Currently not playing Resident Evil 4 Remake.

Resi 4 is one of the best games ever made. I completed it many times on both GC and PS2 as well as doing one run through on the 360. I love it a lot.

The remake though. Eesh.

I've not liked any of the recent Resi games and this is much the same. I know that being low on ammo has always been a thing in these games but that first village encounter is just awful. At least a dozen enemies to deal with and a chainsaw guy and I'm here trying to fend them off with a shitty pistol and about 20 bullets. It's taking up to five headshots to put down a basic enemy. This feels like some sort of joke.

Resi 2 Remake was the same. If I land a headshot, I want it to mean something. Otherwise I'm just fighting a bunch of bullet sponges and it's just so unsatisfying.

I really hate this so far. I know I'm meant to run around breaking boxes to try to find more ammo and there's that shotgun upstairs that I need to get to but I don't want to. This feels like no fun and if this is how it starts, god knows how it'll feel when I get to the castle or the labs later.

Deleted and the disc is going on eBay.

Shite.

Basically :this:

I loved Resi4 , played it / completed it multiple times on different systems but I'm also struggling with the remake (not deleted yet) - my answer for getting round the village in the original games was a combination of some scripted bits (the lantern in the shed / barricades on the big building) and spamming the suplex / using the knife and other moves so not to use up ammo

That doesnt work on this at all , the ammo doesnt really hurt the enemies and even though i made getting the shotgun a priority it just didnt help.

I *did* get past it , but i got past it by running from one side of the village to the other and then looping back round - avoiding the enemies as much as i could until the church bell started to ring and they all ignored me , I don't know if some of the other big set pieces will give me the same problems or not , but its not clicking in the way I would have wanted it to :-(

I'm also upset that there wont be a wolfy friend on the first big boss as you cant save the wolf in this one :-(

I know @grim... has just bought this so interested in his take

If I've got to cheese the whole thing by kiting enemies all over the place then that's not fun for me at all.

Resi 4's gun play was always great but here they've nerfed it so much. I wonder if that's because of the DLC which lets you buy upgrade tokens for the guns. They create the problem and then sell you the solution.

I’m not sure what game you lot were playing.

Shoot a face and when they’re stunned give them a roundhouse kick to the side of the head gives you loads of breathing room; knocking over anyone in the vicinity. It wasn’t hard but it was loads of fun. There’s a fair bit of ammo knocking about in the various houses as well.

And I saved the wolf.

I’m not sure it was that missable either?

I was shooting basic Spaniards multiple times in the face and they weren't dying or looking stunned.

Same - shotgun as an area of effect weapon that knocks them all down but doesn't kill them

perhaps patches or versions (I'm on PS5)

In the original game you find the wolf before the village , and can free it (or not) in the remake the wolf you find at that spot is already dead.
I thought that was it was removed however after Grim... posted he freed the wolf i checked and they added a point slightly further into the game where you encounter and can free the wolf so it will still help you with that first big boss.

Oh and another thing that bugs me about the remake is that the knife can be 'lost' , i have lost it and found others but it seemed too easy to lose it at the start

Yeah I'm on PS5 too but I assume all versions are the same and that I'm just missing something. Not sure what that'd be though after completing the original at least ten times and being familiar with how games work generally but unless this section is meant to be played running around frantically looking for hidden bullet caches and not being able to afford a single missed shot, then I don't know what else I can do to make this in any way playable or good. I could just drop it down to an easier difficulty but that feels like it's not the way.

What should I be playing?

In a bit of a rut at the moment, as nothing is grabbing me.

Things like Warhammer Rogue trader are brilliant, but I don't have the time to settle through them.

Even Cult of the lamb has me stopped for but as I seem to be in a negative loop there.

What's a super fun PS5 game that has whizz pop graphics and brilliant sound that I can play for half an hour and put down?

A few games on the go

Cyberpunk 2077 (Steamdeck) doing my usual very slow intro with 3DPR games — may take a good six months of intermittent pottering before this takes hold. Looks great and plays really well on the Steamdeck, and amazingly doesn’t rape the battery, either. The vibe really isn’t getting under my skin yet, though.

Prince of Persia (Steamdeck) Looks good, plays well. Quite inventive. Tough, but not annoyingly so — you need to learn the combat techniques, not button mash. Has some innovative touches which help the massive metroidvania world feel less overwhelming.

