Despite the fact I said I wouldn’t start any more Netflix Originals in protest for their shit policy of cancelling them after three seasons

House of Cards and Orange is the New Black have both had six seasons, and the latter is coming back for a seventh. The Crown has been renewed for season four. There have been four seasons of Narcos. Sabrina has been renewed for seasons three and four.

Kimmy Schmidt did four seasons. Grace and Frankie has done five and is renewed for a sixth. Fuller House has done four seasons with a fifth in production. The Ranch has six seasons to date with another on the way.

We've had five seasons of Bojack Horseman and a sixth is coming. We’ve had three of F is for Family and a fourth is being made. Big Mouth is getting a fourth season and Disenchantment is getting a second, third, and fourth season.

There’s more, if you’d like.

Good watch about the shit state of streaming services.

I’ll wait for it to be on Netflix. All three seasons.
It appears to be "people on Reddit are mad therefore Netflix is doomed."
*queues up Grace & Frankie and Fuller House*

Ahhhhh that’s better

I thought it was a fairly well argued case. The increase in piracy traffic as streaming services have diversified is interesting.

I know a few folks who of late who have gone back to the mindset of 'fuck it, I'll just pirate it'.
Yet content is easier to access than ever before for the masses. I’m not surprised that people who used to pirate may consider pirating again, but for the majority who used to buy a few DVDs a month, a few subs of a tenner a month is pretty good considering how much physical media and Sky costs.
I genuinely wish I knew how to pirate, there are a few old things I would have to pay a fortune for but would only watch like once with the kiddo

anyway, we only have Netflix and normal NL tv so there is a lot we don't get

Currently watching on Netflix: Hemlock Grove
Currently watching on Netflix with kid: RuPauls Drag Race
Currently watching with husband: DVDs of the Xfiles
I download quite a lot of stuff. I also subscribe to Netflix and Amazon Prime. I don't know where that fits in the milieu of TV financing.

Yes, I thought THE RAIN's first season was pretty good. It's entirely derivative but nicely done, coherent, gives you characters you care about (giving each of the main characters a proper backstory was a lovely touch), who mainly do fairly logical things for believable reasons.

Definitely watch it in Danish with the subs.

Solid 750/1000 material I reckon, I watched the whole thing in about five evenings.

Also, Alba August is a very nice young lady.

SEASON TWO of THE RAIN is on Netflix now.

I will make a start on it this evening and also admire Ms August's loveliness.
Did the first two episodes last night, and it's remaining an excellent programme.

Nothing genre defining or revolutionary, but as per Season One, a solid assembly of all the required components. Also moves the story in a new and interesting direction, and still makes a good call in taking the time to get to know the characters.

Worth the investment of time IMO.
I finished Season 2 of THE RAIN which is not as good as Season 1 but still a decently watchable post-apocalyptic yarn.

It actually moved the story and 'the world' on which keeps the post-apocalyptic bit of the apocalypse interesting, unlike say, TWD which just has the same magical winter-resistant zombies for five thousand years.

Blatant set up for Season 3 (and quite an intriguing one at that), so hopefully there'll be more.
Just started S2 of the Rain. Has anyone noticed that a lot of Netflix stuff seems to be filmed in an aspect ratio wider than 16:9, but not as wide as your classic cinema?

I don’t know if I’m just Unobservant, but I can’t think of any time I have ever noticed what aspect ratio a TV programme or film is in, unless it happens to be where the aspect ratio has changed during the film in which case I tend to spot it.

There has been a resurgence of the 2:1 aspect ratio in the feature film world as well.

It turns out that this aspect ratio is a logical middle ground between the 2.35 and 1.78 ratios.

That doesn't really count as any kind of legit reason for its use though. That article has a lot of what but is very short on why.

It looks a bit more cinematic than 1.78 but still gives a decent amount of screen area?

