Given the low barrier to entry to become a teacher nowadays, I don't think many will come from state schools.

This is probably right. To become a candidate you probably have to spend years and years doing Charlie Work to get the nod and most people simply cannot afford that level of time and commitment* without a suitable income where the future is both uncertain and not a lot of wage once someone is an MP. Having a passive income might help this, as then you get the time to do stuff.

MP's basic pay is just short of £80,000 . For a job requiring multiple skills, deeply unsociable hours, very poor working environments, and in-built lack of job security, I think it's a reasonable price. Just because an MP isn't in the chamber it doesn't mean they aren't working. A lot of MPs' time and effort is spent on constituency work, which these days involves being social workers trying to redress greivances and resolve conflicts between the public and the state, usually when the constituent is at their lowest ebb.
It’s a lot of money but they could probably earn more in the private sector, as per usual.

Goodness. Yes, I agree with that assessment being likely. It just makes me incredibly angry. So, would the interviewer have been in on it, for the question set up?
I've never quite got the fascination with what politicians do in their 'down time' as I struggle to see how relevant it is to their job, unless it's something that speaks to incredibly poor character (like beating up women I guess). But at least he didn't say something completely far fetched like listening to the Arctic Monkeys or bingeing on box sets.
