Making progress with the current project, which will be modern warfare with The Russkis invading Germany.

Russian soldiers: they're 20mm tall and based on 1p coins (to give you an idea of the scale), so if the painting looks rough up close it's because they're bloody tiny.

The US infantry just started:

Some vehicles on the go - the Abrams and BTR-80 are prepaints which need repainting.

I've also got a few more to build (plus an AH64, an A-10 and a Mig-23):

A couple of model railway buildings built and undercoated - there are another 3 now done since these photos with 2 more to do:

And I scratch built a garage - can't really see due to my shit photography but it's cladded with small wooden planks, made from coffee stirrers. Took a sodding age to cut those up.

The plan will be to have 4 landscape tiles, perhaps 18 or 24 inches to a side. I have loads of trees to go in as well.

I will be bringing this to Cott8ge :) There are some relatively fast play rules I've dug out which with a bit of modification will make for a fun game.

How would the A-10 and Mig work on a tabletop war game? I can see how the choppers can hang about but the planes wouldn't like that so much.

Looking good btw!

They'd more be a one turn deal, so the model would be there simply to indicate an airstrike that turn, I think. Fuck's sake man, any excuse for a bloody warthog model.

I'm making some flying bases for the vehicles - CD base, with a large washer and nut, and then an extendable aerial type thing with a magnet on the top glued into the nut. The aircraft will then have magnets or steel washers on their undersides to connect up. The base will of course get all tittivated up.

The paint job? A lot better than I could do but it's not particularly great compared to any of the stuff you see placing in miniature painting competitions

I'm more impressed with the opening doors. My Heroquest set has only got cardboard doors.

Work continues slowly on this - the buildings have been built, more stuff has been bought (lots of greenery, flowers, plants, trees etc), the flight stands have been made. I'm now in the process of painting some diecast cars as part of the scenery - I'll post pics soonish depending on how much progress I make. Alongside that, I'm writing some reasonably simplistic rules to use at Cottage - working title is "Battlefield: Beex Company 2". It's based loosely on a game of similar name :)

You should have snapped that up - I'm currently doing a Dwarf team in the colours of the Armed Forces of the Soviet Union. I'm terrible at the game, so you'd easily win.

The core rules for the game will be free, and you’ll have several options on how you get your

Hmmm... might be the time to delve into the 40k game then. Harrison is intrigued by the painted miniatures in my den, be a good excuse to paint and build up a few squads with him.

I've had a look through the most recent rules, and I wasn't that impressed. I've still got Rogue Trader and the 40K Compendium book if I need them, though.

Ah, Rogue Trader, when the Imperium were Nazis, the Space Marines were drugged up crazies, Chaos was interesting and had a point, rather than being panto villains, and the excessive grimdark was satire, rather than being 100% serious.

My 6yr old son has become obsessed with the box of White Dwarf magazines that Dimrill sent me ages back, and I've promised him we'll set up a game board and buy the new Dark Imperium box set when we move house. I thought it might be a good idea to make up a simpler game first though to see if he gets how it all works, and it's been great.

Armed with cheap plastic army men, (£2.99 for 100 - Fuck you Citadel) two 30cm strips of paper and a single D6 I came up with these simple rules and we've played a fair bit over the weekend.

All Army men have 2 wounds.
Squads of 5 (that once down to 2 need to join with nearest squad). We usually have 3 squads each to keep things quick.
Army men move 15cm (the paper strip folded in half) and shoot a distance of 30cm.
Wounded Army men move 7.5cm (strip folded over again)
A roll of 6 is a KILL, 3,4,5 is a wound and 1 or 2 is a miss. If the dice falls off the table it's a miss too!

Now that he totally gets these rules I'm going to add Grenade rules with an blast radius token, terrain* height advantages of +1 to rolls and maybe medic / leader rules too.
Even with these plastic army men we could have rules for Heavy Machine Gunners and Bazookas too, but didn't want to take the fun out of it with too many rules at first.

Tempted to paint the faces and guns of these soldiers now too and stick them on proper bases...

*Box of fire lighters and sanitary pad box :DD (we'd just got back from shopping), plastic cups etc

Ace :)

The older of my two gets wargames quite easily - he loves Imperial Assault and XWing.
The younger one prefers Ticket To Ride style simplicity of rules. Hopefully the Battlefield: BEEX Company rules are sufficiently simple for him to enjoy some model based PEW PEW.

Taken the plunge and gone halves with my lad on the new 8th Edition WH40k set - Dark Imperium.

Good value from Goblin Games £76 delivered, with two (roughly) 1000pt armies, rule books, dice and markers.