It's a perfectly good reason. It looks good on big screens and TVs alike with minimal letterboxing. It's a compromise that leaves everyone worse off. The best type of compromise.

How many people are watching House of Cards or Ozark or any of the other 2:1 TV shows in the cinema, do you think?
Is it shot in 2:1, or just edited down to it? If it’s shot that way then it’d represent a monetary saving if shot on physical film, also a saving on storage if shot/stored digitally.

Aw, I hear you there. I got the Columbo Box Set for my maternity leave (Darwin will say in a gruff voice ‘just one more thing’). I’d love it if Netflix would show Murder She Wrote, though, and Diagnosis Murder. If you like Highway To Heaven, that’s on Netflix. If you like crying.

wauw highway to heaven, thats a blast from the past. I was also thinking MASH but not with Katie as that makes me cry as well
I love that Darwin does Columbo :luv: I might just buy the boxset after all
The Crown is brilliant
Jennifer Anniston & *hnnngh* Adam Sandler movie “Murder Mystery” has an all-time highest opener for Netflix with over 30m views.

Adam Sandler will not stop. We must stop him.

The Terminator was added to Netflix yesterday. We just need to divert Arnie to go after Adam Sandler instead.
Let’s ask Reddit if it’s any good:

Quote:
Is this another one of those "Adam Sandler gets his vacation paid for but for some reason still looks incredibly tired" movies? Cause I keep seeing it for 2 seconds on my Netflix homepage before picking something else and he's on a plane and he still looks incredibly tired.

But now he has a mustache?

I'm forced to watch right now, and yes, that is 100% accurate. One hour in and he's mumbling, and I'm scrolling Reddit.

Nice comedy.. had quite a few chuckles.. don't expect too much from it tho..

I honestly didn’t even find it that funny. Thought it was quite the let down. Clue from 1985 was funnier imho.

Quote:
Watched it the other night. It's not horrible, but also completely forgettable. The conceit is entertaining, though not original. A great movie to put on in the background then instantly forget you watched it. It has the depth of a kiddie pool and the flavor complexity of white bread. Pretty much a slightly more advanced screen saver for your TV. Clue is definitely a masterpiece compared to this (and most other similarly genred films). The thing I liked most about it was the pace was pretty solid in keeping things moving. It feels though like a low effort production all around. Even the "major conflict" between Sandler and Aniston's characters felt stakeless. I'd give it a one and a half star (out of five), and only reccomend it as background noise or for half-watching. It's the "easy listening" / elevator music of Sandler movies. Adult family safe for the most part, with some violence (stabbing, shooting, and poison murders), a brief almost-sex scene, and some language.

Well it auto played on me last night. I didn't chose it but it certainly got itself chosen.

Quote:
I put it on for background noise while doing other stuff around the house.

Stumbled across it Saturday morning with my kids. We all enjoyed it, and it was fun watching them work through a murder mystery. Sure, it's not going to win any film awards, but it was comical, interesting and fun for the whole fam. My son's already watched it a second time.

Perfect Netflix movie. You can watch it with your brain half off and follow it completely. Doesn't feel like an investment to turn it on and give it a shot.

Quote:
I laughed at one of the jokes. The movie doesn’t really try to be more than exhale through your nose funny.

I noticed that too. It's not like they tried to be hilarious and failed, they just truly attempted to make a ridiculously-light comedy. It's almost more like an adventure film

So there you go, a sample of the top comments.

I’m definitely looking forward to watching it.
Let’s ask Reddit nothing
Interesting mix of stuff added to Netflix today. Some of the additions -

- The Hunger Games films. Never actually seen any of them, so might give them a go
- All the Fresh Prince episodes
- District 9
- Dark Crystal
- In Bruges
- Final Destination 5. Although once you've seen one, you've pretty much seen them all
- Serenity
New Stranger Things on Thursday!
I've not seen any of the Hunger Games films either, I'll be giving them a whirl.

