I'm not sure I can put into words how much I enjoyed this, but I'll try. Absolutely one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. It's best to go into this as blindly as possible, but in the most vague terms it's a space exploration game in a solar system where something bad happens. Instead of dying you are sent back to the start and everything is exactly how it was the first time (except your ship's computer remembers places you've been and knowledge you've gained). Your job is to stop the disaster happening. Along the way you find out about a long-dead race of aliens who built all these structures and technology throughout the system.

It took me just under 30 hours to finish this and I was very proud I didn't look at a guide once, even when really stuck. I'm so glad I didn't because learning what happened and how to do certain things was really part of the fun. Even when you bash your head against a brick wall in one area there's always loads of other places to go. It's beautifully realised, has some fun gameplay mechanics, poignant at times and has a fantastic soundtrack. it absolutely rewards you for becoming more skilful at the game and amassing knowledge so you know how to proceed further. There are no areas locked away at the start because you need a new ability, it's all about knowledge and experience.

I would've paid full price for this, but at £13 it was an absolute steal. I recommend this in the strongest terms possible.

I've been eyeing this for some time. Will continue eyeing it, until when it's cheaps on PSN.

I concur with this. When I heard about the concept, my general thoughts were "if they pull this off, it's going to be the most amazing game"

They do appear to have done the concept proud.

Also, there are times the general isolation, mystery and foreboding of space really gets to you (well, me, at any rate)

Bloody great this. It’s a story based Rogue-lite, which is a bit weird as most rogue-likes don’t have much story but this is all about the narrative. Between runs (and during sometimes) you’ll be getting story and cutscenes and all sorts.

But what sort of game is it, you twat? I hear you say. Oh, well, it’s a sort of semi-top down (y’know, top down but you can see the side of people somehow) ... erm ... Gauntlet clone I suppose with XP and buying stuff. You go into dungeons and fight tons of enemies that are thrown at you until you reach a boss to end the run. Defeat the boss and it’s onto the next dungeon; die and it’s back to the start - either way you’ll buy improved stats and use your XP to upgrade your character. Sometimes on a run you’ll come across: people to save, escort quests, pong (sic), games of chance, random stat improvers, extra weapons, extra stat buff things, familiars to helps you out, etc etc. There’s just a fair bit of stuff going on and stuff to collect to improve your chances of success.

Characters are all different and each play differently: there’s 2 ranged characters, and 5 melee peeps, each with their own skill trees and movesets. If you use the same person too much they’ll get corrupted which decreases their stats forcing you play with the others. Frankly, it was good that way. I wasn’t bothered about bow girl but then end up killing the final boss with her.

Yeah, I was having all sorts of fun playing this. Rogue-lite Gauntlet with a strong story and great characters. Oh and it’s two player... fucking local only... what kind of fuckery is this? Loads of games are doing that these days. It’s shit. Online or go home, tit heads.

30) Control (PS4) - 7/10

I’m in two minds about this. I was really enjoying the combat, the graphics are marvellous, the sound effects are good and the story is interesting...

... until the story isn’t interesting, it lacks audio cues for enemy attacks, there’s a bunch of death drops in dark rooms without any visual cues to make the player aware she’s near the edge, and the combat becomes a bit of a chore when enemies hit you with things you can’t see in the dark because they’re just a trail of fast mist.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s very well made, there’s some visual trickery going on that looks brilliant in action, but the story just petered towards the end in a big fucking way too. There’s a fake ending when I didn’t even know I was even at the end (and a pretty rubbish fight around a large room with lots of death drops in the fucking dark) and then another bit and then the actual end is another fight across the boring astral plane very similar to the previous fight where you just beat up a bunch of dudes, get to the end and then...it ends.

And what the fuck was up with the heavy metal interlude during the ashtray maze. There’s no music and then suddenly it’s all rock music and, well, it’s just a bit crap amidst some good fighting. And despite all the times I picked up a couch and stuffed it into a dudes face the final fights are largely just picking up cubes in the astral plane. It felt like the test level for a proof of concept not the final showdown. What a shame cause I was enjoying this.

And I picked up 156 collectibles. Did it really think I was going to sit down and read those fuckers during my game? Like, stop shooting and having fun and come and read some flavour text for a few hours, some of which doesn’t make sense if you don’t read it right there on the spot. Seriously games, fuck off with trying to waste my time.

