Meh, you went at WTB pretty hard in the Mass Effect thread yesterday because you disagreed with his criticism of a game you really enjoyed. I'm not saying it's quite in the same ballpark as what was said to you in the Dark Souls thread but I think it's worth at least acknowledging that everyone (yourself included) feel strongly about games they love.

I think that this is the entire point Dimrill is trying to make, in fact.

He didn't insult me, to be fair. If we can't vehemently defend the games we love on this forum (sans personal insults, natch), I'm not posting here any more! Hell, I wouldn't have anything to post about.

But yeah, arguing passionately about games is what we do here. It's fun! And it's a natural consequence of having a bunch of people who are passionate about games but also have differing tastes. Stepping back from the argument about the game itself and directing your artillery at the person is definitely not what we want to do here. And Dimrill didn't do that at any point in the Mass Effect thread. We were simply arguing about the game - two differing opinions. About that game. Game.

If you're going to be entertaining about it and not throw insults I actively, massively encourage it. I don't agree with 90% of the stuff in Amiga Power, but by the gods in Asgaard they were entertaining.

Hmmm, that reads very churlish doesn't it? That's unintentional, it was mean to simply be a statement of affable intent.

Look, now I feel bad about this now. I've no idea why the pig comment got you so upset Dimrill, but it wasn't meant as a personal attack on you. It was supposed to be an exaggeration of someone getting excited about collecting things, given your likes for cheevos. That was obviously not taken in the spirit in the way it was intended and although it was pointed out by others at the time I didn't respond directly to you to nip it in the bud.

To be fair, I did try and help out in the Dark Souls thread afterwards but you made a few comments here and there and I've had a few childish digs too. For that, I apologise. I don't know anything about you other than your preference in games and your seething hatred of "that guy" from the other forum.

So I'm saying lets have enough of this and be excellent to each other from hereon in. Whatdayasay?

I've done the bit in the shop too, where you get "your" keys, thinking about it.

You've basically just done the scene-setting stuff then. It still hasn't really started; you'll know when it has. Some bits are great, some are a bit meh... just like any other game really. You've basically just played the tutorial so far though so judgement would be rash.

I really enjoyed Alan Wake, to the point that it's one of the few games that I bought the DLC for. It is repetitive at times no doubt, but I loved the atmosphere of the thing. Running desperately towards the tiny oasis' of light where you'd feel safe for ten seconds, before girding yourself to plunge again into the darkness and the hordes of bastards waiting you. The genuine sense of fear and vulnerability that came from playing not as some armoured space marine with magically regenerating health but as a character who could genuinely end up dying in a single encounter if you didn't keep your shit together. It didn't hurt that it was one of the best looking games I've ever played; the town in daylight was gorgeous and forests at nice were perfectly foreboding. I dunno, I realise it's not a popular opinion here but I thought it was very well done and, as a game at least, very original. I never watched much of Twin Peak mind so don't suffer from Dimrill's outrage at whatever it's borrowed from that, I'm just taking it for what it is.

I got £136 for 136 items. Pittance. But they'd all been sitting on a shelf for years, and I'd likely only have either left them all there or stamped on them for fun or something.

I'm quite liking the American Nightmare XBLA thing, although I'm not sure the horde mode is really a necessary addition. Let's call it a homage to other horde modes ;)

This game is annoying the shit out of me (grabbed the Collector's Edition on Steam for £23).

My basic issue with it is that Alan Wake himself is a whiny twat, whereas Max Payne was everything that you dreamed would be cool about videogames as a child, MADE REAL.

I like the mechanics of the game well enough in most regards, it's just that every time another chunk of leaden commentary or exposition is thrust upon me, I can't help but look for the 'jump in the lake and end it all now, you'll be happier' button.

That seems expensive, the game's ages old now. What "special bits" did it come with?

The two DLC chapters and some kind of director's commentary thing from the game developers which you can turn on and off as you see fit, plus a digital guide sort of affair.

Also, they did a really sterling job on the PC port (Eurogamer did a decent write-up on it), so you can crank it up to the level of loveliness that they would have liked for the 360 version.

http://www.gamefront.com/alan-wake-pc-r ... -it-right/

And is £23 for a full 'AAA' game really expensive? Sabre Wulf for the 48K ZX Spectrum cost £9.95 in 1984, I just don't see how £23 for a game of Alan Wake's size and scope and development team can be considered expensive nearly twenty years later?

Alan Wake isn't a 'AAA' game, by any stretch of the imagination.

Blimey....

Anyway, I'd say it's a pretty big game in the general scheme of things, years in development, big name, big team, big 360 exclusive at launch etc.

What makes it 'not' an AAA game?

But it's not very good.

But my surprise about the price is mainly because it's 10 months old now.

it's probably so expensive still because Remedy had to self-fund the PC port, as Microsoft wouldn't touch it because of such poor 360 sales.

I think the PC version ought to have it's own thread. Then a thread for each of the DLC chapters. Then a thread for the new XBLA game of it.

Yeah apparently Remedy really wanted to do the PC port of it, and MS let the 360 exclusive lapse on that basis.

AAA has nothing to do with sales, AAA is the development and expectation that a game has, on that basis I'd say Alan Wake was an AAA title on the 360.

I'm crushingly disappointed with it overall, Max Payne 2 was soooo much better, a long time ago. (And Alan Wake doesn't even fucking look that much prettier.)

There is nothing wrong with plenty of threads. Better than the monolithic monstrosities we have for certain topics. It's no wonder people feel anxious about starting new threads sometimes.
