Even just looking at the pictures I can well imagine the excitement of discovering a haul like that. Amazing to think some of those machines are nearly 40 years old.

Nice to know that they've finally been saved and where possible will be restored, or at least donate parts to other machines.

Arcadeblogger is an awesome site, I've read everything on there now.

This thread is probably the best fit for this:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digit ... g-df-retro

The Digital Foundry 'Retro' series at Eurogamer is really good, they're video retrospectives on various games and technologies from years gone by, albeit nothing particularly ancient. (The early 90s is about as far back as they tend to go.)

Very interesting watches IMO.

Just finished watching Man Vs Snake courtesy of a rental from Google Play (£3.49 IIRC but I had a 75% discount voucher they'd sent me) - a fantastic viewing experience, loved it from start to finish.

The only mystery about the thing for me was the Rick Carter guy, who broke the record twice but was featured only in archive reels, no actual new interview stuff from him at all, so not sure if he didn't want to participate or something?

The Italian dude Enrico Zanetti came over really well as a nice chap too, lots of love in his heart.

But yes, great stuff, could happily watch a film like that every night forever.

MAN VS SNAKE has turned up on Netflix, in the five days since I paid for it on Google Play, because I looked for it on Netflix and it wasn't there, so I paid for it on Google Play instead.

Truly there is no God.

Insert £2 to play. Insert £2.05 for an extra nitrous boost!

Hopefully we'll see a home conversion somewhere down the line as I doubt I'll ever play this otherwise.

My brother has been talking about going there with his children, it's only a few miles away from where he lives.

If you watch the video on their site it looks very cool, and the chap who runs it all seems a jolly fine sort.

I'd love to go there, was over Bury way in January for a family do, had no idea I was that close to the place, didn't know it existed! In fact I was walking down The Rock doing shopping and that's pretty much just over the road.

They have pinballs too, or at least in the video they do.

I'd love to play a sitdown Space Harrier and Out Run again. They've got the big sit-in After Burner as well I believe.

Afterburner isn't out at the mo - they rotate some games in and out.
There's a hydraulic original Outrun available, and linked Outrun 2s.

Splendid YouTube channel here, 'Nostalgia Nerd'.

https://www.youtube.com/user/nostalgianerdvideos

Pretty much appears to be one guy with support from various user communities, so the professionalism of the productions is really very impressive, albeit with some limitations.

The long-view 'story of' videos in particular are very good.

One for the Amiga fans here, a splendid two-parter that's a couple of hours very well spent.

Fleshed out many details for me that I was unaware of, and TBH it could have been a lot longer and I'd have been happy!

Really good work from the guy himself, who readily acknowledges lots of assistance from the relevant 'scenes' he makes the videos about, but clearly puts in a massive amount of spadework himself.

Yes Hearthly, I meant to say that I've watched most of that Amiga documentary on Youtube. I thought it was excellent with tons of stuff that I didn't know.

Like most people here I imagine, I have a real soft spot for the Amiga and (unlike most here I imagine) I still have my CD32 set up under my telly. I think it's a great console.

ofcourse i do, http://unofficial-cd32-ports.blogspot.n ... 2sx32.html

that site if full with cd32 ports they made possible.. as you might know, some games didn't work on the cd32 because it has a bit less free chipram than the 1200m( i think) but they made it possible

i myself made a cd32 iso for the great gravity power (gravity force 2), the makers even thanked me for it http://www.ricklindeman.nl/files/gravitypower.html

I was a big fan of the CD32 too. Only got a few games for it left now though and they're getting costlier to replace these days.

I'm sorted for pads though :)

Thanks Romanista! I had a feeling it was that site as I have it bookmarked, but haven't checked it for a while.

Also.. Devilman... Those pads fetch a pretty penny on eBay now! You're rich. Also, looks like I know where to go if and when mine breaks.

Holy cow! I've only got one CD32 and the D-pad spins, you don't know anything about fixing 'em perchance? :o

I've half a mind to reverse engineer the damn thing and just make a whole new pad from dust.

