Dune: so long as you know this is part 1 (and part 2 has not been approved yet), and like a slow-burning sci-fi epic, then it's great. I loved it. And that despite still not being sure Timothee Chalomet is really an actor. However, he is mostly required to set a look and that works fine, as it does for Dave Bautista, who only appears occasionally, and is mostly required to set a pose most people can't and look a bit confused. It works for both of them.

Venom: Carnage etc. Better than it has any right to be, I think. Big dumb fun that doesn't hang about.

Looks like Dune has had a cracking opening weekend so I'm hopeful they'll get to do the rest

Parallel (Amazon Prime) - Young beautiful people discover a portal into parallel worlds which they exploit to their advantage.

It isn't going to win any awards, and I'd say at my most kindest it is competently done, but the idea seemed a bit wasted.

I thought Dune looked and sounded absolutely amazing. Everything was beautifully shot and the noises were superb. The acting and script were wooden as anything in a lot of places, though.

Yeah, it does just hit "weirdly portentous" sometimes, without really justifying it. Big on ceremony. Very glad we'll get to see Part 2, though.

I showed my family the trailer for Dune and they both said "But what's it about?" when it was finished.

At the end of the film, MrsA described it as "Tremors meets Star Wars"

Finally got around to watching the classic Superman. Wasn’t what I expected, to be honest.

I decided that on Saturday I was going to do nothing but watch movies. Let's see how that went, starting with the only film from the list I'd seen before:
Short Circuit
Probably not as good as you remember, although the robots still look cool - the power of practical effects in action. It's pretty tired as far as the plot goes and has a dude in brownface playing an Indian character. Now, even though some of the best films ever made are guilty of this (cough Aliens cough), Short Circuit merrily has the character not be able to speak English properly and keep making "hilarious" errors. So, you know, no.

Detective Pikachu
Some people on here seemed to really like this - I thought it was crap. Just... Dull.

Tucker and Dale vs Evil
Ha, this was great! College kids think Tucker and Dale are evil and keep trying to attack them, often dying in the process. Tucker and Dale are appropriately bemused by the entire thing.

V for Vendetta
This was also good, although I'm sure they could have found an actual English actress to play the English lead(s). Weaving wasn't bad but Portman was noticeably "not from around here". Also at the end the copper shouted "pull that lever" and made lever rhyme with "clever", and somehow that made it into the final cut. But still, a good film, even if it did take quite a dump on the story from the comic.

Upgrade
Sci-fi movie where a paraplegic dude has a computer put in him to help him use his arms and legs again. Does this go perfectly well with no side effects? No, no it does not. But it's a great film and has some of the best fight scenes I've seen for a long time, with some incredible camerawork. It's quite a lot like Venom, not least because the main dude looks like Tom Hardy.

Cam
Not the horror movie it was billed to be, Cam is about a cam girl whose account gets taken over by a lookalike, and she can't get it back. It's interesting, but probably 20 minutes too long. But! If you wanted to see the girl off Handmaid's Tale (not Zoe Bartlett, the other one) get her norks out (a lot) then this is the movie for you!

The Babysitter
Unexpectedly good slasher film with some properly funny moments. The main kid is clearly 18 but is meant to be 12, but you can overlook anything because Samara Weaving is ridonka-hot.

The Autopsy of Jane Dow
I probably should have mentioned this earlier in case anyone was looking for a Halloween movie, but TAoJD is creepy and smart, and only goes slightly off the rails in its final act. Watch it and be impressed by how still the actress playing the corpse could be (it was nearly all done by a real living person, apparently).

The Babysitter 2: Killer Queen
Predictably not as good as the first one, especially as the trailer made it look like Samara Weaving was back in it but she had about five minutes of screen time at best. Good ending, though.

I love in this film how the cops say stuff like "Bloody hell" and "Bollocks" *all the time* to make it obvious that they're British ;)

We watched The Dig the other day. It’s a beautifully made film with Ralph Fiennes, Carey Mulligan and Lilly James, about the uncovering of the Anglo-Saxon burial mounds at Sutton Hoo. It’s a really lovely film, and you should watch it. I was at one point worried that it was going to get quite harrowing, but it wasn’t too bad.

