It does lead to thought experiments about how an unscrupulous but determined faction could be to get a majority in the House and Senate sufficient to uphold objections and install a president of their choice. Constitutions and rules are only as effective as the willingness of participants to follow them.

Worth bearing in mind that many of those supporting the objections were probably doing so to maintain the support of their local activist base and keep themselves in a job. Which generally means being a proper MAGA-hat wearing Trumpist, probably Q-curious if not out-and-out believer.

I'd kind of assumed that Trump would face some sort of attempt on his life over the course of his term as President. I figured someone would have a crack at him before he was even inaugurated.

Yesterday's events brought it into sharp focus that actually, he was never in any danger of that, because the only nutjobs that would try and assassinate the Prez are probably all on his side anyway.

But even one of the nut jobs on his side might decide to save him from a long jail term by sending him to The Lord Jesus.

It looks like parler is being removed from AWS. There are a lot of very angry Trump supporters.

They'll be even angrier once they realise all their data has been leaked too.

Currently watching CNN's coverage of the US House debate on impeaching Donald Trump again. Nobody has yet raised the question of whether inciting an insurrection is on the same level of high crime and misdemeanour as sleeping with an intern.

Last full day of Trump. I am so looking forward to never having to think about him or his family again. Of course, the comedy industry is likely to suffer most once he's gone. Thoughts and prayers.

:D

As polite society frowns upon inciting an insurrection he's likely not to have the pull he once had, particularly once he's no longer able to dispense favours. Some other right-wing demagogue in the Senate or a governorship will take his place and get the cheers. He'll hate it.

Even by Trump's standards, his attempt to allow people in from some of the highest COVID rates to enter the country to presumably screw over Biden was pretty brazen.

Yes, these last days are always a mad rush to pass as much as possible that becomes a pain to the successor to undo, and go pardon crazy.

Probably not a fit for this thread, but if anyone needs a reminder on what sort of person K*lly Ann C*nway is, here's an extended video of her repeatedly verbally abusing her daughter.

I watched it, but from what I could see it could be ANY batshit crazy American mom being abusive to her daughter, I didn't see anything that identified her as C-AC.

This Guardian article about the Grenfell cladding is quite possibly the most disgusting thing I've read so far this year.

The Guardian wrote:
the company provided the more flammable version of the panels by default in a marketing strategy that recognised a fire-retardant version that “drastically increases fire resistance” was less likely to secure contracts on price

If, like me, you've been struggling to understand the current Alex Salmond/Nicola Sturgeon contretemps, TLDR have a video explaining it all, but that only served to leave me even more underwhelmed.

Of course, when a party is in such a state of ascendency as the SNP are, internal disputes and tensions become far more bloody than in when they're facing opposition.

Yay! More nukes. That'll fix the NHS.

Guardian wrote:
Britain is lifting the cap on the number of Trident nuclear warheads it can stockpile by more than 40%, Boris Johnson will announce on Tuesday, ending 30 years of gradual disarmament since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The increased limit, from 180 to 260 warheads, is contained in a leaked copy of the integrated review of defence and foreign policy, seen by the Guardian

Yeah, it's hideous, like some low-budget early '90s minor ITV regional news programme (Westcountry, probably)

I don't feel comfortable with it at all. Ministers should be reporting to Parliament. The whole thing reeks of another attempt by the Johnson crew to control their message and reduce opportunities for scrutiny and criticism. Besides lazy or hard-pressed (delete as preferred) journalists will just use clips from that to fill airtime, and the Tory bots will flood social media with clips showing how Johnson "owns" Brussels etc.

The Tories' current obsession flag-hugging is vomit-inducing, deliberately making it look like they own the thing and hat to oppose them is to oppose Britain.

Still fuming about the policing bill. It's the kind of thing that people like Johnson were ranting at Labour for doing back in the day. Yet the people of north Oxon are still going to vote blue no matter what. I despair.