I honestly think Remedy games belong in the past. I replayed Max Payne recently and it's totally meh. The last one I tried was Alan Wake and I couldn't get into it at all. It's a shame as I loved their work at the time.

I’ve got Alan Wake on the Xbox to play but I don’t quite fancy it after this. The Quantum Menace (or whatever) was much like Control - good shooting, decent tech, nice ideas but the story wasn’t told in an interesting way. I’d take a straightforward Max Payne story than what they’ve been attempting in recent times. They need a Druckmann or whoever to come in and do the directing and they need a Nintendo to come in and smooth the rough edges off their gameplay. Shit, I’d go in and sort it out for them for a modest salary and some protein bars.

And will they pack it in with the live action crap. It’s so terrible it’s embarrassing.

49. Bad Dream: Fever: macabre point-and-click with a unique graphical style, which basically meant I was hoping for something as awesome as the Rusty Lake series. It wasn't. It had the odd nice idea and went all meta about half way through--and I played it to the end so it can't have been that bad--but ultimately it wasn't massively interesting.

A great experience marred by a poor late game thats plagued with bugs and an overall lack of polish. Complete in 29 hrs & 30 mins. I went overboard (ho ho) with the looting and inventory management so you could probably knock over 5 hours off this if you’re being efficient.

32) Shantae: Half Genie Hero (Xbox) - 6/10

I’ve heard a few sources talk about the Shantae games so I figured I’d play one of those; see what it’s about. It’s a cute anime inspired western developed metroidvania wannabe but rather than one map it’s 6 odd levels that you keep returning to. It’s simplistic, has a ton of heart and some lovely drawn characters that are nicely, if a bit sparsely, animated. It starts off really tough but about 1/3rd into it I collected an item that gave me 1/2 damage, a few heart containers ala Zelda and loads of health items that I could tank through a ton of hits and trivialised the game to the point that it wasn’t challenging and became a bit boring. Returning to the same levels became tedious too. It was still lovely to look at and has some really nice jolly tunes and some genuinely funny dialogue so it was fun to continue with but without the challenge I didn’t get much out of it. The platforming was a bit simplistic too, like many western devs have a habit of doing, and layouts wouldn’t have lit any fires back in the 16 bit days. Unfortunately I won’t be seeking out any more of these games in the series. Competent but not exciting or interesting enough. Soz.

A great experience marred by a poor late game thats plagued with bugs and an overall lack of polish. Complete in 29 hrs & 30 mins. I went overboard (ho ho) with the looting and inventory management so you could probably knock over 5 hours off this if you’re being efficient.

Or knock ~29 hours off if you're super efficient

It's like you werent even trying...

Soz.

I've only played one of them (and I can't remember which one now) but I've read that there's a decent bit of variance between them in terms of difficulty, game structure, etc as the devs have fiddled with the core over the years; and certainly any discussion I've ever seen has resulted in no consensus about which game in the series is the 'best' so it's possible there's another instalment which would suit you better.

Perhaps, but that requires a certain amount of research and effort on the gamer to find the right game and maybe even the right hardware to play it on. It just didn’t light a fire for me that I would want to do that. It’s nice and played fine but it’s too nice and simplistic for my tastes. There’s just so many Mario games that do 2D platforming better (probably not the crappy ‘New SMB’ ones though... good god they’re boring) and a billion indie games that do 2D platforming metroidvania much better and are far more interesting. They probably don’t look as good as Shantae but I’d rather find the next indie hit that makes my balls recess into my body than the next Shantae that gave me droopy ho hum balls.

Story is alright but the gameplay is the worst kind of generic crap. I thought we’d got done with the defend x, kill y, hack z in the big budget games but they’re all here on display and it just feels tired and lazy. Looks beaut though.

Except the animation for the melee attack. Man alive, it’s nonsense as Princess Leia does the daftest left hook.

34) Superhot: Mind Control Delete (PS4) - 5/10

The final trophy is called “less is more” and it couldn’t be more apt for this. There’s no story to speak of and just more gameplay. Unfortunately the sheen has really rubbed off Superhot since it’s release a few years ago and it’s too easy to kite enemies into dead end rooms. There’s still fun to be found and deflecting a bullet with a sword back into the chops of the person who fired it still feels amazing, and there’s some great additions to the game both in terms of movesets and enemies. But it just feels a little repetitive after a while and I was kinda Superhotted out by the end of it. Shame.

