It's a bit of a hot take, but Gears of War: Tactics might be better than X-COM.

Don't at me, or whatever the kids say.

Yup, lots of good stuff in the Switch sale. Wish I could go for Dragon Quest XI, I thought the very generous demo to be rather excellent but unfortunately I have an almost rabid hatred of the smug, inescapable music so it's no go. I am wondering about Zelda: Age of Calamity. Anyone got that? Any good?

Was pondering some sort of Warriors game anyway, or a good racer too. Already got Mario Kart, natch, any suggestions? Think I'll try to limit myself to just the one purchase though this time, or a combo not more than £30ish.

Finally if anyone hasn't played it I can strongly recommend Valkyria Chronicles, which is just great and an absolute steal. Haven is also a lovely game and one that I fully enjoyed throughout its run time. It's almost like a little holiday, scooting about an alien planet. I really got wrapped up in the life of the couple living there. Bittersweet ending, mind.

Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove is £19.79 and is a must for anyone ever.

INSIDE, as if no one has every played that utterly amazing piece of brilliance, is a disgusting £1.79.

Also, Dusk is the only essential Switch game worth playing and it’s a shocking £15.

Get. Them. All.

Well as said, now playing cruis'n blast, that's a grewat arcade racer, enjoying hot shot racing too, which gives lots of notches to Virtua racing... I got horizon chase on the ps4, which with it's senna addition dlc really is nice.. (the developer is brazian and made a bit of a loveletter to ayrton senna), and virtua racing itself brings back lots o memories for me..

Actual Hotwheels: Fun for young kids.

Hotwheels Unleashed on the Switch: Not fun for young kids, it's quite hard for them.

After first few quick plays, not recommended for adults either - it's not that much fun. Micromachines did small scale racing much better.

Some good sales at the moment. Valkyria Chronicles on sale yet again for a few quid. Also the quite fun Red Mars: REMASTERED is a mere £1.79. The immensely enjoyable Phoenix Wright's are half price, Lego City Undercover £12.49 (great fun but a bit laggy at times) and the completely bloody fantastic Fire Emblem: Three Houses is having a rare 33% off sale at £33.29. Fire Emblem is genuinely one of the best games I've ever played, so deffo get that folks. Myself I've picked up Red Mars and Grid Autosport, which is a bafflingly good-looking racer.

EDIT:

Oh, forgot to add but the most excellent The Long Dark is on sale for a mere £9.17. It runs pretty well on the Switch with only load times being a bug-bear if you keep popping and out of houses a lot. Four of the five episodes are now out and there's hundreds of hours of chilly, wolf-fearing escapist fun within, so I can strongly, strongly recommend it.

It's got a bit better since I opened up some more tracks and also adjusted the difficulty level (I had it set as too easy, so I was able to blast ahead and stay clear) so now it feels more like actual racing. I still maintain it's not a game for young kids as the handling is hard and falling off the track is punishing... but it is getting a bit better.

It's also neat when you 'get' a car that the kids actually have in real life, like the cool shark-looking one.

Ooh, is it? How's local play? Can you handily play two play with just the two joy-cons? Might pick this up.

My current new addiction is Splatoon 2. I'm not as terrible as I expected. It's a pretty ace system, you can just try your darndest to paint everything and you'll often score more points and help more than those focused on playing it like a shooter.

2 joy cons work fine for everything but football (you need 2 per player) and the two sword mode of Canberra..

Good Job is a fun little puzzler. I really did the presentation style and the little touches of humour. The kids absolutely loved the chaos and destruction that they could wreak. Our 9 year old really enjoyed it, and our cheeky 5 year old was laughing so much as he was watching that little farts kept slipping out.

As I am playing it with 'complete the level' as my objective rather than any outright focus on the scores given for speed, lack of damage - or at the other end of the scale for shits and giggles - wanton destruction, I found that some of the longer levels in the third batch were a bit of a drag but maybe that's because I had ben playing it for a long stretch rather than a quick-ish blast.

In many ways, it feels a little bit like that Goose game.

Had anyone played Neon White? It got pretty good reviews and seems like a stylish action blast. So does Severed Steel.

So I bought Severed Steel - it's fast and a bit frantic. Reminds me a bit of Mirror's Edge but with far, far cooler gunplay and fighty action.

It's got that Doom style 'push-forward' gameplay and encourages you to run straight into battle, doing stunts like dives, slides and wall runs is key as you are invulnerable during these. It feels really good to chain some moves together and blast a bunch of enemies, but other times it feels a bit like I'm flailing around not really knowing what I'm doing, so I've tended to rely heavily on the 'dive and go into slow mo' move.