Unfortunately, when I attempt to fix something, it usually ends up more broken, so no. :(

Although I did manage to get my CD32 reading discs better by cannibalising part of another one, so that was a rare victory.

Quite an amazing story here, well worth a read.

https://arcadeblogger.com/2017/01/20/ce ... ade-grail/

Quote:
Let me start by saying that this is the most amazingly poignant tale I’ve come across in arcade collecting circles. I’ve written before about incredible rare arcade “finds” that have happened over the years, including the yarn about the Sundance cabinet found in a long-abandoned building, and of course the epic Fun Ship raid.

But this story tops even those.

Not quite sure where to put this so it'll go in here :)

A local cafe/arcade that I got barred from the best part of twenty years ago recently closed down. (For all that twenty years it was run by the same bloke, so I never went back there after getting barred.) It was a bit shit anyway, looking through the windows you could see that over the years all the videogames had gone, the pinball disappeared before I even got barred, and the fruit machines were increasingly just a load of shit £5 jackpot affairs that looked thoroughly depressing - either being completely turned off or with loads of bulbs out etc, so it's not like I was missing much. (It did more business as a cafe I think.)

Anyway, it's now been refurbished and recently reopened as a cafe+pizzeria/arcade, so I wandered down this afternoon to have a look. (It's also under new ownership, so my barring has finally expired!)

Imagine my delight to find two pinballs on site, both of them in very good repair and with a decent lick of volume to them as well.

Unfortunately they're both Sterns although I guess it'd be too much to ask for an old Williams/Bally to be kept running in serviceable condition on site, since the last one was made in 1999. However, they both seemed to play a pretty good game, Spiderman in particular I really rather enjoyed. (Plus, it's a real physical pinball, so even a 'Tier 2' pinball is awesomely good fun to play, just 'cause it's the real thing.)

I also managed to get my eye in with it too, to the extent that even though it kept putting the REPLAY score up, I was getting better at it at about the same rate of knots, so kept getting replays, and it also chucked a couple of MATCHES into the mix as well.

Having bagged the Grand Champion score with two credits remaining, I offered them to a couple of children who'd started watching me, always good to get youngsters interested in pinball!

The only other non-gambling machine was a Point Blank which I didn't play, I'll have a crack at that next time.

Fruit machine wise not much of interest except an old JPM Roller Coaster on 20p play with a £10 jackpot. Decided to have a punt but it was clearly on its arse, took £18 to show a single 1/12 (1/12 is the show that it's got a jackpot in it shortly, TBH I should have walked after not seeing one for a tenner through), fortunately it only took another £7 after that for me to get the coconut repeater for £10, which repeated once, so £20 out for £25 in.

There was also an ancient Smash & Grab but unfortunately it was out of service, that must be 30+ years old! (Think it was released in 1985.)

Nice little place, the staff were very friendly, I asked them if they minded me taking pictures and they said no problem, and I had a latte to drink. More machines are incoming apparently, along with a pool table.

Spent less than a tenner including my coffee, and was in there for an hour or so.

It was the stupidest barring ever, as I spunked loads of money in there on his fruit machines (this was the tail end of the bad old days of terrible addiction).

However, one day I went in there and just hit a lucky streak. Every single machine I played coughed a jackpot or jackpot repeater/streak for not much of an investment, although I probably only made £60-£70 profit overall. (The jackpots were small back then, £8 IIRC.)

As I made my way to leave he positioned himself in front of the exit and told me not to enter the premises again, I asked him why and he said he simply said he didn't want to see me in there again, and told me to leave.

I did actually make one attempt to go back in about three years later, only for the fucker to clamp eyes on me inside of about 2.84 seconds, and promptly chuck me out again.

Thereafter I never set foot in the property again until today. He was definitely still running it right until it shut down a few weeks ago, as I would often see his stupid face through the window when walking past.

It's nice to have a little arcade to play in again. Playing some pinball and then getting a takeaway pizza to bring home, that's some good shit right there.

In fact, I'm off work tomorrow and I can well imagine me and Mrs Hearthly going there for lunch, and then playing some pinball and Point Blank, we used to love playing pinball back in the day, when they were found in pubs all the time.