Ammonite is on Netflix now, so that’s next up on my to-watch list.

We are watching IT: Chapter 2. There are no computer programmers in it at all, so the sexy count is way low.

Added to that is that this is the worst film I have seen in years. I know we saw Chapter 1 from a few years ago, but neither of us remember anything about it. Maybe because it was as bad as this (though I doubt it).

It’s just… not scary. It doesn’t know if it wants to be a comedy. It’s like someone took the Goonies, and Ghostbhsters, and thought ‘let’s make a combo of those films but make it AWFUL’. The dialogue is shit, but the direction is worse, but the editing is worse still. It’s a hundred hours long and we’ve been watching it for four days and it won’t end. And the CGI is atrocious.

Part one was superb, and the book is one of my favourites but I’ve seen such bad reviews of the sequel that I don’t want to waste an evening.

Though I can’t remember anything specific about Part 1, I know that I didn’t like the clown very much. Again, I just found it less ‘creepy’ than the Tim Curry version. Maybe because Time Curry was more human, and I don’t know, I always found the more human the evil presence the more frightening it can be in a movie.

Certainly a lot of the ‘monsters’ in part two looked more like Garbage Pail Kids than anything actually imaginative or scary.

The Tim Curry version was excellent.

The book is also great, apart from the fact the kids gang-banged Bev.

No Time to Die is a film. A long film.

It’s got all the usual stuff: talking about stuff, shooting stuff, bad guys being utterly incapable of being able to shoot stuff and some romance stuff. I didn’t care for it much.

It was one stand out set piece where there’s some really good action sequences. And the least interesting aspect was Bond. Now, this new agent, Paloma, she’s sexy and funny but, best of all, man, she kicks some dicks in. In a pair of heels, no less. Fuck me, when she drop kicks this dude in the neck I was like “yes! I can’t wait for her to come along for the ride!” annnnddd then she’s gone when the sequence ends never to be seen again.

The action sequences after this are all right but don’t match up to ass kicking Paloma dual handing a glock and submachine gun. I was particularly unimpressed by the final sequence as Bond and some new 007 clear out a secret island base that largely consisted of one very long tunnel. The bad guys can’t shoot; and the new 007 one hands an AR and miraculously shoots everything first time. It’s bland, it’s boring, it’s been seen before. There’s no tension, the action wasn’t resonating and all I was thinking was why couldn’t Paloma come back and John Wick the fuck out of these guys.

Moaning aside, Bond does have a nice sequence in this foggy forest where he takes out his pursuers but leaves the love interest to hide. Will she be there when he gets back? AHAHAHAHAHA. Nah, it’s the same usual kidnapping crap.

I think that was the problem for me, there’s very little here that we haven’t seen before in other films but done better. Usually done better in Casino Royale, but that’s beside the point.

The main villain is barely in it either, and whereas Rami (couldn’t tell you what the characters name was to save my life) does a decent job, I just couldn’t care less about him or what he was trying to achieve. I think he wanted to kill a load of people in the world but I couldn’t tell you why. He wasn’t exactly Thanos. He was introduced too late (opening scene aside) and infrequently placed into the film despite its almost 3 hour runtime.

Anyway, it’s a film but not a particularly memorable one. It reminds me of the Star Wars reboots in lots of ways. Hopefully the next Bond will be Paloma and they’ll do some John Wick choreography to make this film explode on the screen rather than have the usual inept stormtroopers taken out by the dozen.

Let's not forget that in Quantum of Solace the big evil plan was to slightly increase water prices in Bolivia. That sets a pretty low bar.

I want a quantum of solace
But no more than a quantum.
I know they do big bags of solace,
But I don't want 'em.

I only want a teeny, tiny slice of solace
Before I shoot youuuuuu.

This was QoS's saving grace, IMO. It felt pretty believable as dastardly plans go, compared to some of the more outlandish villainous deeds from other Bond movies, and fit in nicely with the "gritty" reboot that Casino Royale started.

Then I found out recently that something like that did actually happen in Bolivia, and if anything, it was worse in reality than it was as presented in QoS - and that just made me love it even more.

The rest of the film can fuck off though, entirely forgettable.

We had a lazy day of just watching movies.

