I was hoping I could get some 6 year old friendly Christmas movie recommendations.

Yes, it’s early, but I usually get a second hand Christmas DVD to watch on Christmas Eve, and they can take a while to arrive, and I like to leave time for planning things rather than leave everything to the end, so please excuse the Christmas talk.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
’cos after all there’s only 46 sleeps ‘til Chri-ist-mas!

The favourite Christmas films in our household of 5 and 10 y/o:

- Arthur Christmas
- Home Alone

Nothing else has really grabbed them as much as those two.

We *love* Arthur Christmas. Haven’t tried Home Alone, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen it either.

We’ve got the modern version, by the same people as The Lorax (which is superb).

Yup, found a copy on eBay. Did you know that there is a Home Alone 4, which looks just awful from the artwork alone. Weird airbrushed kids.

I would humbly suggest the 1966 version is superior. If you can find it, of course. But we should be able to help with such a thing

Oh man, we have Disney + as well.

I’d already bought the old one though I think I’d prefer the new one as I love Aisling Bea (though her accent is wandering a bit there), and Macaulay Caulkin is annoying :) Will have to compare and contrast, fo science 8)

I’ve seen the 1966 animated one. They’re both good, just different. The Jim Carrey monstrosity is the bad apple.

It really is quite hard to justify the existence of this film, given how brilliant everyone is in the original.

That said, I have a soft spot for Rob Delaney, so will see how he stands up.

FWIW, our kids thought Home Alone 4 was absolutely brilliant (it wasn't).

And it's surprising how (relatively) full-on the violence is in Home Alone 2. Flamethrowers and brick chucking.

There is also a Home Alone 5. The new one is going to be the sixth film.
Home Alone 4 is probably one of the worst films ever made. Narratively, it's meant to be the same Kevin from the first two films, but the parents have now divorced. Kevin runs away to spend Christmas with his dad and new younger stepmother. And somehow one of the criminals from the first film is trying to rob the house with his girlfriend.
They have just one tree in the mansion. They have the kid just sitting there laughing his ass off as the thieves get "hurt". At one point the thief sits on a stove and is meant to be on fire but they just flash an orange light on his arse instead of spending any money on this made for TV film.

Ohhhh I didn’t know, and didn’t think to check! Silly, really, because we watch most stuff in streaming services. I think because in my mind I was putting together a little Christmas Eve treat package (hot chocolate bomb, dvd, puzzle book and a pair of PJs, usually), and so I had physical DVD on my mind.

Next year I will try and remember, and will swap it out for a little ‘movie night ticket’ or similar.

You’d think they’d at least get a blonde kid, then. From the DVD art I saw he looks to have very dark hair.

Ah apologies. It's Home Alone 3 we watched, not Home Alone 4. The kids loved Home Alone 3. HA4 looks like a true aberration.

I did think it was a bit odd someone liking 4.

I went a little mad last year and watch 49 Christmas films between Halloween and Boxing Day, hence why I watched it. There is also a Jingle All the Way 2 and a Christmas Story 2 in the obscure Christmas film sequels list. I had a rule where I had to watch all films in a series.

The best Christmas film is The Muppets Christmas Carol. How could it not be? Although it has to be the VHS version with the "When Love Is Gone" song included.

Both, I reckon. We watched it around Halloween, but I’m not a fan of Tim Burton apart from Edward and his scissory digits.

We do still tend to get discs off the shelf at Christmas it has to be said. Last year I think was the first time we streamed Elf and it was worse somehow.

Is that the one at the Ski Resort with the avalanche?

Edit: no, completely different film :D Force Majeure. I’m sure a couple of years after we watched that I saw exactly the same film, but filmed in English.

Edit 2: just read the synopsis of The Holiday and it sounds terrible.

I am not sure how strict you are with age ratings, or how Darwin would take to it, but my youngest two were about 6/7 when they first watched Gremlins.

My daughter thought it was a bit boring when she watched it though.

It makes my teeth itch to say it, but Mali is correct and The Holiday is a good film.

It's not a kids' film though

Our kids really enjoyed the Christmas Chronicles, it has that little bit of adventure and wonder that kids dig, and is entertaining for adults too. Kurt Russel was really good as Santa. I think I was in a bit of a soppy emotional phase when I watched it so I found it kinda moving.

Don’t try and legitimise its inclusion. The action directly before the song lays out the situation and their feelings perfectly. The song is surplus to requirement.

I forgot to reply to this yesterday. I don’t k ow much about this film (is Tom Hanks in it?) but I have vague memories of when it came out and thinking that the characters weren’t quite realistic enough to be lifelike and weren’t quite animated enough to be comfortably cartoonish, and it was skating around the outer edge of the uncanny valley. I’ll have to take another look.

Home alone is great, but I'm not sure if Darwin is up for the amount of violence that is in it. It's silly cartoon violence but still
We also love The Muppet Christmas carol the bestest and also love Arthur Christmas and also the Christmas chronicles
and I would like to add Klaus, it's an animated one and lovely
But basically the whole Christmas section on Netflix and disney+ :D
and Katie is obsessed with Mickeys Twice upon a Christmas

I’ll give Home Alone a watch before we show it to him, just to see if it’s a bit much. Which will mean I’m maybe going to have to watch it twice, but I’ll check it out. Thanks for the fair warning.

I watched Klaus last year and really enjoyed it. Darwin was not so keen but I think that was more because he had other plans that day and was itching to create the world’s greatest Brio track.

The song is the heart of the movie.

The song has one of Michael Caine's best performances within it. (Admittedly, not singing. But the performance.....)

The ending, where they reprise the song, doesn't make sense without it.

Throws meme office chair.

I think its one of the first they were trying to do in 3d to make it work , the animation has in some versions had a few small updates but it can still hit a little odd , but if you can get over that its a great film.