Yes we could go to a nice restaurant instead, but come on, pizza and pinball - that's an easy choice innit.

I was going to post it was one of two things that got you banned :

1) You won 'too much' from his machines
2) You lost too much and decided to punch / kick one of them

Glad to see it was the first one :-)

Lovely to see a real Smash n grab there (£3 not the rubbish £4 one)- you need to get the jackpot and trade to see if its one of the special ones (that you can keep trading on and on).

And very low tech but remember that you will probably be able to check the tubes on the coaster (look up between the 3rd and number reel)

That's really petty! (And probably quite short-sighted from a business standpoint.)

I was thinking more like:
3) Drank his beer, jiggled his missus' boobies, and blew a loud raspberry whilst giving him the two-finger salute.

Ahhh right this makes sense now, Stern have had quite a few tables designed for them by Steve Ritchie (previously of Williams/Bally). Tables of particular note by him are Terminator 2, The Getaway, No Fear and ST:TNG (ST:TNG being a table I loved so much I actually bought one for myself and painstakingly (and expensively!) restored it to full operation). Also one I never played for real but love in Visual Pinball and then Pinball Arcade, is Black Knight 2000.

Anyway, Steve Ritchie did Spiderman for Stern - which explains why that table really clicked with me today.

I'll play it again tomorrow, me and Mrs Hearthly have already decided we're doing pizza and pinball for lunch tomorrow.

Hopefully they'll have the Smash & Grab up and running soon, although it seems bizarre that I really want to play a real one despite it having been emulated for years and years already.

Same for Roller Coaster, we've had that emulated in every format imaginable, £6 and £8 tokens, £10 and £15 cash, 5p/£5, Crystal Rebuild etc and yet give me a real one in an arcade and I'm all over it like a cheap suit.

There's also a whole extra room that's currently in darkness, so hopefully there are quite a few machines yet to be revealed.

The story is that the guy running the place has a massive lock-up filled with old videogames/fruities/pinballs, and he's getting all the machines for the arcade from there.

Suits me TBH, as the modern £100 jackpot AWPs are fucking rubbish to play, even if there can be some money to made out of them. Roller Coaster and its ilk actually have some of the 'A' in AWP about them - so if he fills the arcade with old machines I'm very happy.

Can't belive there is still one of those in the wild! Didn't Barcrest get into trouble with this as the £3 Jackpot could be exchanged for £1.50 cash and a chance at unlimited nudges, which if won didn't cost you a credit so the JP in this case was £4.50?

No it still cost you a credit but ment that the jackpot was £4.50 for a 20p stake

These were also 'banned' (or to be more accurate the feature was no longer allowed to be used) for the nudge bank as well as you could not incentivize a next game - it works in two ways depending on the chip

It will occasionally (every few credits) drop a nudge into the nudge bank on the top of the piggy bank and if you can make a win with it you offered a 'smash and grab' to get it (hit the button - smash you lose - grab you get the nudges) - this means you can hold near to jackpot or high win symbols to get those potential big wins

On the first version you can also trade any win for nudges , and those go into the bank to be used later (either via smash n grab or by filling the trail)

On the later versions the nudges you get from trading go onto the nudge ladder and those are then smashed or grabbed on the very next spin

The £4 jackpot also messed up some of the other tricks around saving / unsaving nudges - saved nudges before you lost the gamble go back into the pot , saved nudges after you gamble and lose are still on the nudge trail - there was also some really weird stake around the gamble for unlimited nudges (which went back to 7 if you lost instead of the next lowest value) on early versions of this when you had plenty of nudges the trick was to get the trail filled , save all but one into the bank and then just gamble that 1 , if you win save it back in - when you have the bank filled 'cancel' the saved nudges back out and you have the jackpot

The chips we have for this in the emulator are very late ones and have a lot of the features smoothed / fixed / changed from what they were if you played them at the time.

You'll have to let me know how you get on with it. I've been thinking about one for a while now.

Are you planning to use the custom firmware?
