Ni No Kompleted, more like!

I am the greatest wizard boy eva. Did I spam the biggest spell in my arsenal? Did I ever! It's strange cause the first two tiers of that battle were a piece of piss but the last one was a nightmare with the spinny blob thing soaking up damage like a mo' fo' and her minions gathering around your attacking character smashing them to pieces.

But what a fight! I kicked they ass, yo. Fo sho doe. Or something.

A summary.

Graphics: Beautiful and gorgeously animated. It out-Wind Walker's Wind Walker for cel shaded shades of cels.

Music: Gorgeous. Apparently the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra did it. It also has some high pitched kiddie warbling at the end which was nice.

How'd it Play: It's bloody hard! Like, really hard. Not just the boss battles but just getting from A to B can be tricky if you're not tooled up or your resources are drained along the way through lots of fights. Some sections I repeated countless times which is insanely frustrating but I was satisfied that it was mainly my fault. Occasionally you'll get special attacked by baddies one after another which feels cheap but it's usually your fault for not getting stuck in.

But it's a magical journey across a land far far away! You'll journey on foot, by ship, by broom and by awesome dragon! Yay dragon guy! You'll meet strange fairy tale people, you'll talk to them, they'll say things and you'll laugh. Why? Cause it's awesomely written throughout fool. You'll skip reams of text when you can't be bothered but that's your prerogative as a fickle game player. The voice acting is... hang on...

Voice Acting: It's good! It's from a Ghibli film - although it isn't really cause this film doesn't exist fool. But you'll never know cause it's exceptional throughout. There's not enough speech for my liking though. There should have been more. MOAR. Occasionally you'll get some Ghibli animation too (not much mind) and why? CAUSE THIS GAME LOVES YOU. There's no reason, it's just in there as a treat for your eyeballs.

Stats and shit: There are some of these.

Everything Else: erm... I enjoyed it. It was lovely, the characters were great, the story typical Jap crazy and it was a real tough cookie to crack, which is a bloody good thing of course. Just having a gander over a walk through reveals I've missed... Loads. Some places missed, some guys I didn't talk to, a post-game fight I might have a crack at, a casino etc etc etc. 49 1/2 hours into it and I've barely seen all there is to see and do. Dammit. Why'd they have to make games so big and interesting, aye? I'd much rather blast through a campaign in 4 hours. Tch. Stupid 'value for money'.

Did i mention I paid a fiver?

9/10 init. Maybe even 10? I certainly enjoyed myself.

Seeing as it's got theis seal of approval, I suppose it will be my next game after the current one.

Although that's probably still weeks away

I have just started playing this. So far I like. Much better than the demo which is about as poorly thought out as I thought it might be.

Hang on, I'm meant to not like games aren't I?

I mean: Shizuku is really annoying, he keeps making me jump, the bastard.
(It's about the only negative I can think of, sorry)

I have a few more negatives by now.

Most jarring is still the needless name changing. (I can understand why they might change Shizuku to Drippy as English people aren't going to understand what the name means, but why they felt the urge to change, say, Mark to Phillip I'll never quite figure out. Having subtitles which differ so significantly from the speech is quite baffling)

Next is the ability for your AI characters to needlessly consume ALL THE MP IN THE WORLD. Makes me pine for FFXIIs gambit system. Or, indeed, the ability to properly control all three party members. Or at the very least the ability to flip tactics without having to change to your main character.

Also wishing it was a bit less grindy - mainly caused by the dropping of things to lvl 1. Not overly convinced by that mechanic.

But yeah, still loving it.

You're playing it with the Jap-soundtrack? The English dub is delightful and I've no idea how Drippy with his Scottish dialect translates back into Japanese. I imagine he's not Scottish. Maybe he speaks Hokkaidō-Ben dialect or something.

The other complaints are probably valid but you get used to it. I barely swapped my tactics around from "Do what you want". They did anyway, no matter what I put them on.

Yeah, I generally avoid dubs, even on languages that I don't understand a word of. (And I think it's Kansai-ben, although not the strongest as it's still relatively easy to understand, but I am legendarily bad at accent recognition, so I'm mostly going by choice of particles. - see for example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7T0hBuUB7Kk)

Also "Jeepers". Nnnngh. They pulled that one out of their arse, there's no words being used to deserve such a stupid word. (Indeed, usually when it's used,
he's just making surprised noises, no words as such)

Battlewise, most of the time they're on "Don't use abilities", to stop them using up ALL THE MP IN THE WORLD.

Oh and I forgot the most annoying thing...

How to Save: Triangle, Start, Cross
How to Quit: Start, Triangle, Cross.

Yeah, you can imagine how that goes.

So I’m 10 hours into Ni No Kuni 2: No No, No, No No No, No No No No, there’s No Kuni.

It’s more of the same - except it isn’t.

Here’s what is: limited voice acting again where sometimes you get text and the character just says “huh?” Or “Yes!” Someone complained about that earlier so know that it’s the same. The graphics are similar too but since they were lovely anyway this isn’t a bad thing especially now they’re in FOAR KAY.

Here’s what’s different: The battle system. No more little fannies to order about because now you’ll be attacking in real time and I mean literally doing sword fights like an action game and occasionally using magic. It’s not even like Xenoblade where positioning only matters so far and an enemy can reach you where ever you’re standing. Now you can dodge roll out the way of attacks. Actual dodge rolling. And smashing square for light attack and triangle for strong attacks. It’s so far removed from the original game I’m all confused. It’s alright but I kinda miss more traditional JRPG battling for some reason. Your group consists of 3 peeps and, as far as I can tell, you can’t tell them what to do although you can “be” them if you want. So, yeah, but weird and more action orientated.

What else? Gone are the Studio Ghibli cartoons. BOOOO. There weren’t many in the original but this is a great shame. All cut scenes are in game and the aforementioned graphics are still on point so it’s fine.

What else? You don’t get whisked away to fight except on the overworld map. This is brilliant. Everything is done right there in your mush.

And there’s now a RTS section where you command an army and wade into battle. Yes, really, it’s really fucking confusing as to why this is in there but it is. And you get to build towns, buildings for markets, arms, spells, little monster things, food whatever...then do research and build stuff. RTS lite stuff. I’m bemused why it’s here but it’s here.

That’ll do for now.

Anyway, I like it. It good.
