It might be a little bit old now, but I hadn't read this thread for a while - that's interesting reading and I didn't really think about it in much detail before (and of course, I'm no developer or anywhere even close). Thanks for sharing that, I learned some things from reading it and a few of the comments before my poor little mind got a bit too lost in the detail.

Oh, me too. Some of the basic principles I'm familiar with (state management is crucial in the sort of distributed processing systems I do a lot of for my day job.) But I hadn't ever thought about applying those principles to games in any detail. Some of the stuff, like how checkpoints are flexible so the game engine tries to never save a checkpoint in an unwinnable state, is really interesting. Also I'd seen games where the "save my game" menu option would be greyed out - for example, I think in the Fallout and Elder Scrolls games, you can save if you character is in mid-air. But I'd never really pondered why that is.
In better news today, I got a Switch Lite as an early xmas present yesterday! I have mario kart and breath of the wild coming in the post today, and i'll probably get the goose game.

Commutes are looking up :)

In other news, how come Nintendo are still riduculously shit at anything online? Need a Nintendo account to even look at the eshop, but you can't setup an account from the Switch directly? Jesus Nintendo.
I got this for Christmas and I love it.

The loss of old-fashioned save/load functionality (FOR ABSOLUTELY NO GOOD REASON) is one of the most teeth-grindingly annoying things about modern games IMO
In general, when making sweeping statements about how other people are wrong, it’s good form to acknowledge that maybe things are more complex than they appear to you.

For example, consider this:

Sorry I didn't see this reply at the time, hence the delayed response.

That Twitter thread seems entirely reasonable, but doesn't explain games that do have 'save anywhere' functionality, or indeed quicksave/quickload from a single key on PC.

Thinking of games I've played recently that managed to offer 'save anywhere'.

Death Stranding (PS4)
The Outer Worlds (PC)
Dishonored 2 (And Dishonored) (PC)
Zelda Link's Awakening (Switch)

So it's clearly possible across a range of genres and platforms.

From the responses to the Twitter thread it looks like it's something that needs to be thought about ahead of time, and where this is done it's achievable.
I’ve been playing some New Super Mario Bros. U Switch (& New Super Luigi Bros. U Switch). It was fun for about 10 minutes but after that it’s just been fucking boring. I enjoy old Mario games but this seems like a significant step back from the likes of even Super Mario Bros. 3. Why isn’t it more fun!?
I seem to have bought a lightly used switch lite as it was cheap.
What’s worth playing?
Bayonetta 2.

Little Nightmares.

Yes, yes, Zelda; Mario Ody; Xenoblade; Bayonetta 2; Cuphead, i no rite!

As above.

Add Katana Zero.
And Little Nightmares.
Now we’re with more. Any chance on playomg a little mario kart tomorrow.. with gamecube comtrollers?

For balance, I thought it was pretty balls when I played it on the PC. Infuriatingly wooly platforming and nothing much new or interesting about it apart from that (aside from the aesthetic which was pretty nice).
It was alright but it’s hardly an Switch must-have; especially if you’ve got other platforms to play it on too. It’s about £30 on the eShop and £24 on PSN. I’m sure it’s been much cheaper during the sales too. If you’ve played the likes of Inside there’s no reason to play it. And if you haven’t played Inside then it’s £18 on the Switch and the better game.

:this:
I got it for £12 with the DLC, I think.
Bought smash bros second hand for 20 Pounds. Far more fun than i thought actually... characters seem to have far more weight than the wii u version
I’ve been playing Astral Chain.

It’s that Platinum action beat me up which feels and plays like everyone of their other Platinum action beat me ups ... Bayo, Transformers, Nier: Automata, Turtles etc. The USP for this one is two fold:

1) Your guy or lass is chained to an AI character that automatically attacks.

2) Between missions there’s a hub you knob about in and before a mission there’s always a detective section where you enter “detective vision (c)(TM)” and *yawn* talk to people and doss about back and forth doing some stupid shit all the while listening to the typical Japanese anime reams of text about a load of old bollocks.

I wonder if anyone was playing Bayonetta and thought “You know what the downtime between fighting arenas was too short and we need to elongate that so there’s even less time fighting and actually being an action beat me up.

And the fighting is nowhere near as tight and exciting as previous Platinum action beat em ups. Less attacks, next to no combos whatsoever and now with the added intrusion of an AI character attacking too and making a mess of the screen so you don’t know what the fuck is going on. Mind you, it’s tight and responsive and making the last minute dodge and getting the slow down is as exciting as in the other Platinum action beat em ups. But it’s still a mess.

And a confusing mess at that. I’ve played for hours and hours and I’d only just remembered about a whole raft of menus that had gone untouched since the start of the game. That’s the problem with it, there’s too much going on:

Moving and attacking with your character (left stick and right trigger)
Moving and sending and retrieving the AI character (Left trigger and/or left trigger and right stick)
Left bumper is for special moves - each AI has there own so if you want to use it you’ve got to change your douchè and then activate the special...
Moving the camera (right stick)
Changing the AI character for certain enemy types (holding Y down)
Changing weapons (up and down on the Dpad)
Changing health and healing (right on the Dpad and X for using)

That’s just for fighting. Then you’ve got vendors separated by loading screens and running about because these bits are only accessed by talking to certain people rather than in a single menu. You’ll probably want to do each of these between each mission so:

“Cleaning” your AI character - then change menu for...
AI character upgrades - then change menu for...
Adding a “perk” for your AI - then loading screen and run off to...
Buy health items - then loading screen and run off to...
Buy items - but in the same room talk to the woman who...
Sells upgrades to your weapons - then loading screen and run off to...
The bloke who dishes out the missions.

