I get RSI just looking at the joycons.

I'm waiting till they make a home console version that comes with a pro controller.

I just noticed now, after more thinking about buying the switch someday, that the joycon doesn't have a proper d-pad. WTF?? This makes no sense. I'm mostly into retro platformers, and now my interest in the console is almost 0. Was it really hard to have a d-pad instead of those buttons with arrows?

It's possible to buy third party shells that also have a proper D-pad. Such as this:

https://fr.aliexpress.com/item/D-PAD-Ve ... 36174.html

Naturally you'll void your warranty if fitting such a shell.

I had this concern but after using it, it's not really a problem. The buttons can still be used like a D pad and it's not as cumbersome as it looks.

It also depends on how each game detects the analogue dead zones. Some 2d games with digital controls work fine with analogue sticks (e.g. hollow knight), but most don't.

First thoughts:

It's so effin' cute. Love the joy cons, love it in both handheld and tabletop mode. Haven't tried it with a TV yet as there isn't one in the house yet. It's both bigger and smaller than I expected, which isn't possible I guess, but it is.

Slight niggles: the wrist straps are very tricky to get off once you've put them on, and the release buttons don't actually do anything to assist in this mode. You just have to make sure they're unlocked and pull hard, which I didn't want to do in case I broke them.

Also I understand why the charging port is on the bottom, but it makes playing in tabletop mode while charging impossible.

Mario is pretty joyous so far. Apart from that, Zelda, Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart, what should I be looking out for. I see NBA Playgrounds is 50% off at the moment, any good? Can I justify triple-dipping on Rocket League?

Is anyone going to pay £20 a year to play online?

We raced to completion! Nothing about moving in. I completed way before Joans and he's just sad he can't complete yet.

Ahahah.

I didn't even bother setting up an online account on my switch, such is the general patheticness of Nintendos online offering.

They haven't announced any details but from what I remember, there were rumours of Nintendo giving you old games to play while you were subscribed to their online service. I'm a sucker for Nintendo too so of course I'll pay!

From the games you mentioned, Zelda is a must buy to start you off. It's glorious.

I guess you need them for some two player games as it gives you extra shoulder buttons.

Sorry, I thought you literally meant the strap that goes on your wrist, rather than the buttons themselves (which I do use, but without putting my wrist in the thingy)

I can see how it would be confusing - the whole device is called the joy con wrist strap.

Not sure. Will have to investigate. I should probably read some game reviews.

I haven't played much yet -- Odessey is eating my time -- but this seems very fair based on what I've seen http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017- ... tle-review

Also this is very charming: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2018- ... io-rabbids

It's a party game. Great fun for showing off the Switch and the controllers but it is of limited longevity. Only get it if it's cheap I reckon.

This looked interesting enough for me to keep it, but thanks to Mario Odyssey, I've not even opened it yet.

Maybe. I got a few of those for the Wii and Wii U and barely played them.

Nintendo have just announced Nintendo Labo. It's cardboard toys that you can make that will interact with the Joy con's. It looks really interesting!

welcome Myppie!

Online is very stable but limited... splatoon 2 needs online, and mario kart now bores me if not online (good feature, if you wi9n 150cc cups in now lets you win the others o you don't have to play them)

Tiple dipping on rocketleague: docked looking very basis... but the ability to play in online is glorious (and it was discounted recently, so theni it's ok).. 1-2 switch fun as well (but not for 50 pounds)...

and Arms.. get arms!

You'll be able to buy the games separately on a single game card/cartridge and the templates for the cardboard will be made available as free downloads for you to make up the parts yourself. You will though also need to provide your own string and rubber bands. :) I can just imagine this being covered on Blue Peter ........

I've just read that this is apparently, not true. They won't be offering the templates to download.

And if one person scans the prints they're available, aren't they? (and won't they make it available in the shop then?)

This is madness. Just think of it as the most comfortable portable ever made that also happens to have TV out.

The Switch is DS levels of good.

I'm really starting to think it may become my favourite console ever made. It's at the very least, the best first year of any console ever.

The games will still be as good when they make a version of it that is just a home console that comes with a proper controller. I played Zelda on the Wii U anyway. I will obviously eventually get one, but for Nintendo's last three handhelds I have always bought the initial revision, then ended up getting the much nicer revisions. I'm happy to wait this time.

That's a fair shout. It's what I used to do. This is the first Nintendo home console I've ever bought in the year of release and I'm very happy.

So it's slightly less unconfortable than the DS lite?
