MOAR DIY

I'm insatiable!

I turned some old scaffolding and a pile of old decking into a pile of old decking attached to some old scaffolding.

So, the DIY is going to begin in our extension this weekend. We're just letting the final floor leveling stuff set, then I plan on doing the mist coat on Saturday.

I can't decide what colour kitchen to go with though. I like darker grey, and think the room can take it, but we don't know how long we will stay her past the next four years, and I don't want it to go out of fashion.
Attachment:

We had a cream kitchen similar to this one in our last house, but it feels a bit boring for such a lovely extension, I feel like I would like to be a bit more bold. But it's also neutral and light.

The light grey is a compromise, but probably my least favourite of the three.

I really like navy blue too!

What do you think Beexers? Give me your opinions*!

Black granite worktops on white units will never go out of style.

Having a good amount of a dark colour is good but all-black units need a lot of light which means moving it closer to the equator or all the lights.

Thanks Nik, it's really nice to get some other thoughts on this.

We are having under cupboard lights too, I should have mentioned that.

This is a better idea of the dark grey:

Go for the colour you want rather than think of what someone else might want in 4 years time :D

We recently had our original dark oak doors resprayed pillar box red with dark worktops (same as before) and had splash back tiles sprayed jet black too, not to everyones taste but I think it looks great.

Yeah, I pretty much thought that as soon as I had posted. It's what I'd say to someone else. :D

I think bold can really work in a kitchen, it's sounds like yours has a personality - like you!

I think this is partially a lockdown thing, I can't go to a shop and look at stuff, or meet up with people and ask "what do you think?". :(

It's always good to ask what others think, might bring up an idea you've not thought of or reinforce that your idea was best.

Ask Joans and do the opposite. :p

For what's it's worth, I like the Dark Grey the most. White picks up grime eventually and black sucks the light up

Edit: Sorry, I meant the light grey

Another vote for the light grey here. I think that if you went for anything else it would be just too dark.

Going for any grey doors and dark tops will look nice.

Inject colour into it by choosing one bright hue and get all your bread bin /tea & coffee containers / toaster/ kettle / teacloths etc all matching.

Lime / orange / red / blue / yellow all look great against grey/black.

Yeah, that's what we did in our last kitchen. I was going with oak worktops to match the flooring, but I might have a drool over some quartz for a bit.

Everybody goes grey. I’d go blue, with natural wood countertops. A dark blue, not Navy, as that’s really dark.

I really like this, but our options appear to be quite limited unfortunately. You are certainly right about how dark it can look, even taking into account the planner making things look even darker.

Good idea. Also seen nice examples where the floor unit doors are different from the wall unit doors.

FAO Joans:

I have six lights in the bathroom. All take GU3 bulbs, and it is an off/on switch. There's 4 LED and 2 halogens in there. Whether all six lights function, or not, depends where the halogen bulbs are. Is it due to pulling the right amount of voltage and the halogens need to be there pull more in?

I like the dark blue and black the most. If you don't like it in years to come, you can respray the doors or get wraps or something to make it more neutral.

I'd put loads of plants in the kitchen to bring some life and green as contrast...maybe a big floor plant like a fiddle leaf fig or a Monstera or a palm and then some other plants for the worktops. Hang a couple of nice plants like string of hearts or strong of pearls.

I’ve always wanted a string of pearls or string of hearts, but they are so pricey :( For now we have a spider plant cutting that Ma gave us that turned into a monster. It has about 100 plant babies.

As for the kitchen, I think you should go with what you love, not with what you think would be more marketable, GJ. You’re the ones cooking and enjoying, and at some point you have to put your own happiness/living before potential profit, and that kitchen looks amazing!

I think the planner makes them all look darker than they are. But it is just an Ikea kitchen due to cost, so in four years I can always change the doors and plinths. P

I had to look up those plants, they both lovely. I'm definitely going to put something on top of the over stack if I can. :)

This was the look I was going for, our room appears to be much lighter with the bi-folds and lantern.

Current plan is to do Ikea click and collect and get a door of each grey colour to see how they look in the kitchen. :D

I’m not sure how well a cutting travels but in the spring I could send you one from my string of hearts? Mine is getting super long. Bonus string of pearls picture because the planter is awesome.

As for the kitchen, I think you should go with what you love, not with what you think would be more marketable, GJ. You’re the ones cooking and enjoying, and at some point you have to put your own happiness/living before potential profit, and that kitchen looks amazing!

I've just looked these up Meems and they are about £7. Depends on where you get them from of course.

I can't wait for it to come together now.

I’ve only ever seen them in garden centres for about £30. £7 I could probably stretch to :D
