I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but Mission Impossible 5is really unexpectedly good. Brilliantly kinetic feel to it, and far, far better than its pofaced Bond contemporary.

I really like Nolan but is this just war porn or is there more to it than that?

As a piece of film making it's important. It's about as far from war porn as it can be. It's also almost completely apolitical as well, as there are no references to sides and apart from a couple of brief shots of planes you don't even see any Germans. What it is is a cleverly constructed telling of a desperate rescue mission, with little dialogue, practically no gore, some very scared soldiers, some very brave men and some not unexpected shitty behaviour from said scared soldiers.

It is, however, quite relentless. Go and see it on the biggest screen with the best audio you know. It's 1h 45m you won't regret.

Dunkirk was, as expected, a tour-de-force. Visually it was great (my only minor complaint about it being that at no point do you really get any sense of the scale of the Dunkirk evacuation - there's a few moments where they discuss the sheer number of soldiers stuck on the beach, but the visuals don't really match up with this) but aurally it was something else - apart from a very few brief moments where there's very little sound, it just never lets up.

The IMAX sound system in the cinema we were in was clearly unable to cope with the soundtrack, which if anything is a criticism of IMAX rather than the film - but then I'd imagine almost no sound system would be able to deal with that sort of sustained noise.

Not an awful lot of acting required in it, and there's surprisingly little dialogue (Nolan is said to have been influenced by silent movies, and that definitely shows) - the acting that is there is good though, especially from Mark Rylance and the crew of his little pleasure boat, and also surprisingly from Harry Styles (of One Direction fame).

Highly recommended - and it's also surprisingly short (106 minutes) which is probably good, I'm not sure spinning it out to longer would have done much for it.

There was an ad for Call of Duty WWII before the film started, which I felt was a bit tasteless given that the game seems to be very "gameified" and "hoo-ah" type stuff, just felt like it was glamorising war a bit.

I've heard that Nolan's unwillingness to use CGI kind of gets in the way - there's no way he could have got the hundreds of different ships required to actually portray the scale of the evacuation correctly.

I didn't really notice the lack of scale as the focus was on the scenarios and the characters rather than a grand portrayal of the defeat. The hulls of the various ships filled with men were appropriately claustrophobic and evocative of the horror and unpleasantness of situation.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Being rammed in like sardines in the hull of a sinking ship is a horrific nightmare and really well done in the film

When I saw that ad, I was reminded that it had been a long time since I remember watching a modern British WW2 film, and how sometimes the 'America, fuck yeah' stuff can spoil even the best US war film. I still think the framing device in 'Saving Private Ryan' is unnecessarily and needlessly sentimental, for instance.

It totally gets in the way of the PEW PEW.

This is my one concern as the several books I've read really speak of the spectacle. However throughout much of the evacuation the cruisers and destroyers kept to the middle channel relying on the little ships taxi service, and only a few destroyers went close in for AA and ground support. So I'll try to keep that in mind.

It's bound to be better than the surprisingly bad Attenborough 60's Dunkirk movie, anyway.

Off to see it tonight with Lord Rixondale anyway. Expect review, yadda yadda.

I watched 'NOBODY SPEAK' on Netflix last night.

Journalists are trained to look for stories behind the stories. The reporters investigating the Hulk Hogan sex tape and the sale of the Las Vegas Journal-Review, however, found something unprecedented: billionaires covertly using their fortunes to silence the media. Nobody Speak explores what Peter Thiel’s financial support of the lawsuit against Gawker and Sheldon Adelson’s shadowy purchase of Nevada’s largest newspaper mean for future of journalism, the First Amendment, and the power of the ultra wealthy.

This has been on Netflix for a little while but I've not watched it as I've been like, 'Meh, Hulk Hogan, who cares', but ultimately the film really isn't about Hulk Hogan at all and goes to some very interesting places I was totally unaware of.

Very well made, and extremely compelling.

