It's not that simple. Render complexity is mostly based on the number of polygons you are processing. If the game engine is to cope with splitscreen, then it needs to be able to render twice as much stuff as single player. That either means single player is looking half as good as it is capable of, or that the splitscreen needs to somehow reduce visual fidelty over the single player mode. Reducing visual fidelty is tricky to code; worst case, it may involve building two complete set of character models with different poly counts.
Obviously it's not unsolvable, or no 3D game would have ever had a splitscreen mode, but it's not trivial to solve and would take significant effort away from other bits of the game.
My lottery-win-fantasy-dream-house has two projectors rigger up side by side for exactly this. Maybe four.