Devolver does it again with this crazy game about being an amorphous blob that eats folks. You’re the monster that wants to escape so...you do. Over the course of about 4 hours you’ll traverse a metroidvania-style map gaining new abilities to explore new areas and unlock the next thing. It’s mainly a sort of light puzzle game with killing stuff though.

The movement of the monster is, without a shadow of a doubt, absolutely fucking spot on as tendrils grab the walls and your huge slithering vagina mouths slide behind, dragging and swinging and occasionally eating people. Sometimes you’ll jam a tendril into the brain of a human and force him to murder his friends and colleagues. Sometimes you’ll stick him in an ED-209 and melt people’s faces. The sound effects are great (especially the slithering) and the buzz of a rotary cannon reminded me of that Amiga game Walker.

It’s not hard but the combat can be a bit scrappy at times. There’s some frustrations and occasionally getting lost not knowing where to go next. There isn’t a map either to compound the problem, but it moves about so swiftly and the maps aren’t that large so you’ll figure it out eventually in not so much time.

Overall it’s disposable but memorable.

What a terrible review that tells you barely anything about the game. Lord knows how he’s got 10 hours clocked on it too. I got 5 of the 9 secret areas in 4 hours and I could spend, say, another hour mopping them up if I could be arsed and I’d have seen everything the game has to offer.

Again, this is one of those games I’ve heard good things about but never played. It’s similar to The Messenger, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon and all those “pretend to be a NES game”-games.

Great tunes, lovely pixel art, good humour, lots of heart, great characters and a surprisingly nice story. It’s even got a Mario 3 style over world.

I’m sure it doesn’t do anything original but I reckon this is damn near perfect.

You pick up a sword that makes you die after 60 seconds. And restart. (although with the changes you've made to the world kept) Quite fun. Quite short (Took me about 80 minites to complete)

Why so short? Cleared it in 5 hours and I was really taking my time rummaging about in every bin and stockpiling ammo and health for that big fight I was always sure was just around the corner leaving me with a ton of shit even after the final fight. I do the same bloody thing in every game. Tch.

So Resi 3 looks terrific (looks like 2) and has a brand new story but this time there’s only one story as opposed to 2’s 2. So when is clocked it at 4 hours and 55 minutes I was immensely disappointed that there wasn’t anything more. Nothing. Well, you unlock a shop and now play the same game for more points to spend on crap but I won’t be doing that.

It’s a good game for sure but it’s just so short that it’s difficult to recommend to anyone unless it’s on sale. I mean, I got it for £20 and that’s a fair price for the quality, but they were selling this thing for sixty quid which is crazy.

Nemesis is fine but he isn’t scary, less scary than Mr X perhaps? He does the same stuff but in the latter half of the game (so only a couple of hours in) he’s relegated to being just a repeating boss fight. If there was more game and more of him chasing you about i think that would have been better.

Oh and where’s the puzzles? This game is almost all action, and again, after the half way point it gets really narrow and linear.

The story is the same as before as well and it’s really old and trite now. Especially the character motivations which are “I did it for the money” which is sooo fucking lazy. These one dimensional baddies without any nuance, but this is a Resi game so, y’know, what can you expect (everyone: “better”).

Still, Jill looks amazing and she’s a sexy badass. I don’t know why gamers moan about female characters; some of the best protagonists I’ve played this year had awesome women as the star.

If you enjoyed Resi 2 then wait for a sale and grab this for a few hours of the same.

I didn’t mind Resi 6 that much. You certainly got your monies worth. They doubled down on coop and tried something different and whereas it didn’t quite pay off at least they gave it a bloody good shot. I’m sure I got a good 30 hours out of it.

Gotta say, I’m loving these Shovel Knight games. This is the same game, same levels but with a new character who has his own story and completely different moveset that relies on being airborne. Slightly less enjoyable than the first SK but still very enjoyable. I’d recommend these games a lot. I’ve got two more to have a go at and I’m still not bored of them.

39) Shovel Knight: Spectre of Torment (PS4) - 9/10

This just goes to show that the excellence of Shovel Knight wasn’t luck. This is set before the SK story and acts as a prequel to the main event. The levels are all new but the worlds are the same. The protagonist this time can wall run and do moves like The Messenger. He’s less tricky than Plague Knight to use thankfully.

