Deposit paid. There are four things wrong with it I noticed that he said he'll get fixed.

1) Boot microswitch has gone so you have to use the key to open it.
2) Driver's sear electric lumbar doesn't work.
3) Electric passenger side mirror only goes left/right and not up/down.
4) Traction control warning comes on.

He reckons a week to get them fixed.

Took it out for a decent test drive and all seems fine, it's a 3.0L V6 with 245bhp so it's not mega-quick but nippy enough, 6 speed auto which you can shift yourself if you want to.

It's the SE model so has loads of kit, including heated and chilled seats, I've never had chilled seats in a car before, it's like air conditioning for your arse.

£500 trade-in for the Camry so £3500 to make the switch, so even in the event of TOTAL DISASTER my financial exposure is limited. It's been an IOM car since new, first registered April 2005, someone paid £40K for it back in the day.

Surely this will be my forever car.

My Auris passed its MOT!
1st one since I’ve owned it.

It has front+rear parking sensors and a reversing camera, all of which seem to work fine.

It also has tyre pressure monitors, I don't know if they work or not.

The scope for things to go expensively wrong is clearly on a whole different level to the vastly more simple Camry, in an absolute worst case scenario I can just tip it into the sea and get something else.

Deposit paid!

I'll give it another decent test drive before I hand over the rest of the cash when they tell me the niggles have been fixed (I've only paid a £500 deposit), in particular for the VSC warning, to try and make sure they haven't just cleared an error code.

More than you might expect for a small island. I've bought cars from a decent number of them over the years, the salesmen tend to move around from one place to another, there are some I'm on first name terms with.

So then, over two weeks down the line I still do not have my Lexus.

In the end the dealer has conceded that they can't sort the VSC warning, and their garage can't get enough diagnostic information out of the computer to take it any further.

As such, they are booking it in at the franchised Lexus dealership here to get it sorted.

Also, there is no second key and I said I won't take it without a second key, so he's going to get another key coded, but apparently by some local guy who does key coding and not by Lexus, as Lexus will charge a hundred billion dollars for it. (Originally he'd said 'Oh yes I'm pretty sure I have the second key for it' but when I asked him to 100% confirm that he said he didn't.)

The dealer said I could take the car for now and they'd let me know when it was booked in and so on, but I said I'd prefer them to get it all sorted and let me know when it's ready, not least because I work from home and rarely go into Douglas (where the Lexus dealer is) so it'd be a ballache for me in that regard.

There has to be a point at which it becomes uneconomical for the dealer to go through with this one now, I can't imagine it'll be cheap to get a car booked in at a franchised Lexus dealership, and that's before they even say what's wrong with it and how much it'll cost to get it fixed.

Anyway, looks like I'll be in the Camry for a little while yet.

2.5 years for me. I think it's time for a new one, it's telling me my battery is low in my key fob and I need to check my tire pressure. :D

One of my key fobs has died and the other is on its way out. Plus the rear windscreen heater doesn’t work. I’ve done almost 3,000 miles a year in it so it’s probably time for a change.

I noticed one of my fobs wasn't working but it was just a dead battery. 5 min fix.

Ready to give my Auris it's first service this weekend.

Yep. I’ve always been able to set a budget and pick the best car I can get, but this is the first time I’ve been so secure in my choice.

Pretty sure my next one will be leccy, or at least hybrid. Definitely won't be diesel anyway, which all of mine have been so far.

Another 2-3 years and hopefully there'll be some more options.

I won’t get another dead dinosaur car either. Whether that’s in a year or 10 years is how well I look after the Octavia.

IOM is potentially perfect for electric vehicles. With a fast charger at home, you'd never have enough island to run out of range.

Must say I'm thoroughly enjoying our electric experiment with the Zoe. It was never going to be the car that would be our only car. It's too small and not quite enough range.

Hope is to get something larger and with ~100 additional miles range next time (so 330ish advertised, 260 real-world, worst-case scenario). That should be fine to be our only car*.

*We haven't once benefited from having two cars, given Mrs Fop is continuing to WFH also.

I have to have a car for work, but WFH, it just sits on the drive. Which is annoying.

I'm hoping my current car the last fossil fuel car I'll need to buy before switching to electric. The low milage and relatively simple engine should see me right.

Wonder how many Hearthley will have owned by then?

Yep, it's increasingly likely that my next normal car will be electric.
It's not out of the question that I'd keep the Mini (or some other weekend toy) along side it.

Yep, probably only need to charge it twice a week! There look to be quite a few here already, mostly Nissan and Tesla, I see several of each in the morning.

Purchase price is a bit of an issue really, the ones I like are about £65k. Although the Hyundai Kona looks okay and we've had a couple of Hyundai's so I'd be happy with one of those, they're more like £30k-ish. Still a lot of money, and a very limited second market for all EVs at the minute.

Thing is if you're buying an EV that has 300+ miles of range when you need less than half that then that's where a lot of the money goes. Depends what you're doing, obviously but a lot of people are obsessed with range, they think of their longest journeys and then however infrequently they actually make them look for an EV that will get them there without stopping. So they spend an extra £5k to save having to make a half hour stop for a brew three times a year. Or just disregard the whole concept as impractical.

If I had a decent place to charge at home, I would very strongly consider an EV for my next purchase. I doubt we do a trip of over 150 miles more than twice a year.

Most EVs will charge from 13 amps overnight. If you park up at say 7pm you'll be good to go by 7am

And that's if you've managed to flatten it which you usually won't. As an approximation you'll be charging it at 3KW from a three pin plug. So just take the size of the battery and divide it by that to get the 0-100% charge time. So my Leaf's measly 24KWh battery would take 8hrs to fully charge without the wall box power supply (and only marginally less with it since the car only has a 3.3KW charger on board). Of course you can DC rapid charge in much less time than that when you're out and about.

Unless what Friend Squirt means is that he has no driveway and parks on the road. Less than ideal for charging a car.
