The Sun one is worse, calling for the death of Labour and going with the headline Blue Murder.

Given that the last time there was a vote in this country, a Labour MP was murdered for her views, this is in really poor taste. There's no way they didn't do it intentionally.

I was assuming that was a large factor - it will be proved so if the MPs in those constituencies are replaced for this election with new candidates.

I had a very different take-away when reading the front page in the newsagents - they were saying May was going to murder the Labour party, not asking anyone to.

Well, it's asking the electorate, isn't it? She can't just declare herself the winner.

I'm not saying that The Sun is actually calling for people to commit murder, but they clearly know what has happened in the past and are happy to exploit it. Can you imagine their righteous fury if we, say, played a Muslim-majority country at sports following a terror attack and their fans or national press were calling for a sporting Jihad on us, to metaphorically blow up the infidels? They'd shit themselves and say it was evil, but in this case it was just a white nationalist terrorist killing an 'enemy of the people' so it's okay and we can joke about it and actively foment a national consciousness where this occurs.

Here it is, for those without a handy newsagents.

I'm not really bothered by it, I have to say. It's just a pun.

It's a really, really weird choice of phrasing, even for a shoehorned headline pun obsessed rag like the Sun.

It's a pun, but these things don't happen in a vacuum. Continued right wing press demonisation of people (usually immigrants, LGBTQ, PoC, etc) and aggressive rhetoric clearly plays a part in the way the national consciousness is formed.

In and of itself it's not the worst thing ever (though tasteless), but as a constant stream, it's (IMO) extremely detrimental to the country.

It might just be me, but I really don't see what Curio's getting at - IMO he's reading far too much complexity into what is, at the end of the day, just some pithy red-top headline fodder about Labour being screwed by this.

I could be wrong of course - if the last couple of years have taught us anything, it's never to trust the polls nor take anything for granted 6 weeks outside an election date (a week is a long time in politics indeed). But, heck, Corbyn and his parliamentary acolytes are simply *so* far removed from anything remotely 'electable', as according to any British electorate that I've seen in my 50-odd years, it seems inconceivable that we'll be looking at anything else than the utter (and final) decimation of Labour as specifically due to Corbyn's election as their leader, as I have long predicted.

The right wing, Brexit-leaning press are going to have an absolute *field day*.

I think it is a mixture of a sensitivity over the use of the word 'murder' due to the events in Birstall, and it being the Sun.

Well, I am no admirer of journalists/the gutter press, as long stated, but in my opinion I seriously doubt this was specifically intended. IMO, they are simply gleefully jumping on Labour's self-inflicted demise.

Anyone got any thoughts on the outcome here?
At this initial stage, I'm thinking 80-100 Con majority at Labour's expense, but with the first glimmerings of an LD reboot as well, from within their SW heartlands, with perhaps 20-odd seats?

Quite. These are political journalists. In the last major vote, Jo Cox was murdered for her political views. Just because it was done by someone white, and she wasn't as famous as some others, she has quickly been forgotten, and The Sun are happy to go on about the metaphorical murder of her party.

Had a Muslim killed Farage, and the next election The Mirror runs a headline of 'Behead May: Jihad on UKIP and Tories!" I'm pretty sure they'd get run out of business. There's no way they didn't know what they were doing, and they have form for exactly this sort of shit.

I just think it's low, unnecessary, and shows what a bunch of complete shits they are.

As for a prediction, I don't think that it will be quite the landslide currently being predicted. Despite the best efforts of the newspapers, May looked very weak in her interview and couldn't give a single reason why she completely turned on her heel and went for a snap election other than completely self-serving poll results. She seriously tried to argue that the Lib Dems would try to ruin Brexit in Parliament. They have <10 MPs! They can't do shit! Labour are a fucking shambles and voted for everything you put forward!

Anyway, if there was a competent opposition they might try to run this, her refusal to debate (and lack of any clarity on any policies apart from Grammar Schools which are the most important thing in the world), and her failure as Home Sec as decent attacks, and might have a chance of causing an upset. Unfortunately, no such opposition exists.

I think Con will take some Lab seats, LDs will take some Cons, Lab will hang on to more than expected, by the skin of their teeth, and May will end up with a healthy but not precipitous majority.

As a constitutional nerd ('Ask me about the House of Lords Precedence Act 1539') I suppose I should be thrilled that a clause (section 2, 1-2) I didn't expect to be used in the Fixed Term Parliaments Act has now been used. Now we need to try out the other ones so I can complete the set.

Good to know that our shadow chancellor has a firm grasp on the basics of who pays what amount of tax.

He clearly didn't mean absolute amounts for the first part. Unless he's an idiot. Which he might be. But he doesn't seem THAT stupid.

His point is that whilst the rich pay more taxes, an extra 100 quid to someone earning over £100k is less vital to them than an extra 25 quid to someone on minimum wage. And if lower earners are being HT for way more of their money (in this way) than middle-high earners, that is bad.

I'm not sure that holds, statistically, as income tax changes have tended to benefit the poorest (AFAIK), but it does apply to things like VAT and various incidental taxes. More important are cutting back of in-work benefits (IMO) as that discourages people from work, and not paying living wages.

Disappointed that Douglas Carswell won't be standing. I was rather looking forward to him and the UKIP candidate split the vote allowing another party to sneak in through the middle.

Giesela Stuart's standing down too. Hey, she got the Leave vote she wanted and now everything's fine.

Anyone knows offhand who runs that site? I've seen these ones before where the site is run by a minority party trying to show how great their policies are.
