Is it as good as the TV food programme, 'Fuck, that's delicious' hosted by American rapper, Action Bronson?

We watched a few movies this weekend.
Magnett
The Gentlemen - a Guy Richie film. An American expat tries to sell off his highly profitable marijuana empire in London, triggering plots, schemes, bribery and blackmail in an attempt to steal his domain out from under him.

I really enjoyed this film and the humour. Hugh Grant is back as playing a villain and is awesome, think Paddington 2 just with less singing. I think it is one of the best GR films, harking back to Lock Stock and Snatch days. a solid 9/10

The Eternals - My goodness this dragged on. I think Marvel were wide of the mark on this one, it was too long and baggy to be overly enjoyable. 5/10

For those that didn't realise, Chef is about Jon Favreau's directing experience around the time Iron Man came out. Chef is his own personal food truck after a huge success (Iron Man) then some less-loved films (Cowboys and Aliens and Iron Man 2).

Quite lucky that Chef was a good film and well received or the ending would have ruined the allegory.

They'd have to reshoot the ending and have Oliver Babbish turn up and say "No! This food is also shitty!"

Jon Favreau should be able to rest on his laurels for life now that he basically kick started the MCU and defined the scope and tone for movies which have generated about 20 billion dollars for Disney.

He probably still wants to be the Ultimate Fighting Champion though.

I watched a film.

It’s called The Eternals and it was highly … meh. There was a story and it was pretty much just, there. The CG ranged from ‘spectacular’ to ‘is that a flying version of that Quality Street no one likes?’ The acting wasn’t the greatest and the best character was, surprisingly, Jon Snow. The characters were Superman, Flash, Green Lantern and a host of forgettable beings. Angelina Jolie was in it. And she has space madness or something right up until she forgets that she has it and then doesn’t have it. There’s a dude who straight up flies into the sun because… reasons.

Cor, it was just overall a pretty big waste of my time.

Agreed, first Marvel film that was a slog to get through. If you are going to do Jack Kirby's cosmic stuff then make it as trippy as hell, not whatever that was.

OBJECTION

Thor 2
Captain America
Avengers Infinity War

Disclaimer: I may not actually like Marvel films, i'm still unsure (though I do love the Holland Spiderman films and Thor Ragnorak.)

Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor are okay, when they try to be anything except comedy and often even when they do then they're pretty bad.

Tom Clancy's Without Remorse (on Amazon) is competent but not exactly thrilling. It's fine, without ever being particularly engaging.

I like Michael B Jordan but didn't really care about his, or any of the other characters and their plights. I wouldn't recommend anyone goes out of their way to watch it.

Quite charming, the animation is incredible and the story is pretty enjoyable and very funny in places.
Music wise it was fine, but I really don't get on with LMM and his style. He confuses dexterity with complexity and his songs lack dynamics. There is no light and shade when it's just relentless overlapping words...

I had the same problem with Hamilton.

I watched Source Code on Saturday. Pretty interesting, but the ending definitely feels like it was tacked on to please some focus groups. If that ending was the original, then they could have done a lot more with it.

If I understood correctly, the premise of the ending is that whenever he gets
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
sent back into the Source Code to relive the last 8 minutes of his "victim", it creates a new parallel universe where the rest of the events of that timeline play out.

Which, in most of the loops, don't matter because he still ends up dead.

But, in the last one, he lives and so does everyone else on the train... except for Sean Fentress, the guy that the main character "takes over" thanks to the Source Code.

So, the main character in the film has quite literally bodysnatched some random guy and taken his place - but the love interest in the film still seems to think that it's still the original guy.

That's bloody terrifying, almost like the whole Steve Trevor subplot in WW1984.

I also watched Se7en for the first time - I'd seen parts of it before, but not watched it all the way through. Man, what an incredible movie. Between that and The Usual Suspects, it should probably have been a bit more obvious to people that Kevin Spacey is very good at keeping secrets.

Mass. It's hard to sum this up without making it sound dull, or a chore, but it is neither. Two sets of parents meet in a room, and most of the film is in that room, to talk about a school shooting. It's emotional, for sure, but mostly just gripping and hopeful. I'm just listening to Kermode's podcast on it, and his quote about Shawshank is that "there's a lot of Shawshank before the redemption"... but it's still great. This is similar in that sense. And I watched it at home, with all the potential distractions, and put them all aside.

I'm watching this short TV movie made for the BBC from 1969 called 'To Build a Fire'. It's on YouTube and it stars Ian Hogg, a dog and the narration of Orson Welles. It's about a man in the cold wilderness of the Yukon slowly freezing to death, and it's astonishingly tense. Based on the Jack London short story. I think I'm going to turn up the heating and make a cup of tea instead of pacing around in front of the TV.

Clean. I may struggle to find the words to express how much I hated this film. It's meant to be a noir payback thriller, an ex-gangster getting drawn back into that world. But from fairly early on, when the best dialogue they could find for the motivating small girl figure was "I make these for my parents. Since the accident", I was put off by the clunking expositional dialogue. And then there are over-long silences and attempted meaningful looks. Even the action is pretty poor.

Adrien Brody does look extremely sad for long periods. I remember a review of a Wet Wet Wet video that said Marti Pellow has obviously been told he has a lovely smile, and he proves it by overusing it to the point of extreme irritation. I wonder if this film partly came about because someone said "you play sad really well - no, I mean, not just sad, but deep down, weight of the world, entire back story on your face, sad". He co-wrote the thing, so his bonus points for effective-sad-face are nullified.

