I wouldn't be too surprised that face unlock failed on the very first public demo. Murphy's law insists on it.

I don't think it did, actually. If you look closely the screen says "enter passcode to enable FaceID." That's the default state of a freshly booted iPhone; you need to enter the passcode at least once to activate the biometrics [1]. So FaceID didn't fail, it wasn't enabled on that phone. He switches to a backup phone immediately afterwards, he doesn't continue the demo on that one.

[1] you're actually decrypting the storage area where the biomoetric data is stored.

Having switched from front to back :hat: I think I also prefer a rear scanner. I'm constantly hitting this one by accident when I put it into my pocket and it wibbles to tell me it's not figured out my fingerprint so I think I've got a new notification ?:|

I hope the face thing won't be used to make purchases. Often there's times when I've clicked on something by mistake and it's like "Confirm payment of £99.99 to Ashley Madison using your finger print". It's easy enough to not press a button and press cancel but if I'm looking at my screen to read the text I don't want to mistakenly activate the payment.

Oh course this is a daft example and I'm sure they've thought of this but I do wonder whether some unscrupulous apps might dispense with some checks and balances.

My phone doesn't lock when it's connected to the car bluetooth.

The Facial recognition will replace the finger print for Apple Pay, thinking that will be possibly fiddly when trying to have the phone close enough to the card reader and have it see your face?!

Quite like the idea of the Facial recognition to unlock as the minute you get any water on your fingers the finger print unlock stops working

Don't like the fact Apple have removed the 128GB storage (is that just on the X?) its the same with the new Ipad Pros as well 64 or 256\512

Not hard for me to get an X financially as I manage the phones at work and have a 6 figure credit account with VF as we have just renewed the company contract for 3 years :)

Phones have peaked. I'll be going SIM only when my current contract is up and only get another phone when my current one breaks.

I really do think Apple have lost the plot.
I want a phone that has a headphone socket that doesn't double as its port & requires yet more stupid, bespoke leads and prevents it from being charged at the same time, and a home button FFS so I can have half a chance of operating it when it's in the car cradle. I could not give a shit about gimmicks like face recognition, wireless charging and all that shite, just give me a phone I can use goddammit (that preferably doesn't cost a grand, or decides to delete GBs of my music at random).

Guess I'll be one of those guys perpetually looking for good condition 64GB 6S handsets on the secondhand market, then. >:(

Interesting article here comparing the face recognition software to the Kinect software on the Xbox. Some good points made.

Incidentally, I had a friend round the other week and because he's signed into my Xbox One, my Kinect kept recognising him and logging him in. This wouldn't be a problem if his wife wasn't at home watching Netflix on his Xbox One so it kept signing him out of that one, and into mine. It's the future!

I'm not interested in getting an X at all, and prefer fingerprint recognition for cases where I don't want to look at my phone, but...

A grand isn't much more than other top end phones.

The facial recognition technology is apparently far better than stuff in the past, so it will likely work a lot better than you expect.

I'm on board with wireless headphones and wireless charging just always seems cool and magical, so I'm less bothered about those changes. Just mostly seems "It's like the last one, but slightly better", which isn't really enough to sell me on wanting one, let alone paying for one at those prices.

I've never had any issues with the tech side Facial Recognition when I've used it (only on an Android phone, but still) - it's the "I look like a dick" side.

Facial recognition is going to be waay more secure for me than for you.

Being a 10, my clearly defined features will have much better data points than the mean miasma of smoothed averages you 5s have.

Here's the Apple Upgrade Programme monthly pricing. This is more realistic pricing; few people are paying upfront for unlocked phones.

NB -- this is just the phone; no cell service in that.
NB2 -- these prices include AppleCare, the extended warranty / cheap repairs service. Apple isn't quoting the price without that yet.

Don't lighting conditions fuck with it's recognition abilities in existing Android handsets? I've never bothered with it but without the Kinect-sensing Apple have added I wouldn't have expected it to work when it's dark.

I remember when I got a Samsung d500 on contract, the phone cost was £1000. Contract itself was sensibly priced though.

I don't know about Android models but my Lumia works in pitch black so the technology there is fine. I imagine the Apple tech will do exactly the same.

Also: used facial recognition on the nexus 4.worked well enough, didn't have to do anything out of the ordinary. Indeed it was annoying in that it would often unlock when I didn't mean it to. (see concerns about payment)

Much prefer the fingerprint sensor on the 5x. Facial recognition is a step backwards.

I get work phones for users locked to VF from a tech fund we have with them as part of the contract.

However if I get a user who has lost or broken their phone then I buy the same model unlocked from a reseller and charge their cost centres

There has not been a stable channel for unlocked 7 models since they were released.

I just ordered £80,000 worth of the new Ipad Pro's for a sales force refresh and have been told I might get an idea of delivery times in 3 weeks

Same statement from 3 resellers.

At the last refresh we sent them all back as we leased them. The outgoing ones this time are purchased
so not sure what we will do

Thinking we might see if VF will take them, they take the old 5S and give us £50 each and put that into our tech fund.

Also got people circling from the business :)

Ok will do :)

Not sure when the new ones will arrive, then the update takes ages as 80% are field based and take time to catch and upgrade.

Only reason I ordered now was the finance said they had money and wanted the cost in 2017 budget

Nothing in that keynote particularly interested me enough to move away from my 6. No TouchID is a dealbreaker for me, so the X is out. My 6 is starting to get quite sluggish and is obviously struggling with some newer apps, but not even wireless charging is of enough interest to really make me move to the 8.

I had to set up a new work phone last week

Normally I never back anything up as work email is on Exchange and my pictures all go to OneDrive. This is all I have to worry about so I just do a new phone build then install my apps again

This time I built the new phone from an ICloud backup, I'd bought 50Gb of storage so that we have backups of my wife's personal phone so my phone backups where on there as well.

The backup all went well but I found that after a day 90% the restored apps where on the phone but had "waiting" status.

So in the end I just went to the app store and installed them all from there.

Also with my text messages it only restored messages that had been sent to me, not ones I had sent.

Is this normal for a restore?