Films I have seen fairly recently with brief opinions so you know to have the opposite ones:

Baby Driver - Astonishing editing. Overplays its hand in the final act and also gets a bit too nasty, much like many other Edgar Wright movies. Awful soundtrack.
The Beguiled - Looks gorgeous, very well played and engaging.
Cars 3 - fine
Circle - Not bad, a bit like an extended episode of Black Mirror
Churchil - Thought provoking insight into the pressures he faced in world war 2 leading up to d day.
It Comes at Night - A pretty good study of man's inhumanity to man kind of horror thriller.
King Arthur Legend of the Sword - Thoroughly entertaining bunkum. I really really enjoyed it.
My Cousin Rachel - Boring.
Norman : The rise and fall of a new york fixer - Fascinating and unusual. A great performance by Richard Gere. You never really know where it's going and it's often a bit uncomfortable in the process. Surprisingly engaging.
Spider Man Homecoming - Thoroughly excellent, proving yet again Marvel really know what they are doing.
WFTPOTA - Good but not as good as Dawn
Wonder Woman - Over 2 hours of being bored and uncomfortable. I had such high hopes as well. Doesn't help that I can't seem to warm to Gal Gadot.

I watched Dunkirk.

It was great and without a shadow of any doubt the experience was heightened immensely by viewing it in a cinema with great surround sound. The sound of the planes was incredibly frightening as they zoomed overhead about to the smash the soldiers.

So it's a bit strange that this unrelenting horror, erm, relents after the very strong opening. Bombs drop, people die, bodies ... stay fully intact with all their limbs? It just took me out of the movie for a moment. There's, like, no blood in the entire film.

And there didn't seem to be many bombing runs after the opener. There were apparently 100,000 people who died according to the film but we only see one plane at a time attacking the beach. It was harrowing but then it wasn't. It was harrowing in other areas though and there's a few good scenes that had me at the edge of my seat.

The one thing I didn't like was Harry Styles. I'm sure he's a good looking lad but I didn't want to be reminded of a super pop star in his debut role and analysing his acting during the intense scenes. Any nameless joe would have been better in my eyes. I think I actually need to see it again so I can just ignore that it's Harry Styles because I've already seen it.

NeeeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEOOOOOW out of 10.

I wouldn't necessarily have known which one Harry Styles was without checking, and he certainly didn't get any special focus for being famous.

Anyway, I thought the film was superb and IMAX was a great way to see it. The sound made a huge difference, and in the quiet parts you could hear a pin drop, the audience was that focused on what was happening.

I watched 'AN EYE FOR AN EYE' on Amazon Prime last night, I need to check the Prime list of films more often as there is actually some decent stuff in there.

This is a documentary about the 'Arab Slayer' Mark Stroman, who in the wake of the 9/11 attacks decided he should kill Arabs in the USA as an act of war. He didn't do very well, the three men he shot were from Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. Two of them died, one survived, despite being shot in the face and losing an eye.

He was convicted of murder and sent to jail, but the prosecution had managed to get the charge elevated to capital murder, which can carry the death sentence, (through some dubious contortions which are covered in the film, including an interview with a juror who is still clearly traumatised about her part in sentencing a man to death), and Mark Stroman was sentenced to death.

What happens next is best described as follows:

http://www.filmjournal.com/reviews/film-review-eye-eye

865/1000

Quote:
Israeli filmmaker Ilan Ziv makes the tough choice to chronicle this killer’s time on death row, as he awaits execution.

An Eye for an Eye, tough to take as it is—with nigh unbearable-to-listen-to audiotape of the murder being committed—turns out to be one of the most searingly honest and moving depictions of redemption and the power of forgiveness ever made. Although from the most troubled of backgrounds, bearing a swastika tattoo and deeply rooted in the kind of bigotry and violent ignorance—taken to its furthest extreme—which seem to frighteningly inform many of the supporters of this year’s GOP candidate, Stroman admitted to being deeply remorseful over his crimes. And damn if, even riddled with scepticism in most such cases, you don’t believe him.

You, or should I say I, and Ziv, as it turns out, aren’t the only ones. Unbelievably, one of Stroman’s biggest supporters to stay his execution was one of his victims: Rais Bhuiyan, a Bangladeshi man partially blinded in the attack, publicly forgave him and went even further by spearheading a legal campaign to commute his sentence. His interviews are a near-miraculous revelation of unfathomable human goodness, and although Ziv cannot resist the urge to try to attempt a suspenseful “Will he or won’t he fry?” time-ticking denouement for his film, this cheesiness is effectively countered by the pure, heartfelt emotion of Bhuiyan’s words, as well as survivors of both the dead victims and, as it turned out, Stroman.