It just feels like playing The Division 2 rather than the new Platinum action beat me up. There’s so much downtime between the Hub, the Investigation and then maybe like 30 minutes later you’ll be fighting. Maybe. It’s not like you can skip any of this, especially the investigation which is often quite obtuse or just requires you to run back and forth across a small area talking and listening. I was stabbing the A button to skip as much as I could before eventually the game ground me down and I started listening to the boring shit. And anyway the action, it’s just alright. It doesn’t feel sexy and action packed like Bayo, and you never feel like you’ve just beat someone into wine. Instead you’re dicking around with the AI character and occasionally wading in and getting busy. Some flying enemies you have to send in the AI because you can barely touch which isn’t half as much fun as beating someone up yourself. And another thing - remember the hell world in Bayo 2? It’s a pretty boring nondescript world most of the time - well this wants to drag you into these boring arenas rather than the much more interesting overworld. You’ll be dragged back and forth to this horrible digital world made of red and an uninteresting skybox. And another another thing - when you should be fighting arenas are often separated by, get this exciting mechanism - STANDING ON TWO BUTTONS... or LINING UP A LINE TO SLICE A SWORD THROUGH 3 LINES ... OR MAYBE 3 BLOCKS ... OR LINING UP A ARROW TO SHOOT AT... OMG ... A FLOATING BLOCK! *explodes*

There’s too much fucking busy work and not enough interesting fighting stuff going on. It’s like online dating: too much endless chatting before you finally get to fuck and then she wants you to go down on her and she hasn’t washed her fanny. Or maybe not, I was ranting so long I just wondering if anyone would read it to the end. Night!

So yeah, it’s alright but nowt special. It’s the same but different but in all the wrong ways.
It certainly earned a lot of words!

Kids get some fucking cool stuff.

What's the Switch connection here?
“Nintendo” Switch, you obtuse shit.
Oh cool, I can post stuff about Game and Watch or N64 in here.

I was genuinely asking because I thought I might've missed some Switch connectivity that the advert didn't cover. But fuck you as well!

I'm going to start posting about TVs in the "Sony" PS4 thread as well. Also asking questions about Windows in the Xbone thread!

Why don’t you use the N64 thread? Y’know, the one you made.

Why didn’t you use the general Nintendo thread for your crap non-Switch-related content?

Didn’t sound genuine, but for completeness, there’s no Switch connectivity that I’m aware of after watching the same YouTube video I posted, and presumably you watched as well, that doesn’t mention any Switch connectivity.

Because it doesn’t exist, presumably, unless you can provide a link.

It doesn’t cost you money to make new threads, you know. Instead of cluttering up our nice Nintendo Switch-branded thread about the Nintendo Switch console and games available for Nintendo Switch console with your heinous non-Switch-and-only-tenuously-games-related-at-all content.

Standards here have gone massively downhill.
So you accept there’s no general Nintendo thread. Gotcha.

This one seems fitting. I just found it in a search. https://www.beexcellenttoeachother.com/ ... f=3&t=4096
But no general Nintendo thread. Thanks for confirming.

You posted something 100% nothing to do with a Switch in the Switch thread. There’s no high ground here for you.

I mean, you posted it and put it in the Switch thread which does make an implication; I don't think it was a ridiculous question to ask given the context that you gave it.

I’d have used your General Nintendo thread had it not been a fucking fantasy in your head.

And I’ve clarified that there’s no Switch connectivity that I’m aware of. There might be but I can’t bothered to check for you. I’ll leave that bit of research in your capable hands.

There’s loads of them. Use the search.
Having fun, gents?
Has anyone seen the new Nintendo lego? It looks great!

I just spent far too long trying to find a photo of Shigeru Miyamoto in a room with a clearly visible light switch. Turns out, harder than you might think.

Glad you went to all that effort for precisely zero reward. It warms my heart
I’ve been playing The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.

It’s the remake of the 1993 Gameboy OG. I never played the original so I can’t comment on the accuracy but having looked at a couple of videos on YouTube it’s very similar but has some QoL changes.

The graphics are lovely but there’s some frame rate issues in some areas - bit weird for a Nintendo game to be honest. The music is alright in that typical twee fashion which suits the new aesthetic but it lacks that Nintendo goodness that they’re known for.

The game itself is just ... very nice. It’s pleasant. It’s enjoyable. It’s not exactly taxing, mind. It’s just a very pleasant enjoyable relaxing walk in the park, I guess. I’m about 70% through it, I think, and I’ve got the whole map unlocked. There’s some annoyances - there’s some changing weapons around when there’s a few redundant buttons on the pad not being used. I mean, come on, you only get two empty slots for abilities and weapons and I have to choose if I want to jump!? I basically always had “jump” filling one of the two slots and switched between the others. Just irritating really. Those frame rate issues are a minor annoyance too. Some of the boss fights are irritating since they don’t telegraph how to kill them. I went through all my weapons trying to kill this bull guy when I only needed to charge up my sword move which I hadn’t done in fucking hours and hours of playing the thing. And the thing is, a charge move has never worked with ANY other enemy that possesses a shield - so it’s a break in the game logic - nor does the enemy do anything to suggest that I needed a charge attack. Also, the dungeons are mainly just blocks of rooms stitched together which is a bit disappointing, and there’s a guy who will let you make your own dungeon and you just bash a load of blocks together and BOOM you’ve done the job of the devs.

Anyway, I’m really enjoying it and it’s cute and stuff if you’re into that. If you like Nintendo games you’ll probably know if you’ll be spaffing into your pants at a tiny cute Link. I just need a bit more I think.
Prohint: it ate my save, so back yours up if you can.