Only ever played Spacehulk previously and collected / painted miniatures on and off since a teenager, so here we go...

Gods, loads - commissions are well expensive. Good thing about Shadespire is that they come on pre-coloured plastic and are pushfit, so even a cack-handed spacker like me can join in the fun. I've assembled the minis you get in the box and the two expansions released so far and they look badass, I'll get a picture.

Also we put this up for pre-order at the weekend. I'm told it's a big deal.

No, it doesn't have progression or a campaign system, and games are a LOT quicker. It's about collecting and assembling a deck of power cards (more cards come with the expansions) which you use along with the minis - each faction has strengths and weaknesses that play off against each other. Games take about 30 minutes, it's designed for fast leagues and tournaments, pickup games at the local gaming cafe, that sort of thing.

Besides, WHFB got blown up, remember? This made a lot of people very cross.

Hi Da5e!

Death Guard and Primaris teams part painted and 1st game played with 14 points to keep it simple*. My boy didn't loose interest despite me trying (slowly) to get my head around each phase and what we needed to roll, started to sink in then the charge phase confused me some more (i'll watch some more YouTube vids).

Any how now we're committed I was wondering if we should go down the Codex book route or would the data cards be enough to get details for other units for each team? Or would we need both?

Ta

*It wasn't simple

Model updates!

Despite the move, I managed to get a wriggle on with some stuff before shipping out in December, and have been painting away since...

I have some terrain boards that have been landscaped and glooped (6 square boards about 18 inches to a side, IIRC), and just need painting and tittivating. I’ll bang up some photos of those at some point.

The miniatures all need properly basing still, and I’ll stick in a self-defence disclaimer that the sunlight was a bit bright so it doesn’t really show them off to their best advantage… I’ll try to work out a better way of photographing them… (and the US ones in particular could do with being a little closer...)

The US forces:

The Russkis:

Some (completely inappropriately painted) airsupport:
Image

The panel “lining” doesn’t look quite so stark in real life, honest. There is an A-10, Flogger, Apache and Hind waiting to be done…

Some buildings I’ve put together – these are mostly model railroad kits I think. They all need the grounds doing, obviously! I was planning on doing these at the same time as the terrain boards.

An overview of the main house (which reminds me of the one in COD MW...):

Some other angles of the grounds:

Some other buildings:
The pathway needs drybrushing to finish off on this one, as well as the grounds being painted/vegetated:

Smaller house:

There’s another one that’s mostly built and primed I need to get on with as well, but no photos of that at the moment. I’ve also got a couple more unbuilt but these four will take up enough space on the board for now.

Some vehicles:

Some random scatter terrain that needs basing:

That’s it so far – some tanks to follow at some point…

They're off a bit - they're German HO scale kits, so around 1:87 scale. The soldiers are 1:72- close enough for government work, but it's noticeable if the leeetle men are stood next to the doors of the houses...

Good work! Have you bought any more models while you've been there?

I've been building some scenery ready for when I can play WH40k again. House is upside down while the loft is getting sorted.

Good work!

Still need to finish our Death Guard & Dark Angels armies at ours. Harrison picked up a Start Collecting Tau boxed set last weekend so we're busy building those too.

Despite all this we have to do I'm still looking at the new Kill Team and Adeptus Titanicus sets...

I have somehow managed to end up in a 5th Ed D&D game at work - I'm enjoying it so far, but our group is too big, I think ( 7 + the DM ) and so getting a regular timeslot has been a nightmare, and the sessions end up too short, I reckon. We're all pretty much newbies, so it's taking its time to get into the swing of things. A few sessions in and I already want to go back and start again, with a character I made when I understood the rules.

I'm sure there are some tabletop RPGers around here!

The Sims BEEX edition is looking a bit sparse.

7 plus the DM is a lot. I think up to 4 works best.

It works quite well as a 'sitting around a table with a beer' activity, but i think with that many people you'd really need experienced players and a DM, which we do not have :)

Keep meaning to post the scenery and WH40k armies we've been putting together. I'll grab some pics this weekend.

As for your D&D group problem, simply change the time that you play and don't tell the 3 people you don't like as much.

Well, actually, the rest of them do keep saying "We've had to cancel, no one can make it that day". I think they might be doing that to me :'(

I've left Games Workshop now.

BUT! Here are some minis by Spectre based on the graphic novel series I work on. 28mm scale, BCM loadouts. There'll be ISIS ones soon!

Just started learning to play this over the last few weeks with a friend and we're really enjoying it. Caught the bug I think as we've decided we need bigger armies and more rule books and stuff.
