How many of you are on 5g?

Is it worth adopting now or is it still too early ?

We’re into the realms of diminishing returns. When we went from 1g to 2g it was a 100% speed increase. Now it’s down to just 25%.

Um... It's about ten times faster. An average of 150Mbps (which is 4G's top speed) and a burst maximum of over 1Gbps.

[edit] oooh nooooooooooo

I get what 5G promises for other applications but why are people getting hyped about 5G phones? What are they doing with them that 4G isn't already more than quick enough?

I was just curious as it is phone upgrade time for me.

I can’t tell if I’m just imagining it, but since 4G gained popularity, the speed of 3G seems to have massively dropped.

For example, on Wikipedia’s iOS app I can have full 3G signal strength and data takes forever to download where it used to take a second or two.

Am I just imagining it?

Mostly it's because large numbers of developers have abandoned any pretense of engineering for mobile with their dozens of pull-ins - the same happened when 2g took over from GPRS, when 3g took over from 2g, even in the multiple iterations of 4g.

It's even more painfully apparent out here in the sticks where mobile signal is shit - when openreach fucked up our broadband last year, Netflix streaming was better than simple web browsing.

IIRC backhaul capacity on each cell is also allocated to a particular network, and it's expected that more of the backhaul would be allocated to 4G - however it's difficult to explain that if you're not getting a 4G signal
