You don't need to be an audiophile to notice that Bluetooth sounds terrible. I'm certainly not an audiophile and FLAC files can go die in a fire. Give me LAME v0 mp3 any day.

But every time i see someone using bluetooth headphones on the street i get the urge to brutally roundhouse kick them. Even if it's an old man or a child.

I saw a bloke walking down the street the other day with one of those bluetooth speakers that look like a pringles can on a strap around his neck, playing shitty hip-hop out loud. I really, really wanted to kick him.

Now that is roundhouse-worthy.

Also, I'm still bewildered by the new Apple wireless headphones that just hang on the wearer's head, looking like there's a tiny white robot trying to pull itself out of their skull. Bud earphones are forever falling out of my ears. With nothing attaching those to my person beyond my own ear wax, I can't imagine going any longer than a week without losing one down a drain.

I use a bluetooth dongle to stream music to my stereo from various devices. Sounds fine to me.

Why?

They have a much bigger digital blueprint without any serious improvement. Audiophiles swear by them, but maybe unless you have equipment worth of 10000€ or something, i'm not sure there's any difference.

As for bluetooth, i didn't know beforehand there was a compression issue with the technology, so i hadn't any bias. It just sounded wrong right away. Obviously some music is more affected than others. Over-compressed modern pop rock will sound equally shit anyway.

If i listen to some busy, overlayered, black-metal or post-metal or something, there's so escape that it will sound a mess over bluetooth. I do remember trying the latest Primordial album over my friends house on one of those bluetooth logitech speakers and the noise was unintelligible. It sounded like what people who don't know black metal think black metal sounds like. Even if primordial isn't that much black metal anyway.

It's also probable that some bluetooth adapters sound much worse than others, they're having to output an analog signal so I there are bound to be some differences.

Well, yeah, all of that's true, but it's horses for courses innit? If you want to make a full quality digital back-up then it's the way to go; or if you're a full on audiophile as you say. There's nothing wrong with FLAC per se, you just need to use it appropriately like anything else.

Sure, but just like RAW or TIF, people swear by them because they're lossless. I'm not going to edit the mp3 anyway, so i don't care they're lossy. I'd rather have smaller files.

Besides, some time ago i noticed there are some people that think JPG's degrade over time, even if they're not edited, as if they're a physical thing. I have the impression some people think the same about mp3.

:this: indeed. I'd be losing them weekly, if not daily.

And the Bluetooth speakers that look like a Pringles can on a strap around yer neck are clearly today's Ghetto Blasters.

As teens, when going to parties my best mate and I used to buy a bottle of QC Rich Red Ruby fortified wine ( :spew: ) and get pissed really quickly and cheaply. When I couldn't take that any more, I found that two cans of Carslberg Special were enough for a really good night, and my fellow teens didn't look at me like I was some wino off the street. Well, not because of what I was drinking, anyroad.

Mind you, we didn't have Spotify in them days.

It's why I'm not fussed on the advances of gaming technology too much. I remember when I used to play the Warriors Orochi games on the 360 - they looked pretty good from where I was sat on the sofa, but I remember at one point I went to grab something that was in front of the telly and then noticed just how good the game looked. All that extra detail is just wasted on my crappy eyes. :)

Never been too fussy with headphones either - I currently have a set of bulky RF ones, where the quality isn't great, but at least means I can wander away from the PC all round the house listening to music (never really been one for having music on mobile devices).

I spend loads on wine in restaurants or for gatherings, but if I'm in the pub I just drink house white. That's probably related to the effect Marlboro has on Marlborough, mind.

It's very sweet because of all the sugar needed to make it that alcoholic.

Barley wine is big again now. Loads of craft brewers are making it.

Dogbolter! Happy memories of watching norwegian feeds of premier league football in a pub in Broomhill with Radio 5 commentary! Oh, 1998 was a good year.

Going back to Bluetooth: there's no single kind of "bluetooth audio streaming" so blanket statements about it being good or bad aren't very useful. There are multiple subtypes of streaming format that vary by device, with any two in a pair negotiating the type of stream depending on their capabilities. Notably, these have improved significantly in terms of sound quality in recent years (and they were pretty crummy in the past.) For example, if you have aptX support with an Apple device, the phone will stream the AAC music file directly to the Bluetooth endpoint -- there is no recompresson. My Bose QC35s sound great on Bluetooth, and I'm fairly picky about this stuff (I once accidentally blind tested on myself the difference between LAME mp3 and FLAC. And I could tell the difference.)

HEARTHLY'S TOP TIP:

Chopley's Awesome Playlist works tremendously well with Burnout Paradise Remastered. (CAP is now at 362 unique artist tracks, and expands regularly.)

Paradise's soundtrack isn't bad, but it's no Revenge, that's for sure. And TBH it gets tired long before the game does.

So stick CAP on play from your device of choice (I use my PC and its nice 2:1 speaker setup, which is in the same room), and then enjoy BPR with full 5:1 DTS sound (minus music) through your XB1's speaker setup, and get fantastic positional audio on all the crashy smashy racey effects.

This is DJ Hearthotomica, signing out.

How can you play Burnout without Avril Lavigne?

Just in case you didn't know. PlayStation plus subscribers get 10 percent of Spotify.

Which 10%? Or can I choose which 10% I want?

I doubt I’d listen to 10% in my lifetime to be fair so it sounds like a good deal.

It is shared between all ps plus subscribers and there is a lot of them, so you don't get too much.
