Those minis don't suit that board.

This helped itself to 12GB of space on my SSD last night, downloading DLC I have no interest in and will not be buying.

According to the main game screen there is some free multiplayer content as well, which will go in the same pile as all the other multiplayer content I haven't even clamped eyes on.

Underneath CAMPAIGN it says 'stay tuned for more details' (or something like that), which suggests there will hopefully be something singleplayer related at some point, but obviously not yet.

And that's the NIGHTMARE playthrough of DOOM complete.

A few final thoughts, comments, and observations from three back-to-back single player campaign playthroughs, starting from HURT ME PLENTY, to ULTRA VIOLENCE, and finally to NIGHTMARE. (Total playtime, 75 hours, and that's without so much as even looking at the multiplayer.)

Overall of course, it's a truly magnificent videogame and I would recommend it without hesitation to anyone who likes to enjoy themselves doing things that are fun - an absolutely solid 10/10 is my score for this.

Minor niggles that had shaken themselves out by the end of playthrough three are just that, fairly minor, but I'll list them anyway - these apply specifically to NIGHTMARE.

#1 The 'hell level' arena fights can be annoying because they're designed to be authentically 'hellish', which means little outcrops of rock and uneven surfaces and stuff like that all over the place. (We all know that's what hell will be like, right? Slightly sub-standard on grounds maintenace) What this means in reality is that in the middle of the world's most hectic demonic firefight, your unbelievably kick-ass marine who ten seconds ago had stuffed a terrifying demon's head up its own arsehole, suddenly stops moving because of a slightly uneven pavement, which is all the time it takes for a Hell Knight to stamp on your head (dead), or a Pinky to ram you to death (dead), or a ranged charged shot from a Mancubus to kill you (dead), and so on.

The lovely sleek mars station style levels suffer from this a lot less, although they still have their moments. This is the only one thing I would pick up on as where the level design gets in the way of the game.

#2 To compensate for how unbelievably awesome you are by the end of the game, the last two levels in particular (Vega Control Centre and Argent D'Nur), just chuck fucking EVERYTHING at you and LOTS OF EVERYTHING. There are five fights in particular, the one where you have to destroy the four cooling circuits for Vega, the one after that at the 'train station' before you go up to the top, and then on Argent D'Nur itself the three main wraith fights.

I tried to work through these methodically, but in the end just cheesed the fuck out of them with the BFG and/or Berserk/quad powerups. It turns out that the AMMO BOOST rune, when upgraded, which says that demons 'sometimes' drop BFG ammo, actually then drop it reasonably generously. I don't mean enough for you to chain fire the BFG at will, but more than you might imagine to be the case, so that you can pace the fight around a pretty consistent number of BFG shots (i.e. 3 that you (hopefully) have onboard as ammo, 1 or 2 in the arena, and most importantly an extra couple that you can almost certainly get demons to drop.)

Maybe that's how it's supposed to be on Nightmare, that your normal weapons aren't up to the job so you need to go MEGA CHAINSAW AND MEGA BFG and work through the fights on that basis, but it felt a bit cheesy to me. (Even on Ultra Violence I'd kind of been priding myself on using the chainsaw and BFG as little as possible, if at all.)

#3 Many of the weapons are flat-out underpowered and not much use. The fully upgraded super shotgun remains arguably the best weapon right through to the end of the game. This isn't a 'bad' thing as such, but it's just kind of super shotgun for close up, gauss cannon for at range.

#4 The checkpointing can be occasionally intrusive and irritating, it mostly gets it right and is generous in the main, but there are a few outrider situations where it drops the ball and has you repeating the same section/actions too many times.

#5 I'm not entirely sure the boss fights really fit, they don't stick out like a sore thumb as they did in Deus Ex Human Revolution, but they didn't add much to the mix either IMO. (None of them caused a huge amount of trouble either, even on Nightmare.)

These are very small blotches on an otherwise impeccable landscape - awesome game, loved it to pieces. Roll on single player DLC or a sequel, I'll be all over either like a cheap suit.

Everything about it is so well crafted, like the way the end credits are synced in with the music and the graphics tie in with the roles of the peoples' names onscreen.

The only sad thing now is that there is no more DOOM to play.

----------------

Strangest thing that happened - Doing the RICH GET RICHER rune trial on my first attempt on NIGHTMARE. I really can't explain this as it was hard enough on Hurt Me Plenty, let alone Ultra Violence. I can only think that on Nightmare I went in with no expectations whatsoever other than dying horribly, so was almost just riffing, trying to get a feel for how it'd pan out so playing it kind of not caring how well I did or not, and then all of a sudden I realised I was close to doing it, and then did it. Very odd. And then for afters the Saving Throw rune trial only took me two attempts on Nightmare.

