From the motorbike thread as it doesn't really belong in there - viewtopic.php?p=954723#p954723

Quote:
Yeah, whoever ran the engine in on your car was a fucking bellend and ragged it way past safe limits during the run-in period.

So instead of your piston rings making a proper seal in the cylinders, there's little bits that oil can seep through into the combustion chamber. I suppose if anything it should increase power slightly (more energy in the combustion?) but it's not good for the engine.

Similar fault on the early 140bhp 7th gen Celicas, although in that instance it was a manufacturing fault that made the piston rings weaken over time and become misshapen, allowing the oil to leak through. Worst case I ever heard of on that car was burning a litre of oil for every 200 miles.

I've done a fair bit of reading on this and opinion is divided on why the engine in the B8 S4 uses oil, (note the B8.5 (facelift) S4 doesn't, so Audi changed something but didn't tell anyone what it was), one school of thought is that Audi's 'gentle run-in' policy is actually the problem, and ones that were given a bit more beans from new don't exhibit the problem. (The rings harden better and quicker, or something?)

There is consensus however that once your S4's 'loss rate' has been established it won't get any worse or better, that's just how much oil your car is going to use, and certainly mine has been absolutely steady at 1400-1500 miles per litre top-up required.

Don't get me wrong, I'd much rather I didn't have to keep putting a litre of oil in it that regularly, even using the Fuch's oil off Amazon it's not exactly super-cheap (as you have to use oil that meets the VW/Audi spec, and aren't supposed to just chuck any 5W/30 oil in there), but it's not that much of a faff and it's not detracting from my overall enjoyment of the car (unlike the Merc and its various problems, which I was somewhat fucked off with after the same duration of ownership).

I went into S4 ownership with my eyes open, it was never going to be cheap car to own overall, if I'd wanted that I'd just buy a ten year old Ford Focus, so the oil 'situation' doesn't particularly bother me.

EDIT - Plus, I'll only have it for another 12 months or so anyway, like all cars in my life, it's just passing through really :D

When we drove to the Ring we bought each other "presents". Team Boomer had eyelashes over the headlights and a sticker on the back saying "Rude girls".

We had some disappointed looks from people overtaking us on the motorway, that's for sure.

This popped up next to some motor racing clip I was watching on YouTube the other day. 1970s cars crashing at the Nurburgring:

8) Can't believe people moan about modern cars really. Half of these seemed to end up tumbling down the road just because they turned too sharp.

Everyone seemed to come out ok to me.

Serious lack of #Hellaflush caused 90% of those crashes. Silvercross suspension! :D

Yeah, I doubt it felt very nice at all, that's the gnarliest bit of the whole thing though, it's mostly just crashes and dazed and bemused looking seventies people staggering about in their flares.

Car not remapped this week due to failing the health check. Boo! Exhaust blowing in three places (!) and the turbo is loosing some boost (has good initial boost but trails off).

Getting the exhaust done first then taking back to ADS to diagnose the turbo problem, hopefully something straightforward like split hose.

Probably feel like a new car once the exhaust and turbo are sorted, never mind the remap.

EXCITING ROVER UPDATE!

Four hundred and eleven fucking quid to insure! Four hundred and eleven! That's two tickets to GnR, and two nights in the Premier in in Shoreditch. To drive a 17 year old Rover 25 with 65,000 on the clock. Four hundred and eleven!

So, all in all, it costs me £151 a month to get to work (mot cost, insurance, fuel, tax), and a season ticket on train would be £100. That extra £2.55 a day is mire than worth the two hours extra a day taking the train.

20 minute walk to station, change at Leeds, arrive then 10 minute walk from station to work.

Looking at it, i would need to leave house at 0640, to arrive at work at 0830, then leaving at 1700, id get back at1830.

So, leave an hour earlier, and get back half hour later, so 90 mins.

Driving is 50 minutes in, and an hour back.

I don't think i can do it much cheaper at the moment, I'd have to get a car doing 35+mpg and lower tax. I think insurance is about as low as it will go ( i could save £60 by having £250 excess)

Yes, it was 56k when i got it, full book of stamps, no rattles etc, so $800 cash is a helluva deal.

I was going to suggest a fold-up bike to cut the journey down, but the change at Leeds sounds like a killer. Hard to argue with the Rover there.

I take a fold up bike for either end of the train, saving loads of walking time. But it doesn't change the train's fundamental problem of being on a relatively irregular timetable. Finish work 5 minutes late? Get home 45 minutes later than had you finished on time.

Add Mrs A (which I'm sure you have), and add a friend (you can use me if you like). My insurance went down when I added Craster as a named driver (not that he can drive).

Add Mrs A (which I'm sure you have), and add a friend (you can use me if you like). My insurance went down when I added Craster as a named driver (not that he can drive).

That's not fair. He can drive!

It's just that he's not allowed to drive.

Yes, it was 56k when i got it, full book of stamps, no rattles etc, so $800 cash is a helluva deal.

Yeah, but I bet Mali's Rover had way more receipts in there for things that had been fixed.

Yeah, it's a pain. The station is on the trans penni e line, but not a stop for that train, so infrequent. I could cycle to work on my cycle to work bike but there's no showers here, and Bradford traffic is lethal