I'm sure my Younglings will be watching Fresh Prince.

Oh yeah!

Happy! Season 2 to watch too.
Netflix has been plastered with promotion for a new Shaft film with Samuel L, and it looks quite funny. Is it a case of the trailers showing the best bits or, if you've seen it, is it any good?

Mr Chonks wrote:
I wouldn’t mind three seasons per show if they didn’t leave them ending on cliffhangers and had proper conclusions.

I agree with this, a nice tight and well planned story with an actual conclusion would be far better than either being dragged out almost indefinitely until the show far outstays its welcome (like Supernatural) or leaving us hanging without resolution (like lots of other shows that I've forgotten). I find that I'm reluctant to start a new series because of this uncertainty and don't want to spend time getting into something that may have a limp and unsatisfying end [title]
I watched Dead to me, which I thought would just be a two women cheering eachother up thing, but had a lot more story and twists in it and I quite liked it
I watched Alias Grace, I enjoyed the oldy worldy and the fact that you only hear one side of the story of the lead up to a double murder so you never know if she is speaking the truth
I watched the Alienist, again oldy worldy profiler of a serial killer, thought it was pretty good

tried an episode of the missing (?) but couldn't keep my attention
tried an episode of Happy but couldn't get in to it

currently watching The Bodygard about uk police bloke and terrorism
Good start to Stranger Things with Episode 1.
MrChris wrote:

Be a bit weird if they started with Episode 4.

That said, it never hurt Star Wars.
Stranger Things 3: the scene with the Coke is really, really fucking weird. It’s like an advert for Coke in the middle of the programme. Other than that, it’s been mostly excellent, especially since season 2 was a bit disappointing and not very memorable. The CGI monsters still aren’t very good or convincing though.
Couldn't help noticing that the cans had the stay on type of ring pull. I don't think they had these back then did they? Ruined the whole thing.

Available since the mid-70s. Not common in the UK until early 90s
Finished Stranger Things 3. It was good and very watchable but lacked the certain something that made season 1 so utterly fantastic. Basically I’ve boiled it down to three possibilities:

1) Winona Ryder did the troubled mother act so perfectly and is now relegated to kooky mental magnet loving bad mother who apparently leaves her family to venture across country without even picking up the phone. There’s some good performances still but nothing that elevates it to gobsmacking.

2) Too many fake outs. It’s soooo lazy. The last episode is packed to the brim with them: The kids wait behind a car as the bad guy closes in! The bad guy pokes his fleshy arm around! The kids are gone. The kids wait behind a counter as the bad guy closes in! The bad guy pokes his fleshy arm around! At the last minute someone distracts the bad guy. The kids wait in front of a car as the bad guy is about to drive into them! The bad guy puts his foot down! The kids are saved at the last minute. Etc etc

3) Not many meaningful deaths. Those that are here aren’t very good either apart from the guy who the Terminator shoots and even that was ever-so-slightly laboured over to be a shocking death.
I liked S01 and S02 of Stranger Things but haven't bothered with S03 yet for some reason, although I guess that's an indicator of how bothered I am about it. I wonder if it's a bit of a 'lightning only strikes once' kind of deal, like The Matrix.

Anyway, if you want something good to watch on Netflix I'd really recommend giving DARK a try. It's GERMAN and features GERMAN BOOBS, along with attractive Teutonic GERMAN women who appear to be very well constructed, like a 1980s Mercedes.

It's kind of like a cross between Stranger Things and Twin Peaks (shit description I know), it's ostensibly a sci-fi type affair but there are lots of dark human relationships and history and secrets, there's a whole time travel thing going on as well.

I binged on Season 1 and will start on Season 2 shortly. It's got an English dub but I watched it in GERMAN with English subtitles, it's quite talky in places so there are lots of subs.

Good watch, I really enjoyed Season 1.
we loved Dark S1 will watch S2 soon

Finished Bodyguard and highly recommend it