Well, I think that a Doom without a Cyberdemon would've had a few complaints about the lack of a cyberdemon. Perhaps less so a Spider.

You still have a difficulty level to go.

I am still chipping away at Ultra Violence as and when I get time and still enjoying it massively. I don't think I will get round to Nightmare as Doom has made the backlog of games to play somewhat higher than normal.

I totally forgot until quite some way past it that I had got and upgraded the triple lock mod for the Rocket Launcher until I saw Zardoz' post on here - there really is quite the embarrasment of riches considering I abused that on my first playthrough.

Easily my favourite game for quite some time.

To be honest, I did it on Hurt Me Plenty, enjoyed the hell out of it, had a couple of games of multi, had a go at a few maps in the snappy map thing, did a few levels to get all the collectibles in them, and was sated and moved on. I have little desire to go back.

For £20 DOOM is absolutely the steal of the century. (I bought Wolfenstein The New Order in the same sale.)

Runs really nicely on less capable PCs too, my brother is playing it on a laptop with a 960M in it, which is basically a rebranded desktop 750Ti part - and he's getting a pretty solid 60FPS at 1080p with a mixture of medium and high settings.

Me gots this for chrimbo.

First impressions: it's bloody reet enjoyable right off the bat. Nice movement, nice pew pew such that blasting the cannon fodder is groovy. I reckon that's a sign of a good game by the way. If blasting the basic enemy type is fun and remains fun throughout then you're onto a winner. Just like Doom OG in fact.

Second impression: man alive, it has some aggressive screen tearing. They might have patched this but since I'm waiting on a 29 fucking gig "update" I'll have to find out later.

Adaptive v-sync is the way to go in my experience if your PC can't handle full v-sync (which mine couldn't).

EDIT - These are just options in the normal graphics options menu, you don't need to faff about with stuff trough the Nvidia control panel or any shenanigans like that.

Forgot to mention I've been playing it on the PS4.

Might have a gander to see whether there's any graphics options in the menu anyway.

Got to say I didn't notice any tearing, so maybe it is fixed with an update.

Indeed. It's just a shame they never added any new single player content to the game. I kept it installed for quite some time after I finished my third playthrough of the campaign, but with no sign of any fresh single player stuff to do, and with the game getting bigger and bigger on my SSD with successive large multiplayer updates (a mode which I'd never even loaded up) - I eventually uninstalled it earlier this month.

It was a fantastic single player campaign experience though, as my eulogising earlier in this thread will bear testament to.

Yeah updated system and software, full power down reboot, uninstall/reinstall. I've just deleted one of the bigger games I had sitting in the library so hopefully it was a hard disc space thing. But c'Mon, it's a console, shit shouldn't crash!

I'm not saying (at all) that the early levels were boring (at all) but it's really picked up around the labs. The game says "ere, av all the demons then." Noice.

It's like Peggle* in that when it's at it's best you end up winning by the tiniest of margins which makes each victory that bit more satisfying.

The constant replenishing of health through your mid-combat actions rather than squatting behind a box becomes so natural and instinctive by that point that the game feels even more fluid - and you have a shitload of weapons to have fun with.

*YES REALLY

I honestly think it's one of the most exquisite 'pure' videogames ever crafted.

Like, if you take GTAV single player for example (the multiplayer being another game in its own right really), whilst that's also immensely superb it's a very different beast, in that if you break a lot of it down to its core components you actually have (IMO) a fairly clunky racing game, a not amazing third person shooter game with slightly dodgy controls, a midrange flight simulator, a strange Sims style experience etc - but the way it brings it all together with a superb story, characters, direction etc all combine to make a fantastic game.

DOOM on the other hand basically does one thing and does it with such assured verve and aplomb that you're kind of left reeling by how fucking good it is, such a purity of purpose executed with breathtaking clarity.

Three back-to-back playthroughs on ascending difficulty levels, I can't remember the last time I did that with a game, if indeed I'd ever done it before DOOM. (IIRC I conked out on Borderlands 2 once ultimate vault hunter mode revealed its party trick to be tedious bullet sponge enemies, so never made it through my third playthrough of that.)

Late to the party, put loved this immensely. In the first few levels i wasn't too convinced because the game is obviously more of a nod to the Serious Sam/Painkiller breed of arena shooters than the classic Doom gameplay. But who cares? I judge FPS by the quality of its shotguns, and the double shotgun is glorious. It never got old shot demons in the face with it.

Only downside is that the scenery gets a bit monotonous. In this area it's clearly inferior to Serious Sam 3 with its open deserts and pyramids.

Loved how Doomguy likes to smash monitors who spew useless exposition. Should be an option in every game (like punching some NPC who just can't shut up).

After Doom i needed more, so i installed Serious Sam 3. A game from 2011 shouldn't be allowed to look this good. It's still glorious. AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!
