Isn't that going to mean the game shows you the wrong button to press?

Almost certainly, but most games have the same sort of functions on the same buttons so I'm hoping it'll still be better this way round as I'm utterly sick of having my muscle memory fucked with.

Saying that, most game UIs have B as cancel but still B to jump/fire/whatever. I think that would be worse for me than getting muddled up in the menus occasionally.

A friend of mine had his Nintendo account hacked last night to the tune of £160. This is a reminder to set up two factor authentication if you haven't already done so.

Yeah, I'm not 100% convinced it'll sort my problems but we'll see. It's definitely been an issue in-game in the past, even by the time I was at the end of Mark of the Ninja I was still getting confused by the button layout at critical times, which is something I don't remember happening with the Xbox version back in the day.

Lol, I've just tried and it doesn't work. I scan the barcode to add it to my Google Authenticator app then enter the generated code and the website rejects it. Fucking Nintendo, they can't internet to save their fucking lives.

ETA: not really sure what to do now. I've got my Switch set to prompt for the password everytime I launch the shop so it's secure if I ever lose it, which means I can't set a complex password or I'll never be able to enter it myself. And with the 2FA stuff fucked this becomes a massive security hole.

I installed an alternative authenticator app Authy and that worked. I now have three of the things installed (Google, Microsoft and Authy) so I should probably try and consolidate them as they're all interchangeable as I understand it.

Yes, they are. Authy is a good choice. Note that it has cloud backup/restore, which is a mixed blessing (you don't have a potential single point of failure - your phone - but it's less secure as an attacker could get your secrets from Authy.)

Yeah, I specifically chose Authy because of the cloud stuff. Not for a particular security reason but more because I could easily see myself changing phone without remembering to migrate all the 2FA accounts over to the new phone and thus accidentally locking myself out of them all. Plus, I wouldn't even need to go through the hassle of deactivating and reactivating 2FA on all the accounts to actually migrate to the new phone.

So the first thing to do when you load up Flashback is to select the Modern Remix which basically has tutorials and the rewind feature. These are good.

Next thing is to go into the graphics options in the settings and turn everything off: CRT warp, “noise”, side panels, smoothing and bloom. These are bad. No idea why that’s all on as standard. Then go into the music options and select 8-bit sounds (despite it being a 16-bit game).

The game hasn’t aged particularly well and it’s all a bit fiddly. It’s perfectly playable though and isn’t all sudden deaths and WTF am I supposed to do shit like Another World.

Weirdly the brand new tutorials doesn’t specifically tell you stuff you might actually need to know. For example, when you start you can tank a couple of hits but then suddenly you die in one hit. Turns out you need to recharge your shield at charge points which gives you 4 hits. Doesn’t ever say that, and the shield hits don’t have any visual clues either so you have to open your menu and scroll over your shield icon to see how many hits you have left.

Anyway, stupid shit like that. Oh another one is how to get on a train. I couldn’t do it until I did. I’m still not sure if I press A or press A+down. So it could be even more helpful but at least it explains the awkward controls. They become second nature after a while but they’re a bit unintuitive. Press down to climb down a ledge? NO DICK, it’s press A+down. Climb up a ledge is A+up then? NO DICK, it’s just press up. A+up is small jump.

Despite these annoyances I’m really enjoying playing this classic again. The nostalgia is powerful with this one. If you’ve never played it though - I can’t imagine you’d want to spend much time with it. Mind you, the art style looks good even today and has clearly been sped by current indie devs.

I struggled on with the controls until the second or third level (which is way further than I got back when it was first released). But I kept dying when accidentally rolling instead of shooting so gave up in the end, was way too frustrating.

Shame as it looks and sounds so good still.

There’s one mission on level 2 where you have to clear a bunch of mutants out which is a reet bastard. You can’t activate your shield when firing and with all the fiddling around it’s taken a solid 30 minutes to mangle through it. Made it to Death Tower, mind.

Tetris 99 is pretty fun isn’t it... but fuck me there’s a lot going on. That single screen is anxiety inducing as people are targeting you and it’s telling you to watch out and FUCK ME I JUST NEED A COUPLE OF LONG BLUE ONES.

