Did they not do exactly that with Windows 2000 and ME though?

Nah. 2000 was designed to replace NT which had been around for eons. It was aimed at the business market. Its only when they realised the NT kernel was so great that they finally decided to use it for a mass market OS.

Kovacs Caprios wrote:
Where is it put that they are dropping Vista? MS release a new OS every few years, we have had 4 since the year 2000

I'm sure I read somewhere that they tried to wriggle out of supporting it but were forced to.

Maybe they tried to ditch it earlier? Not sure. Their new ditch date is April 2011.

So the ditch date is 4 years after it was launched? Is that not a resonable time to replace an OS?

Who told you this? Windows 7 is just a rebadged, rejigged Vista. It's basically Vista SP2, but the name had become synonymous with crap (unfairly), so they decided to change it.

Yes. I was thinking about making three more threads just incase anyone missed it.

There is no EOL date for Vista yet. Microsoft are applying their standard policy which is predicated on the RTM of its replacement. There won't be an EOL for Vista until 7 formally goes RTM. At that point it will be a minimum of 3 years mainstream support and then an extra 3 years of extended.

XP doesn't go out of extended support until 2014.

Who's taking bets on what it'll actually be called on release? Windows 7 won't stick.

And stop all updates?

XP is how old now? seven years? something like that. They still update that regularly.

Vista R2, rather than SP2. It'll be about as much difference as there was between 2003 and 2003 R2 - which is pretty significant.

Just asked one of our Architects... and yes Windows 7 is new from the ground up.

It might share a few XP/Vista components but other than that.. tis new!
User avatar
That is a flat-out lie, Kovacs.

Edit: To be as clear as the others, there has been no ground-up rewrite since the original NT 3.1. Everything since is incremental improvements (or fuck-ups).

The actual version number is 6.1 though, rather than 7 which is just the name.

I know our architects have been working with MS to develop Windows 7, so I do tend to believe them.

You need to tell your architect he's an idiot or he's been flat out lied to. This is totally untrue.

You shouldn't. They're lying to you (intentionally or not).

The architectural changes aren't even that significant this time; GDI+, the Aero composition engine, DirectX BigNum, Windows Driver Model, the list of Big Changes this decade is large, but it was all pre-7. There was more new stuff in Vista.

Didn't we establish previously that Kovacs's architects are idiots?

Why can't they make OSes to be more fun? Fuck all of this Minority Report yearnings, I want just a huge picture of Stephen Hawking's face in the middle of the screen, where you have to tickle his earlobe to hear what Zardoz just typed here, poke his left eye and scream binary at the screen to do a report, and pluck his nostril hair to wank to porn. Is that too much to ask?

Also, unless they've been designing buildings, I think they may be lying about being architects. :)

Only in the same way as software engineers are liars.

That term's almost accepted by everyone except the hardest-core of proper engineers now though, MS need to co-opt "us" into another industry.

Fun? I'm having a fucking hoot!

And the hilarious thing is I can run XP on my desktop and it's faster than my 3GHz Windows box.

Let's let big Steve have the last word on this, shall we?

Steve Ballmer wrote:
Ballmer was asked why Windows 7 is considered a major release instead of just the second rev of Vista. His reply: “It’s not minor because it’s a lot more work than a minor release. It’s a major release.”

Ballmer also noted that Windows 7 will improve the operating system shell. “Windows 7 will be Vista, but a lot better,” he said, noting cleanness of user interface. Is this fit and finish improvement? Gartner analysts kept referring to Windows 7 as a release candidate 2.

A major release? Check. A ground-up rewrite? Not a chance.

No, because they fit your Windows.
User avatar
At least we know now that Kovacs' architects couldn't find their arses with both hands even if they were bum architects and not software ones.
User avatar
To be fair, bums could do with some re-architecting. The design so far is pretty poor.
User avatar

I never cited them as the ulimate source of knowledge, i have to use them as a source of knowlege as do most companies... I can provide a link so I see what you are on about..

I remember out lead Arch givinging us a presentation on Windows 7 a few months ago, and yes it will share companents with Vista, in the same way that cars all use wheels.

Windows 7 will use the same unified driver architecture as Vista to allow for compatibily of hardware.

I could be wrong, I sometimes am, but having been told enough times that it will be a lot different from Vista.
User avatar
Heh, I've no idea either way. Funny thread though :)
User avatar
in which case, can someone write me a script that will look to see what pictures are being accessed through a link in a directory, and copy them over to a new directory called "public" for my website, please?
