Currently, stuck inside my mine. Mining whilst waiting for daylight to start building the south tower.

Found this useful image for making circles. Nothing you can't do yourself, but why reinvent the wheel hey?

Lave's guide to getting started
left click - beat shit up.
right click - place shit.
Q. WTF?
A. Ok, your aim before it gets dark is to a) have a workbench and some tools. And a hidy hole to prevent death.
A. First things first you need wood. Find a tree.
Q. Ok.
A. Punch the fuck out of it.
Q. It exploded. That makes sense.
A. Good collect the wooden blocks.
Q. I have wood.
A. Open the inventory (i) and put the wood into the 2x2 craft window. Tada! Planks! you get 4 for each wood.
Q. Yeah!
A. Now place a plank in each square of the 2x2 crafting grid. Tada! you made a work bench. Put it somewhere for the mo. Don't worry where you can always move it by beating it up with your fists.
Q. Ok.
A. Now make sticks. two planks. One on top of each other Like so:
S
S
Q. Sticky.
A. Now by right clicking on the bench make a wooden pick by making a T shape of sticks and planks. Like so:
Code:
PPP
.S.
.S.

It's a pick axe! Use it to mine some stone. You should get cobble stone. Use that to make a better stone axe.

Now start mining a house or building one. Experiment for more craft recipes. Sword, axe and so on can be worked out based on pick axe. If you can't work them out, use the wiki to find out the ones for 'door' and 'torch'. You need them.

If you can't make a door by nightfall for gods sake block yourself inside.

EDIT: Bah, beaten.

EDIT: EDIT: Ignore that kid when he says set to peaceful. The scary start sets the scene. It's important. (At least I think so)

Also something I didn't realise for ages: hold down the left button to mine/gather stuff, don't repeatedly click.

I have built a hut with a workbench. There is a lake outside, and across the lake and up the slope a big, big cliff face with a giant scary gaping cave mouth. Oh no, it is dark! I shall build a door, and stare through nervously. Time to wait for morning in my dark, dirt floored hut...

You know what I love about this game? The fact that it is actually scary despite only being against block-o-men. I haven't felt this nervous in a game since Sentinel or Daggerfall: Elder Scrolls. ("VENGEANCE!")

Can't wait for morning. I'm going mining like Curdie from the Princess and the Goblin. And if they try and stop me, I'll stomp on their toes! You just watch! Um.

So that's approximately £8.50 a game, and he's sold 1353 in the last 24 hours. That's £11,500 and 50p in 24 hours, then. 8)

He must be quite pleased to be earning my annual wage in a day and a half. Blimey.

Lave that video is brilliant. I love how you are giving the tour and then suddenly, an unidentifiable growl and although you try to continue with the tour you also start muttering to yourself about scary creature and not trusting them whilst trying to close all your doors. Brilliant.

Bloody hell. Playing in dark, in bed, on laptop. Just finishing my the first part of my second tower on a foggy day and I realise later than usual that the sun is setting. I turn around and see sitting above my other tower a Creeper. It slowly turns around and looks at me.

Scared me to death, and I was frozen to the spot. Made it back safely though. But I've realised, the open towers give a way into Castle Lavestone.

I am compromised.

EDIT: Fuck me that was brilliant. Spoiler for monster/crafting details

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Foggy again, but I went outside, Saw a spider, killed it netting me enough string for a bow. Now confident ate some pig and went back into fog. Two skeletons were getting near a hole in the cliff face of Castle Laveskull. I managed to kill them but at quite a cost. Then I noticed a creeper. One I managed to lead far enough from my tower before he blew, taking out a huge chunk of the surrounding.

Thinking it was over I immedietly saw another. I quickly ran out of arrows and it was only the quick thinking of using my flint to set a tree on fire that saved me.

Bloody fantastic game.

Yeah, I think it sold for less before, but even so he's raking it in. I really like the fact he puts the stats up. Makes it honest and makes a mockery of how indie's can't make money. The fact that it's alpha and he adds new stuff nearly weekly gives the game constant attention far better than DLC to buy.

Fair play to the guy.

I've just found a vast underground cave complex while I was mining deep down. It's full of skellingtons and frankingsteins and then I found 2 chests with loot in them it are.

Bad luck old boy.

I'm on my fifth night. Built a little wood cabin, now building a small stone keep annex. Got a chest, stove and workbench and have been digging mine shafts about fifty yards away. Found a little coal but not much else so far. I guess if I keep digging I'll hit something eventually.

Lave, how long did it take you to build your mighty Lave Towers? Am I lagging behind? Not run into any monsters yet, though I did see one in the distance. I now have a wooden sword however, to disuade all threats.

Hey kids, why doesn't the stove start half the time? Just put 7 coal in there, nada. Same with 32 wood. I'm very confused. It was working fine earlier.

Holy moley. Just found a massive crevasse deep, deep underground. Must be at least 200 blocks deep with lava running at the bottom.

Bah lost a post I was writing. Did the forum go down for anyone else?

NervousPete wrote:

The furnace only burns when fuel + something you can smelt/cook is in it. If you dump 7 wood and 3 sand in it for example, even if you leave the menu, it will burn happily until it's made 3 sand. Then it will turn off and save the wood for later.

EDIT: Pro-tip, if you want to leave the game, but not pause it, then enter a menu before removing focus. Will keep pottering on. Useful if you are trapped somewhere over night.

Hold down the mouse button, don't repeatedly click. You'll see "cracks" appearing in the surface texture of the block you're focused on.

I cut down loads of trees and tried to build a house but forgot how to do it and then it got dark and something killed me. I respawned and it was still dark so I dug a hole and hid down it. I think it's nearly light now but i can hear something moving around outside :S

Cheers.

Watching that video back made me realise two things:

1) I kept walking past two big coal deposits.

and

2) the one place I didn't look in that video. THE ONE PLACE. Was on top of my little tower entrance. That was where the monster was. Fucking hell!

Oh, how do you tell how long you've got 'til it gets dark/light, or don't you?

Look at the position of the sun, like in real life. A tower on a nearby hill lit by torches is a very useful navigation aid I find.

Dimmers, you're an artist superb, did you know that at http://www.minecraft.net/skin/ you can upload your own skin for your little man? Might be useful if we get a server going.

If not I'll try running one on my macbook. Wouldn't be on very often mind....

I've managed to build a house but i've ran out of wood to build a door so I've blocked off the entrance with some dirt and I'm now waiting for daytime again to go and get more wood. I'll also need to try and find some coal so as I can get torches, I'm currently sitting in the dark.

BLOODY HELL! I was hiding in my house and thought it might be daytime, so I dug a wee hole at the botton of the door area and peeped out. It was bright outside, so I dug out the rest of my door and walked out STRAIGHT INTO A BIG GREEN BASTARD! ARGH!