I imagine that watching someone really good playing it would be exciting and cool. Watching me play it would probably be confusing and messy.

I also bought:

bit trip runner Fun, cool presentation. Can be quite frustrating to mess up a run with a simple error, but it has that real 'just one more go' sense of being able to get a little bit further every time. I can see it's meant to be a bit rhythm-y but I haven't yet got into that groove. I'm not very good at it but I like it.

80s overdrive It's basically OutRun / Turbo OutRun but a little bit easier to begin with. I quite like it for a quick blast but I don't think it's one I will keep returning to time and again. Solid but unspectacular.

At the time of writing the post above, I would not have expected to come back later and say that I am really digging 80s overdrive.

I really look forward to when I can jump on the Switch and have a quick blast. It's simple enough that I feel I'll be able to get really far, and compelling enough that I want to keep coming back to it. While I am not sure I'd score it particularly highly, I just really like it and am into it right now.

The map screen music is really stuck in my head at the moment too.

I really enjoyed Waverace, I look forward to this. I think a fully modern updated version would be really neat but I don't think we'd be likely to see that.

It actually wasn't that hard in the end, but it was a tense race

I just had to use the boost to get in front as soon as possible, and then just swerve around/block/obstruct/run the boss off the road without crashing myself. I did look at a forum post to get a tip though

About half-way through "Sam & Max Save the World" and really enjoying it. Just as much charm as the original "Hit the Road", and Max remains delightfully psychotic.

I think my experience is suffering slightly due to the small screen size and poor speakers from my Lite but not enough to ruin it (and easily fixed by either plugging some headphones in and buying a magnifying glass, or buying a big boy Switch instead).

Hi folks,

Do I remember we right that a few people here have fixed their joycon drift? Can I ask if you followed a tutorial online? I was going to buy this and try to fix ours:

EEEKit Replacement Kit for Switch Joy-Con,18 in 1 Joycon Repair Kit with Left Right Analog Joysticks,Lock Buckles,Button Sync Flex Cable Set,Screwdriver Fix Tools Compatible with Nintendo Switch https://amzn.eu/d90Tbca

But wanted to make sure I had some clear guidance on what to do. If anyone has a recommended resource please would you link me up?

I replaced mine but I didn't follow a guide online. I just took it apart and went for it.

To be honest, the controller is so small that once you have all the screws out and have taken the back off, there's nowhere else for you to go without removing the main circuit board which the joycon is attached to. Just be careful, take it slow and take pictures along the way (to refer back to in case you lose a bit) and you'll be good.

It was quite fiddly but pay particular attention to the shoulder buttons. They need to be sat in just the right place for it to go back together.

**edit** also, that kit you're looking at. You'll only need the tiny screw driver and the actual joy con's from it. I can't imagine the ribbons inside will need replacing.

Thank you so much. That’s handy advice. I’ve taken apart and fixed a fair few electronic toys and stuff over the years, so I hope I’m ok with these.

I haven’t been able to find a set that just has the joysticks and screwdriver, but will keep looking with a more specific search term.

Super. Thank you so much. I’m hoping that it will help. We don’t actually ever use the joycons any more as tbey drift, and I like the GameCube style controllers so we have three of those instead, and I’ve also never played it as a handheld :D but Ma got Bean the Switch Sports game for Christmas so thought we’d better have them working.

Other than soccer/football, I dont think the Switch Sports games make a huge amount of use of the thumbsticks (I suppose navigating the menus does, possibly some other things I've forgotten).

The new golf update is fun but it's way more sensitive to a twisting motion than the wiimotes ever were, which makes it a bit harder for me - it's easy to spoon to the side even with a gentle swing.

Yeah, Russell said the same about the joycons being motion use when playing, but I thought it’d be annoying when navigating, plus we really should get them fixed just because it’s silly leaving them out of use.

I do miss boxing and baseball, but I also really do enjoy the new games too - we've had a lot of fun with badminton, the kids really like the sword fighting (I think it's OK) and I somehow seem to have got into the groove of volleyball really well.

The thing I miss most is the little minigames or training challenges, I wish they'd come back

I found fixing the stick in my errant Joycon to be simple enough in theory, but fiddly as fuck in practice. Might just be my big facehugger hands, though.

Izzy's left-stick on her Switch Lite is fucked by the same problem, but of course replacing the stick in a Switch Lite is a much more involved endeavour.

Ifixit.com have illustrated step by step guides. I used them to fix mine

I’ve got quite dexterous hands and a lot of patience for fiddly things so I’m hoping those things will be in my favour.

Does the Switch Lite have integrated joycons?

Excellent. Thanks, I’ll keep that as a backup

Yeah, exactly that. Got to remove a lot of additional stuff before you can get to the joystick.
