My wife drives with no shoes on, she feels she has better control over the pedals that way, she does normally keep her socks on though...

That's worse! Doesn't she find her feet slipping off the pedals?

I guess not, although at this point it is just habit as she's been doing it for about 11 years.

Yes. I have done 10k in it now.

It's low mileage for the grief it's given you! Keep at it.

I think i could sort most of its issues for half a monkey but I little point in this. I'll wait until MoT says it needs doing, as I can live with the heater only working on 3 and 4, no 12v socket to charge things from, not being able to turn the temperature thing all the way left, the alarm draining the battery, warped brake disc on right hand side, slow coolant leak, rust on arches, lost fuse box cover, flat spot between 2k and 3k rpm and the handbrake needing adjusting.

I was going to ask if it was against the law to drive barefoot but then realised how silly that sounds.

I'm sure I read that somewhere.

Did you look at the fuel and air filters? Cheap bits to see if they'll do the trick. 30% of Eurocarparts at the moment too "SAVE30"

I kicked the exhaust a few times, and bounced it off the limiter a few times until it blew the stuffing from the exhaust. But, yeah, I will get them now.

I naturally want to go as fast as a rocket, so he instructs me to push down in the accelerator in the thickness of a pound coin to get me to speed up in increments.

He should have said similar when he told me to brake and I did my first emergency stop, completely uninstructed. Seatbelts work, at least.

I was quite the opposite. My instructor was always telling me to drive quicker, always wanting me to be at near the limit on a 30 or 40 road. Personally, I was in no hurry. :)

There's absolutely no reason to learn to drive except to get where you're going quicker.

When it comes to your test just keep in mind the words of the great Colin McRae: "if in doubt, go flat out".

Or, 'make sufficient progress' in driverspeak. That was one of the hardest things I had to learn, along with not being intimidated by tailgaters.

Noooo... see, I want to go different places. The places I go to already I’ll still go to in the same way.

Sure, but if you didn't need to get there very quickly you could just walk or get a horse or a bicycle or something.

Absolutely, but yes, imagine a toddler playgroup that's a half hour walk away that lasts from 9-11am.

You can set off at 8.30, get there for 9, turn around and be home for 9.30. You get 1 hour before you have to set off again at 10.30, get there for 11, turn around and be home for 11.30.

Of the last three hours, you've now spent two of them walking.

So I think there sometimes is a need to get there quickly, namely to save your sanity and return quality of life.

You need to tell us more than that! Details man. How many go faster stripes? Does it have a tree sir freshener? Are you allowed to legally drive it?

Astra SRi will have lowered sports suspension; tidy handler and plenty of poke. They last well too. :)

Proverbial shit off a shovel, my Clio only had 172bhp and that absolutely flew. I love hot hatches, what a great concept.

Happens to the best of us, just cough to cover it on your next lesson.

Sounds like it went really well. Great stuff.

Fnarrr. I knew someone would make that joke. He says gas because giving instructions ‘accellerator’ is too long a word.

The instructor is a man, Cavey, which isn’t important except for he had gross hairy man feet.

Well, I can’t remember if o said or not, but Mo’s feet were just too disturbing so I never had a second lesson, but a week tomorrow I try again with Seema, who I hope will be wearing shoes.

A mate at work has offered me £21K cash for the Type-R, and this has caught my beady eye locally, plus the chap selling it has indicated he'd let it go for less than this.

Sort of a sideways move in some regards but a bit more cultured than the Type-R.

Dunno really, I've grown to genuinely like the Type-R despite its unapologetically hardcore 'track car' leanings, and it's not a bad car to live with day-to-day. It'll return 40mpg+ on a tank if driven carefully, bombproof Honda reliability and engineering, and whilst I'd never describe it as 'comfortable' it's an entirely acceptable daily driver - as well as being practical in terms of five doors, decent sized boot, very reasonable running costs and so on. (Plus it's got all the modern toys, tech and gadgets that one could desire.)

I definitely need a car with a decent lick of speed as I often get a good clearish run over the mountain thanks to my frequently anti-social working hours and it's nice to 'make progress' at those times, but then again it'd be good to have something a bit more 'normal car' for when I'm just driving at the same speed as all the other traffic and listening to music.

We shall see. The Golf R will be available for a test drive in a couple of days. I like the idea of a very fast estate car, for some reason.
