Because it's unlikely to be gaming applications they're looking at. Virtual meetings and such malarkey have been touted which opens it up to a whole new audience; and a whole new set of people who might give them money for it.

I'd be amazed if it is commonplace for people to be having 3D virtual meetings within ten years. In fact I'd go so far as to say that it sounds like a massive load of bollocks. The somewhat rather fundamental stumbling block there is that you wouldn't actually be able to see the faces of the people you are meeting with since they would be obscured by the VR headset strapped to their bonce. Games are the only thing that will really drive it anything else will be a spin off. If Zuckerberg says anything about VR meetings and other such bullshit then I reckon it's probably just to quell uncertainty among his investors about a risky venture into an entirely new area.

I want 3D video conferencing to be like star wars. The bot where Darth and the Emperor talk to each other.

It certainly has to be better than this, which is a picture of an actual meeting in my team.

We recently had a meeting with one person on the 'robot' and another FaceTimed in on an iPad my boss held up. And yes, there was a point in the meeting where the two had a conversation between each other which added even more surreality to an already stupid situation.

Yesterday we had a whole team meeting with all of us in Glasgow and three people from Hong Kong in a room there using the robot. There had been complaints the day before that the robot people couldn't hear everyone talk as some were further away than others. So yesterday we stood in a circle as always but this time we rotated the circle for each person to deliver their update at a point near the robot so they could hear us. After each person finished their chat all ~20 of us would need to shuffle around like idiots before the next person started while the robot looked on.

Obviously yesterday's situation was ridiculous so this morning we stood in a circle with the robot in the middle and as each person was talking the robot would rotate to face that person. One of the guys here is quite a quiet talker so when it was his turn they still couldn't hear him and so seemingly randomly charged right up to him in a really disconcerting fashion as he talked.

It's just...fuck sake.

We;ve done done the rotating meeting in front of a webcam before. It's hilarious, especially as someone always forgets to shuffle round before they speak. Every. Single. Time. Even though we did this meeting every morning in the fashion for about 4 months...

Yeah, so do we (plus phone conferencing stuff voice meetings). The robot nonsense is a pilot initiative by some senior manager who wants to see if it can work. We've got three permanent members of our team in Hong Kong and the initial feedback from them was that using the thing made them feel a bit more included so my boss keeps trying it for their sake. Which is fine, and it actually can be relatively effective, but only in specific cases (small meetings with only a few people and only a single person on the robot end). For entire team stand-ups with all of us involved it's just utter bullshit though.

In reality I wish they would just geolocate the entire team as there's little benefit in the current setup but that's way above my paygrade obviously.

We've got a video conference unit that sits in the middle of the table and had six cameras. The active camera is the one that is pointing at the person making noise. It's really annoying if no-one in the room is talking and you cough, because then you have to play the 'try and make someone else make noise' game to get rid of the camera focus.

I worked at one place where they spent a million quid on a conferencing room, complete with controls for everything. I could push a button to make a screen slide up in a wall to show a monitor, and a keyboard slide out from underneath. I could remotely raise the whole conference room table up and down. Every surface was covered in grey felt. The chairs were shaped like stealth bombers to control sound reflections. Every seat at the table had its own little display, and connections to plug a laptop into, and I could use the master control to slick between every connection at will.

We used that room to eat lunch in, as nobody ever went in there...

Also, I worked at a place that had a suite of conference rooms where the tables were cut in half lengthways so they were a semicircle, the curved side had 3 seats on it, the straight side had three huge CRT monitors with a camera on top, opposite the seats. Each room had a reverse twin in the US.
Those were great. Nobody ever used them.

We've got a room like that; the tech behind it's like fucking voodoo, having a meeting using it's incredibly close to having the other people in the same room. Very impressive stuff.

I've tried an Occulus Rift.

It. Was. Incredible. Even in glasses. Even with my poor eyesight issues.

Bloody fantastic.

I'm retroactively devestated by the facebook news.

I genuinely think it will revolutionise a bunch of stuff.

I was both clearly watching a screen, but simulatneously clearly 'there'. I played half-life 2. The game got in the way. I didn't want to kill people, just look at how tall some rocks were.

I would buy enviroments to explore. I really hope Sony go ahead with theirs, or I am joining the PC Master Race. For Reals.

Oculus guys are getting sued....

http://www.crowdfundinsider.com/2014/05 ... lus-vr-ip/

"Oculus famously raised $2.4 million crowdfunding on Kickstarter in 2012. More recently the company was sold to Facebook for approximately $2 billion. It was not clear why ZeniMax did not pursue Oculus back in 2012 during the very public crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter."

:D Nicely done journalist dude.

I know peeps who have tried it (they had a setup going at Lavecon recently) and it's fine :) Even DK1 was playable, just about.

Besides, if it's shit or it makes me feel sick, I'll just sell it on eBay for a profit ;)

I had a shot of a Rift headset during the Commonwealth games as the BBC had one set up showing video from one of the stadiums. The way head movement tracked directly to movement of the image in the headset was excellent but it was a pretty shit demo for the technology because the resolution of the image being fed to the headset was shocklingly low so it was just (a very smoothly moving) nightmare of pixels. I think what they were doing was taking the image from the camera in the stadium then letting you 'pan' around it using the Rift hence why the image quality was so poor but the speed/smoothness of the head-tracking was so good. I'm still gagging for a go on one with it hooked up to a proper game of some kind.

Heh, I posted to Facebook this morning that video of the guy looking around the interior of the car using the new Rift prototype. A mate of mine, who does like driving games especially to be fair, had somehow never even heard that such a thing existed so it totally blew his tiny little mind in a most amusing fashion. His first response to me was pretty much the real life equivalent of that Fry from Futurama 'SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY' image macro.
