Not so much here in East Herts. It's not that far, but never "Hemel".

Interesting. Are you one of those people who pronounce it Emile, a la Heskey? I hear that a lot.

The dude is an author, and the thread journey is contrived to get to the conclusion so far.

Brexit ex pat parents.
Labourer son who is both incredibly stupid but mysteriously well informed.
The author is friends with the mayor
The mayor is willing to play along.
The son's reponse is always a tick box in ill-informed low level racism triggers.
Throw in a luddite solictor, who is paranoid about webcams, but more than happy to divulge any and all information to a random author who has no interest in the situation.
Add a touch of outraged boss who is willing to slag off his amusingly dodgy employee.

It's entertaining, but it's all made up.

Is he though? I did an admittedly very small amount of Googling earlier and couldn't find anything about an author RS Archer writing 'David Saunders' books. Which is weird in itself, why make such a public claim when it's easily proven to be nonsense?

R.S. Archer.
Wrote a series of books, bought a boat, got prostate cancer, died an American hero. RIP this stock photo. May it rest in peace.

Aye. Embarrassing and pathetic. You'd have thought that the Eurosceptics would, over 40 years, have actually come up with some idea of what leaving might look like. Unfortunately, I'm now reconciling myself to the forthcoming disaster because no amount of warnings or request for more detail on how such-and-such a change is actually an improvement has ever yielded any decent response. I'd have thought Dominic Cummings and his superforecasters would have been all over the benefits of not being in a single market or customs union with our closest neighbours (let alone a part of the same country!) but here we are.

Another day, news of another government advertising campaign about how excitingly complicated and burdensome life after 1st January will be. The only ray of light might be that actually introducing all of this makes people realise just how much of a ride they've been taken on, but it would still take years to rectify.

Who do you think will bear the increased costs of imported food?

1) the supplier
2) the supermarket
3) the customer

Gonna be spendy.

The BBC [url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-53685266] that the government are spending £355m to help businesses with new customs forms when moving goods from Northern Ireland to Great Britain. Nowhere in the article does it mention that this something Mr Johnson repeatedly said would never happen, and that he would be happy for companies to send him any forms to throw away.

This is, of course, all on top of the plans to turn Kent into a car park. Unfortunately we're in for a tough few years whilst we wait for the chlorinated chickens to come home to roost.

Unlike similar moments last year I'm not watching the debate today because I'm currently in a good mood and I don't particularly want having to listen to the abhorrent and useless cretins that make up a ruling party for any time longer than necessary.

All I will say to both forum regulars and any passing MPs (particularly from north east Oxfordshire) is [cue Mr Giphy from stage right]:

There's a slight chance Johnson will sign anything offered to him at the last minute and claim it as a major victory. He does have form on this.

At the back of his mind, he probably realises that any extended period of disruption and photos of empty shelves will always be tied to his time in office, and something Labour et al would be foolish to not take advantage of for another eighteen years.

Hmm...Shortages and emergencies whilst leaving Europe would bookend things nicely with Edward Heath.

I am completely lost with all this now. Are they secretly confident that there will definitely be some kind of deal and this is just for show? Or do they believe that there won't and they're actually really planning to go with this utter fucking shitshow?

There's going to have be to some form of checks regardless of whether we get a deal or not, but the extent and nature of them will vary depending on precise arrangements that are agreed.

All this, by the way, is what "cutting EU red tape" means.

Secretly, they've replaced all the UK's stock of red tape with puce and mauve tape so they can be technically correct.

Unexpected Charles II cameo.

Guardian wrote:
Belgian ambassador throws King Charles II treaty into EU fishing debate
...
When the issue of the future access of European fishing fleets was being discussed by EU ambassadors in Brussels on Wednesday the Belgian government’s representative, Willem van de Voorde, made a notable intervention.

To the confusion of some, and the delight of others, the ambassador cited a treaty signed some 350 years ago by King Charles II which had granted 50 Flemish fishermen from Bruges “eternal rights” to English fishing waters. It was an important historical footnote illustrating the long relationship between Belgian fishermen and British waters, Van de Voorde suggested

Of course, were Charlie here today, he'd just agree a secret treaty with the French and take a regular brown envelope payment from their king. And then party, obviously.

The problem is that Brexit-as-a-reality is always going to be different to Brexit-as-an-idea, and if the expected chaos happens they will claim it will only ever be because it wasn't done right.

I struggle to understand how anyone could hear about piles of new paperwork, Kent access permits, delays at ports etc and still think this is a good idea. Of course, most of that is invisible, until the prices start rising and supplies drop off course.

As a sign of changing circumstances and the slow drip of the new found freedom-from-being-faff-free I received a note from the organiser of board game Kickstarter I backed way back today, saying that they couldn't guarantee UK deliveries to be free of custom charges when it ships in February.

Yeah, but although increased costs will be passed on to the customers*, I think there's going to be a trimming of margins across the industry, and that loss of profitability would need to be recovered somewhere.

*A deal viewed as "moderate" would be about 10% more on the weekly food shop, I think, no deal would be more like 20%. Which is fucking mental, given the use of the rise of food banks, and for a government to knowingly make this choice is fucking abhorrent.