It’s just genuinely great fun 8-bit style platforming adventure. Again. And I just bloody loved it.

50. Assemble With Care: repair-em-up from the creators of Monument Valley. Your character is travelling around repairing stuff (everything from broken statues, old cassette players, watches, etc) to pay her way and you take control as she hits her final destination and begins contemplating returning home to patch up her relationship with her parents. Each stage gives you an item to repair and fills in some backstory of the owner of the item before and after the actual repair. The look and sound of it's polished to high heaven as you'd expect from Ustwo but the actual gameplay is a bit lacking. I wasn't expecting much depth and was happy just to tinker with the broken items but there was even less challenge that I was expecting in that aspect. Also, the controls are really irritating in places and it seems to have been designed by someone who's willfully ignorant of the fact that a mouse has more than one useable button. So a pleasant enough experience but a missed opportunity in terms of not having a bit more meat to the repair sections plus the needlessly stupid controls.

I played this a while ago on the iPhone , I think it was probably designed with phone / touch screens in mind which will be why it does not realise you can have multiple buttons on a mouse

51. Uncharted 4: technically I didn't finish this second playthrough because my PS4 finally died completely before I could, but I was only about an hour from the end so I'm counting it. Most of it was as fun as I remember--stealth murdering a whole load of guys just never gets old--and certainly it remains one of the most incredible looking things I've ever seen. Also, aside from Nate's wife inexplicably and suddenly forgiving him for being a massive prick, the character work and overall plot is just brilliant. The dreaded 'combat arena' stuff though throws a bigger shadow over the entire thing than I remember from the first time around. Specifically one of the final levels is just one horrendous encounter after another for ages and it frustrated the shit out of me before I just dropped the difficulty down and carried on. The armoured shotgun guys are a know entity, but this game introduces armoured chain gun guys which is just cuntery above and beyond the usual call. The shotgun guys need to have their armour wittled down but the balancing factor is their lack of range. The chain gun fucks have the same armour issue to deal with but now they can destroy your health from halfway across the map. Throw two of them into a relatively small area plus the general harassment of normal enemies and the entire thing can just get fucked. Basically you need to be some kind of headshot king or you've got no chance and it's pretty miserable stuff. No doubt it's made worse here because that was the last level I did before my PS4 refused to boot up so it's left that taste in my mouth, but if you do finish the game then it doesn't end on such a sour note. Anyway, still a brilliant game but just be aware of this nonsense.

Oh, yeah, that's definitely the case. But letting you, say, use the right-mouse button to spin objects and the left mouse to interact would've just been so, so much better than what they did and is such a trivial thing to do that I can't really forgive them for not doing it. It's just so lazy and needless.

 If you were very close to the end and would've definitely finished them if not for reasons completely out of your control then I'd support you in that.

Not to ruin your fun but didn’t we have a thread for games we didn’t finish and then abandoned? I’ve tried looking but can’t find it, mind.

Yeah, I think I might've even started it but can't find it now either.

Craster, Gaywood and I (with occasional special guest Wookie) started playing this 24 days ago. We literally played every night until last night we finally got off our asses and rescued our son.

The Forest is janky as fuck, it's buggy, the physics breaks, the co-op flips between being tacked on and working really nicely, and building stuff is infuriatingly fiddly. But we loved it. The base we built on our tiny island is quite the fucking thing.

40) Shovel Knight: King of Cards (PS4) - 9/10

Are the Shovel Knight games the best 2D platformers made this generation? Yes. Yes they are.

King of Cards has a brand new map, new moves (this time a shoulder barge that can combine into a spin amongst other things), a new story (also very funny), returning and new characters (shout out to the king who wants to boink the King Knight’s mum) and a brand new card game. Yup, the titular card game that took me ages to figure out but is surprisingly bloody good fun and challenging.

Are the Shovel Knight games better than Super Mario Bros 3? I’m going to say it’s pretty equal. They’re that good.

Here’s me bouncing around having a jolly old good time to some funky toons.

Yeah it’s still the same and still a good time. Bloody annoying that the multiplayer isn’t here though because as you run through some of the maps in the campaign you get pangs of nostalgia. And after all these years I didn’t realise that the final fight actually happens on the Rust map!

I guess they don’t want people playing this instead of the reboot.