Closest I’ve got was 34th (mind you I only played about an hour) and I’m pretty happy with that!

Gnnnnh! I've been waiting for 'What The Golf' to come to the Switch as I suspect it'll be the best place to play it and Engadget mentioned this morning that it was up for pre-order with a release date of the 21st. Yay! Except actually 'nay' because as of this morning I can't buy anything at all from the eShop. Every time I try I just get a nonsense error code; that's with both debit and credit card, both of which work fine on other sites and the debit card worked on the eShop itself as recently as a week ago. So we're now off into email support land (which is a .de email address interestingly) and waiting for them to sort it. Fuck sake.

Indeed, and that's what I've ended up doing purely so I don't miss out on the pre-order discount for What The Golf. Of course I shouldn't have to do that and now I'll end up with random amounts of balance floating around in my account until I can find a way to use it.

Got a response from Nintendo:

Quote:
I'm sorry to read that you're having difficulties with making purchases with your credit card. The error code you're receiving often occurs when a payment fails and becomes "trapped" in the system. In most cases this issue will become resolved when the payment expires from the system. This typically takes 30 days from the initial payment attempt.

In the meanwhile we recommend that you delete any credit card details currently saved in the system and ensure that your Switch consoles is running on the latest software.

Awesome.

Thanks to a Reddit thread where some clever people make spines for Switch games, I've managed to make my wall of Switch games look lovely.

It helps that I've had a bit of free time this week too.

Yep. It's because they're American from Limited Run games. Night Trap was the same but I printed a new cover as it was making me itch. Windjammers has it too but for some reason, I missed that off the first picture.

Switch users! I need advice.

I've set up a Minecraft Realm fro my kids to play with their cousins. Said kids and cousins all play on Xbawks, because they're cool, but GirlChild has a friend with a switch that wants to play. I've manged to get GirlChildFriend on the Realm no problem, but they would like to be able to talk to each other during gameplay.

Any suggestions? GirlChildFriend's mother seems set on Discord. Is that available on Switch?

Basically nothings on switch - use a phone and have discord on there

The official way to communicate on the switch is use the switch app on your phone :-)

Two brand new official analogue sticks. They're tiny!

After a bit of fiddling and squinting (these things are tiny) I managed to change it over and it works like a dream. I'm pleased!

Can you buy these, do you know? Or does anybody have a link to the self repair thing because I can’t find them online and my switch is drifting all over the place.

I don’t even use the controllers 95% of the time as I put the switch on the tv and use my GC controller, so these have had SUCH light use, but at times I do want to use it handheld it’s unplayable.

If you want to have a go at fixing them yourself, then I've just found these on Amazon. Really cheap and if you can cope with how small everything is, they're not that difficult to swap out.

Yeah, I’m comfortable trying that as I’m pretty nimble-fingered due to a lifetime of fiddly crafts. Do Nintendo not sell them? For some reason I thought they were selling replacements themselves, though if not and the 3rd party ones are decent I’ll get those. Does anyone have any experience of the 3rd party ones? Any good?

The two analogue sticks that I received from the official repair centre weren't Nintendo branded or anything like that. They just use the cheapest components so I wouldn't worry about these being third party... I guess they all are?

In fact, I'm looking at the one I pulled out of my Switch right now and that's got no manufacturers markings on it at all. Just a reference number 6IKa so yeah, I wouldn't worry about using these.

So there’s a game on Switch that’s free 2 play, is an online competitive thing that looks Splatoonish I guess but with fighting or bubbles or bubblegum or something, and does not require Nintendo Online.

Someone might be interested, who knows. The trailer makes me want to smother my testicles in paraffin oil and set fire to my dick though.

Another day. Another port
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2020/ ... ew_content

For some reason pikmon 3 didn’t click for me like 2 did. (And i even rented 1 after that in a classic video rental store. Those were the days) .. so i probably wait for a discount

After reading this article:

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2020-09-01-arcade-racers-are-having-a-bit-of-a-moment

I rather liked the sound of both games. So I pre-ordered them both on Switch as they're in the sale at the moment. Looking forward to getting some arcade racing in, haven't scratched that itch since Split Second.
