You're correct. That is a fact, sadly. Image
Any HMV pre-orderers get theirs this morning, then?

I wonder if it'll have splitscreen...

It doesn't look likely, because all games developers are morons who fail to realise that people like playing games with people who are actually in the room with them.
It's not that simple. Render complexity is mostly based on the number of polygons you are processing. If the game engine is to cope with splitscreen, then it needs to be able to render twice as much stuff as single player. That either means single player is looking half as good as it is capable of, or that the splitscreen needs to somehow reduce visual fidelty over the single player mode. Reducing visual fidelty is tricky to code; worst case, it may involve building two complete set of character models with different poly counts.

Obviously it's not unsolvable, or no 3D game would have ever had a splitscreen mode, but it's not trivial to solve and would take significant effort away from other bits of the game.

My lottery-win-fantasy-dream-house has two projectors rigger up side by side for exactly this. Maybe four.
Not for me, in fact the tracking number still doesn't work.
Still no sign of the postie here, but my hopes aren't high.

Unless he's been delayed delivering millions of copies of GTA, of course.
I'm gonna give Tesco a go at midnight.

But you have beautiful games that are massively polygon rich that do it, and less attractive games that don't bother.

Probably because it comes out on Tuesday.
Crusster, there.
where is my email confirmation of dispatchstation?! has anyone actually had one to say its on the way? other than foolhardy hmv crew.
Every time a new game comes out everyone is banging on about how their confirmation email hasn't came and how they're worried. Then, the day arrives and everyone fucks off to play the game that has inevitably landed on their doormat. Stop worrying.

Less it, I still have nightmares of the lack of confirmation from play.com for my wii.
Wow, the postie's just rang my doorbell to deliver a parcel!

Except it's the binders I ordered for my YS collection :(
Keep watching.

Hm, no, I'd have thought they'd have dispatched it by now. Silly Craster. Oh, oh, you were making a 'joke', were you? Well, try harder.

You don't need this at launch... wait for me!

Sound like a plan!

Surely your lottery-win-fantasy-dream-house would be better with projectors pointing at each of the four walls and chairs laid out in the middle of the room facing outward, so you won't be able to see each other's screen in deathmatches and stuff?
I will be if they don't have any copies anywhere. Many places are saying they have no stock, other than for pre-orders already committed to, until the 5th May. That's a week today.

Also, don't expect it to drop to £20 in a fortnight or owt. COD4 is still full-price, and I can't see how GTA IV will fail to knock its sales into a cocked hat.

how do you get in? trap door in the floor? will the monkey servants be able to use a door like that?
Though a... door?
The screens don't have to take up the whole wall (and, indeed, they shouldn't otherwise you'll pick up your neighbours screens in your peripheral vision and get all disorientated).

Funny you should say that - I've made a bet* with a mate that I'll be able to get a copy for under £20 within a month. Hmm.

* For £1.
Maybe not £20 in a month but I don't expect it to stay full price like COD4 has. Massive blockbusters rarely seem to stay that expensive, supply and demand. I seem to remember Halo 3 getting cheap pretty quick.

FTFY
Perhaps, but from looking at the player figures on MyGamerCard, COD4 and Halo 3 both have 1,000,000+ players. Other 'very popular' games such as Guitar Hero III, Burnout Paradise and COD2 are in the 500,000+ region.

So? Well, COD4 wasn't only released on the 360. It was also released on a format that is starved for quality, new games, but which millions of gamers own nonetheless. Clue: it begin with 'P'. And this meant that you had *Everyone* saying 'OMG COD4!!!' and not just Xbox owners. Just could happen again, I reckon.

Good point, I had in my head co-op team play modes where it would be very useful to glance at team-mates screens. Clearly the correct answer is both!
Please don't have anything daft like 'up to talk'.
Just checked with Blockbusters where I have my preorder and they do indeed have stocks for all the pre-orders and are open at midnight tonight, so I'll be there like the massive spod that I am.

9 hours and 40 minutes to go

Me. Probably...
Although, ask me again tomorrow!
what stores are open at midnight to , you knoe, actually sell copies rather than hand over preorders?

I want it now....I decided i wasnt bothered but then everyone tells me to get it and I really want it now...grr
I'd like to know :this: as well.

I'm gonna try Tesco, but ringing them earlier resulted in "we haven't got any copies in yet, ring back later". I think they thought I was gonna try to get them to sell me a copy early or something so they lied to me.
I spoke to my local Asda here in Cwmbran. For the 360, they go on sale at 12:01 tonight (they are a 24 hour store) for £34.71 and they have "about 60" copies. I neglected to ask about the PS3 version. I'll go there on the way into work tomorrow morning.

Aha - keep me up to date on what they say, will you?
Where is your tesco?
Richard, where did you find the number for your local ASDA?

You're forgetting Halo 3 is a bit poo.

Looking at each other's screens is the best bit! Without it, you might as well be playing in different rooms, fer heavens sake.

Stockton. But I imagine it'll be the same story nationwide. Assuming you have access to a 24 hour Tesco.

I walked in -- the office I work in is in a fairly large commercial shopping centre. I've rung them before though, use the Store Finder on the Asda website. I think it may be an 0870 number but it did connect me straight to the store, not to a call centre.
Yeah they tend to have 0870 numbers, but they go right through.
I couldn't find anything on the ASDA website in the way of a store finder. Only a contact form.

Happily, I Did find this though. The URL suggests that ASDA pay for this, so I'm unsure why it's not clearer to find on their website *shrug*
excellent, there is a 24 hours ASDA right near me.
I might go there, if its sold out, drive one of 2 24 hours tescos that are near me also

then call in sick tommorow.
I put a holiday in :p
Thank God I'm not the only one who's done that!
I'm off work all next week... hopefully it'll be sold out by then so I won't be able to buy it even if I want to.

I've got GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas sitting unfinished! I don't need it! I don't!
how many GTA's have people finished? I never finished any of the 2d ones, but I finished GTA3, Vice City, San Andreas, and Liberty City Stories. Never did play Vice City Stories and I dont think I could play such a bad framerate with shit grapics on the PS2 again so I may have to wait for myself to get a cheap psp.
I've completed the main storylines on all of em except the London packs and LC:Stories and VC:Stories. Tried to get through San Andreas again last year, but on the PC this time, and the graphics looked awful.
I've finished GTA3 and Vice City, (I used a FAQ to find all the secrets and stuff, but completed all the main stuff first) I haven't played SA (because my PC wasn't up to it)

You know you'll crumb suck every little morsel out of GTA4 though don't you. You saucy achievement Harlot!
Aw yea. Every last salty pearl.
I haven't finished any of them, but I recently bought the Xbox Trilogy because I had the misguided idea of trying to play them all through again before IV came out.

I haven't touched them yet.
I see I shall hate you all (more than I do now natch) tomorrow :'(
I've never 100% completed any of them, but I did all the missions on GTA London 1969, London 1961, GTA 3, GTA VC, GTA SA and GTALCS. I only ever got as far as the 2nd city (San Andreas?) of GTA 1, could never get on with GTA 2 for some reason and thought GTA VCS was a load of boring old shit, despite loving all the others.

I bought GTA Advance recently for the GBA. That's shite too, don't bother.