Indiana Jones and the big hoopla (Xbox)
Looks good, is fun. The stealth gameplay is very forgiving and it feels like you’re Indiana. Decent size even if you just follow the mainplot, though some of the side quests are equally interesting. I don’t have the patience to 100% it with all the collecting random stuff to gain a bit more stamina, etc, and you really don’t need to

I'm playing Prince of Persia at the moment and really enjoying it. Great for a half hour blast before bed, and I always feel I'm making progress. Regarding innovative touches mentioned above, the Memory Shards feature is so simple and clever -- a button press takes a screenshot of where you are, and places it on the map. Makes it really easy to bookmark things of interest to come back to later, without the usual pondering of what the marker was actually for.

Really impressive array of difficulty customisation options too, from enemy attack damage to parry timing windows.

I too am hitting this exact same wall but with a jumping spear dude. I’ve decided the tree is the path of least resistance but the third phase is wrecking my shit. As is the second phase. And sometimes the first.

Friends and fire for the tree. But there’s an element of luck in all phases when you get dashed at.

There were two times in this DLC where I missed obvious ways into parts of the map that I thought must have been hidden too.

Oh and you don’t have to ‘do’ the hippo, there’s an alt route for progression. But it’s nice to kill it.

I'm back into Elite: Dangerous in a big way at the moment, going off out into the depths of the galactic centre exploring. I'm even considering starting up a Twitch stream for it, but I imagine I'd be too boring to watch and the exploration aspect of the game isn't exactly thrilling.

Weirdly, I’ve found an actual hippo (and smashed his face in) so I’m not sure we were talking about the same thing!

(I was talking about that guy riding on a rhino or some such with the meteor skills)

Also, how fucking beautiful and massive is this DLC.

I went knobbing around and next thing I know I’m underneath the massive castle on the cliff-face and bits of the castle had fallen into this giant ravine. The world is crazy for DLC.

Smashed that sunflower all by myself!

Well, me and a mimic tear, both armed with the magma wyrm sword. It was surprisingly easy after a ton of failed attempts even with friendly cooperative assistance.

Vampire Hunters. It's marketed as Vampire Survivors mixed with Doom. It works but the UI is a bit of a mess on PS5. Clearly made for PCs. Seems fun enough but a bit unclear on how the roguelike mechanics work. Still, Vampire Survivors didn't tell you much either.

Looks like a PS1 game though so it's not very impressive but I think it might end up being fun.

Turns out it was just a hippo but then I had to fight another hippo who was actually a ghost porcupine.

Also turns out, I’d taken a side route into the Shadow Castle and never actually went through the front doors and due to that I hadn’t actually accessed half of the castle. AND YET, I’d accidentally managed to jump down from the rafters to find Mesmer at the top of the castle but couldn’t access the previous half because I hadn’t pulled a switch that rotated the centre of the castle because I wasn’t really supposed to be at Mesmer.

So after all that, and still not beating sodding Mesmer, I’ve found four possible routes out of the castle to four different areas, two of which I haven’t explored yet cause the other two were punishing boss fights.

AND there’s a whole bit south of the map I haven’t explored much of yet. Game be good, yo. Weird obsession with fingers, mind. Found fingers, yo. Lots of fingers.

@blucey I went back to Resi4 and played the next section (the farm) and its now changed to basically be the way Satsuma describes it below

Satsuma wrote:

Big groups chasing me - shoot at one and the little white icon pops up over their head that I can use a special move on them , get close and use the special move which doesnt just knock them down but most of the others nearby as well.

Its almost like its a different game , not sure if this was a bug , something changed in the latest patch , or something else weird going on - I've half a mind to go back to the start and go to the village again to see if it plays like this now or if its just the village section thats broken for me.

Vampire Hunters has improved massively. The game mechanics all come together well and it's a really good effort at putting Vampire Survivors into a 3D arena. But, even better, there's a whole extra mode which turns it into a corridor shooter (literally one long corridor) which adds some Brotato style upgrading. Both modes are great. I like it a lot.

I enjoyed smashing up the super friends. I think there was a summons to help and having dual hammers really helped cause they stagger easy with massive hammer attacks.

I’m not sure friend with the shield even damages you, he just pushes you around, I think.

The dragon was a real dick though.