I could have done with a lot less of Stroman’s frankly lousy doggerel poetry—“I was white trash/just another junkie/that’s why they assigned me a two-bit flunky/and I knew at first glance that I did not stand a chance”—but the man himself, as much as one hates to admit it, impresses. Bathed in a kind of uncanny personal key light, as many born-again proselytizers seem to be, as much as an inked-out hot mess as he is, there is also a transcendent handsomeness and oozing sincerity about him as he plainly states his case and new being. Almost ridiculously, watching him sorrowfully speaking to loved ones or pleading for his life, with his shaved head and burning eyes I was somehow reminded of Falconetti as Dreyer’s Joan of Arc.

By his own admission Stephen King was routinely out of his fucking tree on drugs and alcohol when he wrote a lot of his books.

IIRC he said of Pet Sematary he was amazed it got published because it so was brutally nasty and out there.

The new movie is written by Cary Fukanaga, director of season one of true detective, he was supposed to direct it to, but for some reason they owe parted ways.

Aye, the 2ewan scenes were a bit jarring and immersion damaging but the film wasn't that intense anyway so I didn't mind. One bit was were his character sees a motorcycle for the first time and Ewan turns to camera and says I don't know what that was, but I want one *patented MacGregor smile with tooth glint*. Too cheesy for me that bit but otherwise good fun.

I am still grumpy about The Island being made, because they ripped large chunks of it from 'Spares', which is an excellent book, and made it into a far less good film than they would have done had they just filmed a movie of 'Spares'.

And they reused a load of special effects shots from The Island in the first Transformers movie

Hmm, no, that's not the film I was thinking of. It was a secret island and some guy gave him a map to the place while he was travelling.

Watched 'The Illusionist' yesterday. Wasn't bad, but felt like a more predictable 'Prestige'. Was a bit too long too, but I find that with most films these days.

I've watched some filums:

It Stains The Sand Red, was first. A dark comedy about a woman chased across a desert pursued by a solitary zombie. It's quite fun but isn't going to set the world on fire. The last 15 minutes are piss pants poor but if you turn it off then you'll think it was pretty good.

Then The Legend of Tarzan. For once I would like to watch a film that Samuel L Jackson is not shoehorned into. He's entirely disposable and I'm not sure what his role is outside of getting Tarzan to go to the jungle in the first 5 minutes. Anyway, as you can probably expect from watching a trailer it's just a fucking disposable CGI-fest with little redeeming quality. Tarzan doesn't even use his Tarzan powers until the last 10 minutes. Tch. And Jane is a fucking irritating character who I thought was played by the slaggy woman out of My Name is Earl, but isn't. You'll swear it's her though and wonder why she's not shagging everything and effing and blinding. It was quite distracting.

So there you go, one alright film and one trash.

Baby Driver.

Great sound track. Usual over the top car chases.

I watched Don't Breathe last night and fucking hell, it's brutal and tense as shit. Three young burglars break into the house of a blind army vet for the cash he's hoarding thinking it'll be an easy score and within minutes it goes totally fucking tits up. It just doesn't let up from start to finish and is endlessly inventive in the ways it drops the terrified robbers into fucked up situations just when you think they're finally free and clear. Very good stuff.

Ooohhh splendid call, I liked the sound of it from your description so watched it as tonight's screentime entertainment.

Everything you said, basically.

It's very much a home invasion genre piece in a lot of ways but done with enough wit and invention, and a wicked sense of truly relentless peril, that you'll forgive it the elements of cliche.

835/1000

Just one thing though:

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
When Alex and Rocky were chased upstairs and into the bedroom by the dog (with the blind guy following) they quickly barricaded the door with the wardrobe, and then did an appraisal of all the windows in the room, establishing that all of them had fixed bars on the outside so weren't a possible escape route. Rocky then started climbing through the air vent in the room as the door was battered down by the blind dude and the dog ran in. In the scuffle that followed Alex fell against and then out of a window and onto the kitchen roof below.

How did he fall straight through the window if all of them were barred?
