I know that in the early stages of my relationship with my then girlfriend now wife, she banned me eating a certain crisp flavour as it made ‘it’ taste funny.

I can eat what I want these days.

Surprisingly hard to find a photo of them, but they were Walkers Sensations Honey Roasted Ham. They were a seasonal thing.

Just been out to see Thor, then nipped next door for a three course meal, then back into the cinema to watch Jigsaw!

Good night. :)

New TV get! It's a 4k LG model with a load of apps built in which may actually replace basically everything that I have plugged into my current TV. If the sound is decent, then it looks like I'm going back to one remote.

Picking it up tonight. Looking forward to it!

Oh, and a new Dyson. Meh.

You need £180 hdmi cables to get decent sound.

A TV - especially a modern one that's an inch thick - is never going to be able to produce anything even nearly as good as a set of external speakers can.

True. The wife wants to wall mount eventually though, so I'm hoping to minimise cabling in the long run

If you get a surround sound amp you'll only have two cables between the TV and the cabinet (one from the amp, and power). Assuming you don't have a network cable.

Otherwise you'll need one cable for each source going to the TV.

Just to get it out of my head and into text I currently have:

A cheapo Tesco 40inch LED TV
A Youview Box, Fire TV and Chromecast plugged into a switched HDMI audio extractor. The audio goes via an optical cable to a Maxell soundbase underneath the TV. This is controlled with a Logitech Harmony 600.

Now as the new TV can do Plex, Netflix, Amazon Video and Google Play Movies, I'm not sure I need the Fire TV. The new TV has Freeview HD so I don't need the Youview box. I'll need to keep the Chromecast for BT Sport though. I might not need the logitech remote either, if the TV can controll the soundbase through ARC.

That doesn't make any sense, does it? The soundbase isn't just a speaker. It can do HDMI switching, but it never really worked very well. Hence the Optical cable.

Note: I've never used ARC as my current TV can't do it. I realise now that it requires an HDMI cable.

It comes naturally ;)

Reading through the manual for the Soundbase, the best option seems to be connecting the TV via HDMI and allowing ARC to pass audio. It can also use CEC (which is what I was probably thinking of before) to control the power of the soundbase.

Not planning on it yet. There's going to be an extensive run in period to see if all the smart apps are up to snuff.

Get a 5.1 receiver and speakers.

It'll pay for itself.

The two 4K TVs I’ve bought recently are much thicker at the bottom where the speakers are and they sound much better than the 5 year old LCD panel we replaced. Granted, they’re not amazing, but much better. And, to stop questions, one of them was for the loft conversion finished at the end of last year...

We have a fire stick and fire tv and just use the built in apps. Granted, the house is networked and both TVs have HTML cables plugged in, though.

Coincidentally, just for shits and giggles the other day, I temporarily flicked the sound output of my Sony TV from the surround sound to the in-built speakers. I was amused/shocked at how fucking awful it sounds and quickly switched it back.

New TV get!.

So, this was a fun evening.

The TV is excellent. Shockingly light for a 43 inch TV. (I remember how much my old 32 inch CRT weighed and how it took two grown men to heft it into place)

The picture is very, very nice, even on SD sources. We watched Stranger Things in 4K HDR through the built in Netflix app and blimey O'Reilly, it looks nice. Every Frame A Painting indeed.

The sound is... better than expected. Quite thin at the low end but very nice for dialogue. Going to keep using the soundbase for now and will probably get an LG soundbar for when it goes on the wall.

The built in apps work fine. It's nice to have Google Play movies, Amazon Prime and Netflix all playing nice together for once. The Plex app doesn't like HDR 4k sources though, annoyingly, but they don't work through the Fire TV plex app without transcoding either.

The problem is I forgot about TV recording and timeshifting. So I need to keep my Youview box for now. Apparently the TV becomes a Freeview Play box if you connect an external hard drive, so I'll have to look into that. I can do TV recording though Plex but it's still quite flaky and you can't pause live TV (grumble, moan).

So, the upshot is... for now, I'm keeping the Youview box and Fire TV connected through the switcher, just to ease the transition.

And if you read all that: go get yourself a biscuit. You deserve it.