Army of Theives - a prequal to Army of Dead. It is a about a german banker that can safe crack. 4 unique safes have been found, and he has to open them. A very silly but enjoyable film.

Widows - Not sure what I was expecting. Premise - the now widows of some thieves, have to do a job to cover the debts of their late husbands. I was expecting a heist film. It was more to do with relationships then the job.

Red Notice - This is the film you can make when you let Ryan and The Rock just be silly. The premise is they have to steal 3 fantastic eggs. It was so silly and kept me entertained.

I watched The Many Saints of Newark.

It feels like one of the old gangster movies so it scores highly with me. I was a fan of the Sopranos so it scores even higher. Unfortunately because it’s been so long since I watched the Sopranos I couldn’t remember the character names very well (apart from the main ones obviously) or the relationships either so some of it was a tiny bit lost on me. But taken as a stand alone film it was still very good and since the main focus is on new characters my fading memory wasn’t an obstacle to enjoying it.

You’ll still watch it and confusingly think “Was that black guy in the sopranos or something?” Just know that he wasn’t and wasn’t even referenced.

Oh and I watched 30 minutes of Army of Thieves and turned it off. What a load of old bollocks. No one in their right mind will be interested to see one of the most annoying characters from Army of the Dead (and let’s face it, no one watched that film because the characters were sooo good) take part in the most dull and annoying safe cracking contest that goes on far too fucking long.

I saw some Marvel movies.

Eternals - Very enjoyable and does a good job of giving each of the (TEN!!!) main characters enough screen time (okay, maybe 9 of them) to really get a feel with them, whilst telling a fairly basic, though entertaining story. Kumail Nanjiani absolutely steals it as Kingo, but there are also several other really strong performances (Sprite and Druig foremost amongst them) - I feel the acting in this is one of the best of the Marvel movies, though it's not overall one of the best movies as Marvel is clearly in a 'rebuild' phase.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings - This was excellent fun. I really got into the mood of it, and enjoyed the characters. It is funny without trying to be slapstick (one character aside, but he is superb) and has truly excellent choreography and visuals. The family is believable in motives and intentions, and it's just really fun and a great introduction to the characters with better action scenes than most.

Phase 4 ranked thusly so far, best at top:

Shang-Chi
Eternals
...
Black Widow

Not to say that BW was bad, but the other two were definitely better IMO.

Also both of the new ones have 2 post-credit scenes which serve to bring things together a bit more. Some fun crossovers on the horizon!

Dune is one of the few books to use dreams and prophecies in an effective and interesting manner though. The dreams are Paul's spice-fueled brain basically analysing possible alternate future paths, the same way that Guild Navigators predict the course of FTL ships to get them safely from A to B without hitting a sun when the ship 'folds space'.

The prophecies are manufactured by the Bene Gesserit sisterhood and seeded across the worlds to provide favourable conditions and escape strategies for their leaders, their political allies and - most of all - the Kwisatz Haderach - the eventual male version of the Sisterhood witches who possibly will have superior insight and powers. These prophecies are crafted to order and to an extent self-fulfilling.

So its not Star Wars 'becuz the Force' flim-flam, it's partly manipulation of the masses and partly the spice having a profound effect on the way a small percentage of people observe time.

How does he dream about the girl at the start, is he exposed to the spice early on and I just missed it?

Yup, as with most nobles he's already been eating it, albeit in far smaller amounts than time on Dune would expose him to. The spice prolongs life, the spice expands consciousness. It shows him eating some spice in the Lynch version on Caladan, but I don't think it shows it in the new one. One of the reasons the galaxy is hungry for Spice is that it is mildly addictive also, and that total withdrawal is invariably fatal.

I think possibly they're subtly hinted at in the members of the envoy's party to Caladan, who mentions them as part of his entourage. I think they're the ones who are wearing the opaque helmets, presumably full of spice gas. They ingest so much they might no longer be entirely... human.

Ooh, I agree with that. Most annoying for me is some sort of "trip" when someone takes some drugs and has a "vision". Fucking noise.

Even worse in games where you have to stumble around controlling a character having a vision. I'm looking at you, Far Cry(s).

Exception granted for LENNY.