Matrix Resurrections is a film.

It's a longer film than I expected.

It's not a rubbish film but it's not really a good film either. I recall there being a couple of funny/interesting bits but clearly not funny/interesting enough for me to remember much about them.

It's not worth the 30 dollary-doos we spent to watch it at home through Apple TV.

They look old, I feel old, the first one was still so great though so go watch that again instead.

It seemed like a totally unnecessary film to add to the series.

We watched Gins Akimbo which was one of the stupidest things I have ever seen, but I quite enjoyed it, mostly because I enjoyed Daniel Radcliff’s acting and the further meant of my belief that he selects all film roles since Harry Potter with the words ‘WTF, that’s stupid, why the f*ck not, lol’. Swiss Army Man is leak this, and you should watch that because it’s ridiculous.

Ghostbusters Afterlife.

I thought it was absolutely wonderful. I was chopping some serious onions at the end. Love the new spin on it, the new main character was absolutely adorable.

Nobody. IDK how I even found out about this, but holy crap what a movie ! it's like a really sick adult version of Home Alone. Christopher Lloyd was sublime and had me in stitches.

My Son (Prime). Ropey plotline but good acting. Not a brilliant movie by any means but I recently upgraded to a 70" Philips Ambilight HDR and holy balls the Scottish highlands have never looked so incredible. So the plot holes were forgivable given I was mainly in it for the absolutely jaw dropping visuals and locations and quality of filming.

I watched a film. Ghostbusters: Afterlife was the name of the film. It stars female Young Sheldon who, bizarrely I’m told, was in an episode of Young Sheldon. Paul Rudd is in it until he isn’t in it and then he is.

Gotta say, I didn’t hate it. Well, until the final act, and then I did actually hate it.

2/3 then for 2 reasonably decent acts and then one which I was fed up with. Mainly just cause it was the original ghostbusters final act but loads shitter.

Had my first cinema trip since the covid times began yesterday. Our daughter has been liking murder mystery sort of things so took her to see Death on the Nile. It was quite good fun, Kenny Branagh was okay as Poirot I thought, although it's not a character I have any views about at all but overall yeah, perfectly serviceable rainy half term holiday fodder.

I watched The King's Man. It was... weirdly paced, to say the least. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't very good. Also the call-forwards were cringey.

The Hunt. By the same director as Another Round, and also starring Mads Mikkelson. It's not quite as life-affirming, given the subject is how mob justice might take over when someone's accused of paedophilia, but it's aiming for something real, rather than massively dramatic, so it gets there, more or less.

And then I moved on to Riders of Justice, thinking this revenge film starring Mads Mikkelson would be yang to The Hunt's yin, allowing him to go off on a crazy revenge spree against a gang, after his wife is killed in a train accident - or not - that also kills a witness in their trial. But it is more subversive than that, sometimes doubling down on the strongman stuff, and sometimes really not. Great, but expect something not Hollywood. As a review I read said, just wait for a Hollywood remake that ruins it (but will also be more recognisable to many of us).

I've just watched the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre on Netflix. I'm a big fan of the original so I was looking forward to this.

Not sure why though. It completely missed all the subtle horror of the original and instead seemed like you were playing Mortal Kombat. The massacre bit was cool but overall, nah... Not very good.

Special mention goes to the sound designer. Who ever it was worked over time on those creaky floorboards.

Went to see Uncharted, not too bad. Normally game adaptations are a bit weak. It does a lot of game bits well. The last 1/3 is the usual game silliness.

Sully had no cigar or tash, but I guess smoking is frowned up on in a kids film. It had picked bits from a few of the games, and is not too bad as an origin story.

I quite enjoyed it a solid 7/10

They did have a cameo of the voice actor from the games. Which was funny.

The King’s Man is all over the place. Tone, pacing, drama etc. It fails at all hurdles. Some of the action is pretty alright (notwithstanding some just godawful CG blood) but it takes ages to get some one to another. I swear it’s about 45 minutes before we get the first action sequence at all and then another 45 minutes before the next. It’s yawnsome.

Rasputin was fucking hilariously stupid though. Him tonguing a man’s knee was about as stupid as “You do the fingering” from Alien: Covenant.

Rasputin was the highlight,definitely.

The final sequence was pretty good too. But for a movie in a series of light-hearted action-comedies the whole "the Somme" bit was certainly a choice, and entirely pointless. The fight in no-mans land was pretty cool, but you could have cut the whole bit out and lost fuck all, and improved the pacing loads.

I went to the cinema with the child to watch an anime movie called "Belle", which got a fourteen minute standing ovation at Cannes because they're well pretentious. It was called "The Dragon and the Freckled Princess" in Japan, which is probably cooler.

Anyway, it's actually good! And has cool songs! The animation is wonderful, as it has really traditional real world scenes, and mad shit inside the virtual world of "U", which is basically the Metaverse thing people want to make a thing.

It's extremely very much a take on Beauty & The Beast, but it has some genuinely funny moments, and some genuinely touching and moving ones. It balances it really well.

Anyway, good movie, especially if you have a child in the 10-15 age range, I reckon (though the protagonists are supposed to be 17).
