It's a bit odd how you can be 62% Labour, 61% Lib Dems and also 57% Conservative. If all the major parties are that close, you may as well just pick one based on how much you like the colour of their logo.

You've uncovered the reason I vote Lib Dem.

The BNP still exist don't they but I didn't think that Nick Griffin is their leader anymore?

Not that I actively keep up with them you understand, I cannot stress that enough.

For me Labour and Green ended up being higher (69%) than the SNP (67%). Not surprised about Green, but a little with Labour. Tories are, unsurprisingly, right down at 35%

Nothing for St Piran? There goes the Cornish vote.

One or two more bank holidays would be good, especially if it helped to spread the breaks more evenly over the year.

St David and At Patrick are in March, St George in April. Between the beginning of March, and end of May there will be 7 bank holidays!

I think this could be a master stroke, every year the more right leaning people on my Facebook timeline are always pleading for St George's day to be a bank holiday!

I note Tim Farron's getting a lot of stick for not saying if he thinks gay sex is a sin or not. It doesn't matter what he thinks about it: what matters if he wants to stop others doing it. That's kind of what liberalism's about, but doesn't make as good headlines.

I'm not a fan of golf or the so-called golfing community, but what they do on the grass with sticks is their business so long as it doesn't hurt me or other people.

Indeed, and his voting record on the subject is pretty close to ideal.

No, they do this every so often. It gets close, then the 367th Republic remembers the wars and goes the other way.

Given how my political predictions have gone over the past two years, I'm not going to comment. Perhaps if I put some money on Mme. Le Pen that might swing it?

Much depends on how inoffensive M. Macaron is to moderates on either side, but French politics is always very fractious. Really should read more French history and contemporary politics on it at some point.

I disagree. Women's equality is an important issue and I think the publicity is important. Going after Davies seems a very sensible way of both highlighting your key issue and taking a mysogenistic twat out of the governing body.

Yeah, but at the cost of local party candidates standing aside. Tell you what, if I cannot vote Greens, I'll vote WEP for you, here, and you vote howsoever you think I would there.

I thought about this over luncheon. I think that despite my concerns, WEP is probably the best option to vote for. Mainly driven by Cras and his reasonings. But they are not where I want the to be on Brexit.

Voting for a minor or young (or minor and young) party helps push them above the threshold so they get their deposit back for use in the next campaign. It also makes the more established parties aware of an issue and demographic they are failing to appeal to and, one hopes, make some shift to attract these voters. The classic example is the sudden interest in environmental issues among the major parties after the Greens came out of nowhere in the 1989 Euros. Here endeth the lesson.

Aw, thanks.

I seem to be channeling my 17 year old A-level politics self there . But I've never felt that voting for a minor one is a complete waste of time. Besides, it's always highly amusing when one of the majors falls behind the Monster Raving Loonies.

I don't see what's surprising about Corbyn being popular. He's not turned out to be a particularly effective leader of the party but he's a decent, principled man and I can very much understand his appeal as a politician. (His voting record on women's issues in parliament, for example, is far better than May's.)

If you can look beyond much of the media's hatred for him, and actually see the man himself and the policies of his party - there's a lot to like.

I'd vote Labour in the GE if, y'know, I could vote in it.

Quote:
How to answer the lazy "Corbyn is unelectable" propaganda trope

Political propaganda works by programming intellectually lazy people with very simple tropes that they can rote learn and regurgitate instead of doing the hard work of actually researching and thinking about the issues for themselves.

Two of the most ubiquitous of these glib political propaganda tropes are the "Jeremy Corbyn is unelectable" one and the "Theresa May is a strong leader".

I've already written an article ripping the ludicrously counterfactual right-wing "Theresa May is a strong leader" trope to shreds (see here) and this article exists to confront the "Jeremy Corbyn is unelectable" one.

'Corbyn can't win' should actually be a plus point. Vote in a load of labour candidates to replace horrible Tories and you don't run the risk of ending up with JC running the country. Win-win.

The problem is that people like Corbyn's policies (not all people, not all policies, but on the whole), but they just don't think of him as a decent leader. He can be a nice chap, but the fear is that doesn't cut the mustard when you need to be the Prime Minister.

He is often indecisive (see Brexit, Trident, most policies), fails to oppose damaging government policies (see Brexit), is shambolic in terms of organisation (see everything), isn't even respected within his own party (see multiple coups) and appears to be about to take Labour into their worst electoral result since they became a mainstream party (see polls).

A lot of people want a strong opposition with Labour ideals, or a strong opposition to the Tory government. It appears that Corbyn is incapable of delivering either. Yes, some of that is due to the media, but, well, politics isn't fair.

This whole "Is gay sex a sin in Farron's eyes" is all a bit of a pain as he should have said "The bible talks about a circle with a diametre of 10 cubits and a circumference of thirty, so we shouldn't take everything it says as totally true, and in this case, I'd put gay sex in the box with pi having a value of three" but this is why i probably don't do PR because it'd probably offend everyone.

I don' think Mr Farron is even in a position to decide what's a sin. He doesn't even have 12 MPs.

For the benefit of the Twitter mob hounding him on this, I have some stones in my garden they are welcome to have first dibs at.

Really good read, that.

Aye. Sums up my position, even down to referring back to 'The Road to Wigan Pier'.

I'm considering taking a weekly as I've lost the daily newspaper habit but enjoy taking time to reflect on the week's events in more details. Both the Speccy and the Staggers have their merits and demerits, but don't think I'd get both.

The Tories have the punctuation nerd vote in the bag:

Quote:
Mr Richard Bacon (South Norfolk) (Con):

I was only going to ask whether the hon. Member for Wolverhampton South West (Rob Marris) agreed with me that the semi-colon is a very fine thing and that it should be used more often.

Mr Speaker:

I agree; the hon. Gentleman is an authority on the matter and on a number of other matters relating to language and syntax.
