Marvel Cinematic Universe spoiler thread: discuss all films
Avengers/Cap/IronMan/GotG/etc
Reply
I'm fed up with the spoiler tags in the movie thread, and anyway this can be a thread to itself.
Hmm - what if I want to discuss (say) Deadpool but haven't seen Cap3?
I guess I agree that Civil War was very much a Captain America movie, but there was plot critical Avengers stuff that happened (and how will they reconcile wanting Avengers 3 to make sense for people who have and haven't seen Civil War, without making it feel entirely inconsequential in the long run?). I guess this is sort of a problem for comics, compounded for the movies by the fact that it's trickier to replace an actor than a writer/artist.

I also think that eventually we are going to get an Avengers movie with at least one of the main cast from the first two movies missing. Feels like they need to give Iron Man a bit of a rest at this point, and depending on their contracts there's probably a financial element to these decisions.

Where was Kick Ass/Quicksilver in Civil War?

Is it weird to anyone else that we haven't had a Ruffalo Hulk movie?
Deadpool isn't in the MCU. And if you don't want spoilers for any film you shouldn't be in here. This is pretty clear. Next!

Nim nim nim.

I guess my thinking is - why not a Cap3 thread?
Do you mean cinematic universe? So only the films with the Avengers in? Or any Film based on a Marvel comic?

Yeah I guess it's for these films.

I know that, but the thread title says Marvel Comics Universe, not Cinematic

You touched on this on Twitter and you have a good point. I think Marvel needs to be careful about how much cross-film continuity it introduces; Ultron had too much for my tastes, for example. But it feels like they are taking steps to reduce this: at the end of Ultron Thor and Hulk left, and at the end of Civil War Cap, Falcon, Bucky, et al have all been taken off the stage too. That feels like a conscious attempt to thin the characters out.

Aren't we getting World War Hulk, or have I confused a rumour for a fact?
Malc wrote:

Vindicated.
Aren't there rights issues preventing another standalone MCU Hulk film?

Aye, should probably be corrected for clarity.

Because then we'll end up discussing Dr Strange in the Movies megathread.

I goofed. Fixed.

Obviously that'd get a Dr Strange thread.

However, I'm fully aware that Beex is too lazy ;)

I'm out, then - Cras is moderating this one until the weekend when I see Cap 3!
Here, I can't remember what happened with Gwyneth Paltrow. Did the character leave Tony for some reason, or is there another explanation for her absence?

Busy being dead surely?

Their relationship was strained but recovering. I guess her not being in this one was either Gwyneth being busy or them just showing that he's a bit depressed and disillusioned with Avenging. It gives his character more of a reason to side with the Accords.

And Quicksilver died in Avengers 2, as it was confusing to have him in Avengers and also X Men.

There was a brief comment from Tony himself saying something along the lines of them splitting up because he couldn't give up the hero stuff. At least that's how I took it.
Ha I didn't remember him dying at all. Edit: Doubt it was out of courtesy to Fox though, given how they only put Quicksilver in DOFP at the last minute when he showed up in a Marvel post credit scene, the original script had Juggernaut playing that role, which would have actually made a lot more sense, even though Quicksilver worked too.

Was Civil War the first time Gwyneth Paltrow has been curiously absent? Was that not the case in Age of Ultron too?

I think she was in that briefly, but I could be wrong.

Quicksilver dived in front of bullets aimed at Hawkeye.

Me, too.
They got rid of Hulk and Thor ... Because you can't have a superhero vs superhero film with those two around without either a pretty tasty kill-count or it feeling contrived.

Whichever side the Banner picks wins by default.

I think you're wrong. Was she even in IM3?

Re Thor/Hulk, don't forget the Civil War comics was the introduction of Ragnarok.
She was very much in Iron Man 3. Remember ye not how it ended?
Brad Pitt opens the box and inside... well, I won't spoil it for you.

Was it a penis?
Saw Civil War last night. I think I need to stop bothering with these films, they just don't move me at all. The acrimony between them seemed about as bitter as if one of them had failed to reply to a text message and the ensuing war was just some meaningless noise where nothing actually happened apart from his mate hurt his legs. A few good bits in amongst it all but mostly just the same old shite over and over again.
I found myself having to go online and look things up last time I watch one, think it was the last Avengers film.

Find the Captain America films to be the best once to watch as you just get sick of all the big CGI scenes in the others.

Still you can't knock the people in charge at Disney, they have big money films in the pipeline for years mow with Starwars and Marvel

Found a picture of the timelines for Marvell still plenty to come!
That's missing the recently announced series for The Punisher.

Edit: there's also rumblings that Sony might have got the rights to make a Spider-Man video game, presumably as part of their deal with Disney for the movies. A motion capture artist recently listed "Spider-Man PlayStation game" on his linked in, and not long before took a photo at a Sony motion capture studio on his Instagram. It's also known that Sucker Punch are not currently working of a new Infampus.

Could just be a standalone Spider-Man game, could be tied to the comics, could just be a standard movie tie in, or it could be the first MCU game that isn't just a straight up adaptation of one of the movies done on the cheap.

I know that a while ago marvel said they wanted to get good games made rather than just the licenced tat of the other MCU adaptations, having said that they were disappointed with the outcome of their previous games.

Yeah, I think that's probably what I'm feeling. Nothing in the Marvel films really "wows" me any more.
Guardians of the Galaxy was the last one where I came out of the cinema with a huge grin on my face but I've enjoyed all of them since then.
They are still a very agreeable way to pass a couple of hours.
I'm feeling fatigue with them. They are kind of ok but the weight of all the previous movies and the movies to come is getting a bit much. Plus they are starting to feel a bit samey. Works much better in tv series form this sort of thing if you ask me. Smaller chunks please rather than 2h30 each time.

Did you watch Ultron?
Aye, I just completely forgot that scene.

Edit: The scene where Quicksilver died.

Regarding Paltrow, I think it's just that a lot of these movies are blurring together. Iron Man is in how many of them?
It was key as he saved Hawkeye...

IronMan has been in

IM, IM2, IM3
AA, AAoU
Cap America 3: Civil War

Pepper was in
IM, IM2, IM3
AA

Not sure about AAoU
He had a cameo in The Incredible Hulk, too.
That is not part of the new 'Marvel' is it?

Yes, it is. Just about. You see clips from it playing on a monitor in (IIRC) The Avengers when they are planning on talking to Banner.
Oh right..

I assumed everything after IM was new Marvel and independent of XMen etc

It is independent of X-Men because the X-Men films are made by Fox. See also Spider-Man and Fantastic Four.

Looking it up, they also have the same dude (William Hurt) playing "Thunderbolt Ross" (who in the comics is eventually Red Hulk). He's in The Incredible Hulk as General Ross and Civil War as Secretary of State Ross.

It's also in the "Marvel Phase One" DVD/Blu Ray box set.

I'd also say by virtue of having RDJ's Tony Stark in it, it's straight up part of the MCU.

It's odd because it's also sort of implied to be a direct sequel to Ang Lee's "The Hulk", but only slightly so. There's a few nods to the prior film, and chronologically it would make sense to fit in there.

Obviously they switched actors for The Hulk, but there is more than a few nods to The Incredible Hulk in the other MCU movies. And again, where the character is when he is reintroduced in Avengers Assemble is in line with where he might have been following on from The Incredible Hulk.

It does kind of stick out compared to the others though.
I will watch it again...
We took the Grimlet to see Cap3 (against Mrs Grim...'s wishes, I should add). When asked what his favourite bit was, he said "the bit with Spider-man".
"Which bit?"
Well, apparently, this bit:

Oh dear! Are you in the doghouse now?
