
When I played retconned games for my Rift like Mirror's Edge, everything was great until the game took over where you were looking (like on the first level of ME, when Faith hears the other runner shouting at her and looks over).

When the game turns your character's head but you don't turn your own oh holy fuck does that get you wobbly fast.

Yeah. The inversions in the roller coaster sim I tried were awful. Your stomach clenches in anticipation, but it never comes. Stupid lizard brain
Hnghhhhhh.

After really enjoying the Vive at the Cottage, I am tempted by this.

Still probably a bit expensive for now, given the need to buy the camera too, and then probably the Move stick things.
It's in stock at Currys nwo
Currys have a New World Order?

You didn't have any problems at t'cottage though?
I think the only issue anyone had was Jacket after playing spell fighter vr. Which I had prefaced with "this is why there won't be any traditional fpses. You may feel ill."

Although I suspect fpses could be adapted to work in VR.
No inversions at the cottage.

Can be arranged next year!!
Mr Dave wrote:

Something like Damaged Core works really well because it works within the limitations of VR rather than trying to shoehorn it into a standard-style game.

I suppose there will be a plethora of VR only games, like there was for the Kinnect.

I think I'm going to get one at Christmas, if Tesco do their "clubcard vouchers are worth double on electronics" thing again.

I had a DK2, pre-ordered a CV1 and was told I'd be waiting until 2034, or something, so I fucked it off.

Yeah I know you had a DK2. I never knew you cancelled your CV1 preorder, but that makes sense as I couldn't find you to add you to my friends list.
PS - I took receipt of a Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X yesterday (£26 barely used!). It ramps up the immersion factor in Elite Dangerous by roughly a billionty percent.
Aye. Although much of my time seems to be spent changing control schemes rather than playing.

I've just left it on default and blasted through the first training mission. Seems ok so far.
