I was working away from home a couple of years ago, staying in an 'otel (but I never have hotel breakfasts) and found that my milk had gone off over night, so I had my muesli with water. Wasn't too bad, really, after I'd let it soak for a while. In fact I often have porridge made with water rather than milk, as a small contributory factor in my middle age spread reduction regime.

It's a lovely day and I'm sitting around the house waiting for plumbers and deliveries. I could be smoking wings and brisket and pork but I didn't pick any up based on the weather last night and now I can't go out. Dammit.

I'm thinking I might try cold-smoking some cheese.

But cheese should not be smoked.

Except that German stuff that comes in round slices, that's alright.

Also cheese isn't meat.

Not really. I had some Christmas cheese that was pretty amazing once, but generally I like my cheese to have cheese in it. Cheese with chillis in is fucking nice.

Also no.

Cold-smoking your own meat or fish is a fucking daredevil act. It takes 1-3 hours to smoke, during which time it's hanging around at room temperature. If it's warmer than a fridge outside -- which it definite is -- then hellloooo Salmonella and wait, what's this, you've brought your charming companion E. coli along too? Well, let me invite you into my lower intestine so we can all have a party!

Cathedral City isn't good. Unfortunately my reference is... Er, Cornish Cruncher, maybe? Can't remember. But it doesn't matter because it got bought and rebranded and "hey, new name but it's still the same" except it was shit.

The super-vintage stuff M&S have from Davidstow Creamery is fantastic, just not AS fantastic.

No, wait, it was Devon Tickler. Something Tickler. I forget the specifics.

Either way, neither smoked nor full of other bits, the way cheese should be.

I had forgotten about smoked eel nigiri sushi though, I have to concede that. Along with white stilton with apricot and Wensleydale with cranberries. Everything else is worse than cheese-with-stuff-on-top.

Smoked cheese is lovely. The applewood is ok, a little sweet, but ok for an easy to come by selection. I’d definitely try the daurylea though because Dairylea is awesome.

Get some if the smoked cathedral city spreadable and smoke it more.

Sainsbury's used to sell a smoked basil with chillies in it. I loved, but suspect I was the only one to buy it so they stopped selling it.

The word cheese was missing from their description as well, tbf. I think that basil was the type of cheese, but have never been able to find any reference to it

Bavarian basil. Something like that anyway, it has been a few years since I saw it.

Edit. I think it was this under a different, and ambiguous, label.

Someone I don't know is sitting in my preferred seat in the office. Having to find a less-convivial place has got today off to a bad start for me. I know it's childish and we're all super-agile-hot-deskers etc but, grr, I like having a view.

I can understand hot-desking as a concept if you're for example working on a project with some new people for a few weeks/months, but at least when you come in each day you know where you're sitting.

If hot-desking becomes a similar grab for prime spots in the same way as non-allocated parking spaces then it would be incredibly stressful to me:
1) Getting a spot I feel comfortable in.
2) Fighting anxiety that people are talking about how I always grab the 'good spot' because I come in earlier.
3) Where do I put all the stuff that reminds me of home, like my family photos and artwork Darwin has made.

I miss having postcards and other fun stuff to look at, but I'm too lazy to take in and out all day. My current office feels like a sterile workhouse. About the only decoration I carry with me is a beer mat so my cup doesn't stain the table. Still, when I get an upgrade to Windows 10 I'll be allowed to change the background picture, so I can exhibit my personality against the soullessness of the corporation.

I wish some of the offices here would fucking hotdesk. Save us shuffling the fuckers around every fucking 3 months because some fucker has decided that mixing up the fucking desks makes for a better fucking team mixing environment. Which means moving all the fucking PCs, monitors and the like. Plus all of their fucking shit that goes with it.

Fuckers.

No-one's taking my desk from me though. Said the man who's been at a completely different desk miles from his own for 4 weeks. I miss my chair. And my lamp. I love lamp.

We did hot desking at my old place and it didn’t bother me too much as I was always one of the first in so I had the same desk every day. The same happened with one of my colleagues. As we were in early, we always had the nicest desks.

One of the arsey managers made a passing comment one day that that’s not how hot desking works and we should move desks. Of course, I didn’t because we were following the rules of hot desking. First come, first served.

It didn’t help that we were about 5 desks short for the team so if no one was on holiday or off sick, the late comers had to go somewhere else in the building. Possibly another building.

I’m sure someone came in one morning, saw there were no desks and just turned straight around and went home.

They have tried this at my place for years, what usual happens is that people get a preferred desk and they just take it over with personal stuff.

People like the fact they can work at home but still want a defined desk.

Recently a department here has tried again and made more effort so it might work this time.

Firstly they addressed all the push back from the staff, then lockers were added for people to put personal stuff into.

Finally I put in a Condeco hot desk system, these are small devices about the size and shape of an Echo Dot. They light up Red or Green to show if the desk is free or not and are fitted to screening around the desks. When you walk into the open plan area you can see if what is free.

People can book a desk via a smartphone, or on a touch screen in the department or even just walk up to a green one and touch it to book the desk.

The other issue with hotdesks was the endless models of laptop and docking stations that you would get from in our case HP, you would find 2 years in none of the newer models worked with the older docking stations, we have a single USB3 solution for the screen and other devices now.

I don't mind hot desking.

As long as it has a monitor, so I can read my docs better, not really fussed.
