What Remains of Edith Finch: a woman returns to her childhood home to explore the circumstances of the individual deaths of her family members. So far so Gone Home, and indeed in the opening minutes it does seem like this is going to be a walking simulator by the numbers. The exploration of the house is just a framing device though and when you get into each family member's room it kicks off a playable vignette that tells their story. These vignettes vary wildly in length, mechanics, mood and even graphical style but they're all engaging and excellent. You never know what each story will entail and the compellingly fanciful nature of them pulls you through the game in a way no other 'walking simulator' has ever managed. There was even a lovely little nod to the studio's previous game, An Unfinished Swan, that made me smile when I came across it. The way interaction is handled throughout makes it another example of something that just could not be done in any other medium which is always nice to see. The absolutely only criticism I think could be levelled at it is that £15 for a few hours is maybe a bit steep. Frankly I couldn't give a shit and thought it was worth every penny because but undoubtedly others will moan about that. Anyway, it's fucking awesome: go play it.
