To be fair, your car was built in the early 90s I assume? That was before cups were invented.

The floor/carpet looks like it might be alive.

Sorry to hear about your car/cash troubles, Myp. Plenty of people manage without cars though, hopefully it isn't too much of a burden.

Myps car issues aside, the last two pages have made me proper lol

It's ok, there's no carpet, what you're seeing is mostly rusty metal which is, of course, completely sterile.

@myp get yourself some rolling scrap, late 80s early 90s non luxury Jap or German. They go on forever and parts are cheap. They look like shit but you get to be inflamed with incandescent rage and indignation when some petty arse hole complains that it's parked too near their flat and "looks like it's been stolen and abandoned". The fucker sees me driving around in it and it's a public Street with no parking restrictions. Prick.
Plus at that age they've accrued enough "driving this so I don't buy a new car" to off set the carbon foot print of a chain smoking dinosaur and enough misdirected anthropomorphic love to actually have a soul. Cars that go to scrap too early don't get into heaven.

Aye, I'm actually looking at c2000 VW Bora TDI 1.9. a bit better looking than the Mondeo estate, but I've still not ruled that out.

Factory ordering cars is ridiculous. It took skoda a full 5 weeks to assign a build week, and even now that's happened they can't give me better than "delivery probably in June".

I'm sure there wouldn't be a problem if everyone else in Europe hadn't also decided to get out of diesel at the same time.

Meanwhile the cut off date for altering the disco spec was brought forward 10 days. Hopefully that's the Jag sales slump working in our favour and the build/delivery have also been brought forward!

I realise this is problems scaling new heights of first-worldness, but who has to wait this long for anything anymore!?

Haven't got rid of the Merc yet. Need to wait for the V5 to come back as I stupidly didn't change my address on it. Then I need to take my private plate off. So might be a while yet.

I wish I'd taken a photo of my first car, just before I got rid of it. It was a Cortina 1.3 Mk4 and had originally been a shitty beige colour, but as it began to rust quite seriously I was able to replace quite a lot of the rusty bits from scrappers.

When it finally went, its bonnet was turquoise, the front passenger-side wing was mostly black, but with various spots of white undercoat and the driver's door was red with a rather stylish black coach stripe near the bottom. All the seats were black vinyl, except the driver's seat that collapsed one day while I was driving it, and was replaced with a very grand beige seat from a Granada Ghia. From the day I bought it, it had a bit of a leak in the top left corner of the windscreen, but it was only really a problem when turning right in the rain, when it would drip onto any passenger lucky enough to be in it, on their left knee. The heater never worked, even after reverse flushing, so we had to wrap up really well in the winter months.

I had it nicked when it was parked outside the Turner's Arms, a gay pub near Piccadilly, one Saturday afternoon (,....... stop me if I've told you this before) and I couldn't help having a little chuckle to myself when I went into Bootle St nick to report it as stolen, when they asked me if I could describe it. It was found the following day a in Cheetham Hill. The rozzers called me and told me to collect it quickly before someone else took it, seeing as you could easily unlock the doors with just about ANY key that you could insert into the lock.

This is probably isn't something I should go and take a look at.

I drive past the garage on the way home if I go over the coast.

Bet it does 14mpg or something.

Yep, would possibly be the best 14 miles you've ever used a gallon of fuel for. Although you'd only keep it for 3 weeks when reality set in.

My colleague says they use rear live axles and that these are rubbish, and that I would most likely disappear over the side of the mountain on my first drive home.

Then he sent me a link to this:

I like the ones in the video who, having made it abundantly clear that they have no business showing off by trying to do skids, immediately try to recoup but just double down on their utter shiteness instead.

I see one driving every day on the way home, and have often wondered why it's being driven at such a pedestrian pace. Now I know why - guy is not shitting himself all the way home and burning wads of cash for the privilege.

They look sketchy as all hell.

We might, if we actually get bloody organised, be test driving a new one soon. (V8 obvs)

No, because it's much prettier than one of them, and shares a lovely retro styling look with the other.

It's the cleanliness of the lines I like. There's just a single crease along the side, and the hood and trunk lines are similarly simple and unfussy, and the road stance is slightly higher than a modern car that (again) apes the classic look. All the other modern pony cars (including the Mustang and even the other Dodge, the Charger) have curves and creases everywhere, and they all look the same.

I've driven the V6 Charger, the V6 Challenger, the 2l turbo Mustang, and the V8 450hp Camaro SS. I no longer remember if I love muscle cards ironically or unironically, but it all smells like the same burnt rubber at the end of the day.

Hearthly wrote:

The tail squirm out of the Camaro SS under full acceleration in Sport mode was breathtaking. You were very, very aware of how powerful it was -- it squats down on the rear tyres and just wiggles like mad. I assume they're tuned this way on purpose. I didn't have the cojones to go for Track mode and turn the traction control off entirely. I'm sure I'd have put it backwards through some scenery.

I drove past the dealer's forecourt on the way home and the Mustang did look absolutely splendid. With a tremendous force of willpower I drove past and didn't stop.

I'm just thinking in my head of the gargantuan road tax costs, equally ridiculous fuel costs (I reckon it'd easily triple my fuel bill), insurance costs, the fact it's ten years old with 60K on it, repairs would be troublesome and expensive, and so on. I'm not sure what the reliability is like on them either. Plus consumables like tyres and brakes would be very expensive.

On top of all that I'd lose out big time on practicality from the Leon.

I think they look really cool though.

It's a fair point, the fact the Mustang is available here officially is a powerful factor.

Because when you're buying a V8 gas guzzling car with crappy visibility to drive down London roads narrower than it is, obviously, practicality is top of mind.
