30. Chronology: a puzzle-platformer where you switch at will between (a) a scientist guy who can move between current and past versions of the game world which changes certain key features of the landscape and (b) a cybernetic snail (!) who can pause time and be used as a sort of mobile platform. Between the two of them you solve puzzles and move left to right through the levels. Looks nice and plays very well.

32. Samsara Room: Samsara Room was the 2013 precursor to the Rusty Lake/Cube Escape series of delightfully macabre and twisted 'room escape' games which has been given a remaster and update to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the main series. I'm not sure if I played the original version but this one's every bit as interesting, logical and weird as it's sibling games so just as worth seeking out, especially as it's free.

Brilliant! Play it co-op on Hard or above and it’s a blast and reasonably challenging. It’s a nice challenge and looks and sounds great. Unfortunately it’s not that long (2-3 hours maybe) (hence play it on the higher difficulties) and at £30 it’s a difficult proposition to recommend. But on Game Pass for nothing but the price of the subscription it’s fucking amazing value and is a must play.

33. Voxelgram: picross in general is possibly the single game I've spent most time playing. Beginning with web based versions then onto LogicSquare which has been installed on pretty much every Android phone I've owned.

Nintendo released a version of it for the DS called Picross 3D which turned the grid into a cube and I was utterly fucked hooked on it for the time it took me to work through all the levels. A few random Android devs have taken a crack at that over the years but always pretty half-heartedly, and for some reason Nintendo themselves don't seem intent on doing anything with the concept. So I was very, very happy indeed when I stumbled across Voxelgram a while back and it was downloaded to my Switch with a fucking quickness.

It's clunkier to control than the original but the stylus of the DS was so ideal for the job that it's difficult to hold that against them. I did spend some time fighting with the controls but it doesn't take long to master them and then you've basically got fucking Picross 3D! The difficulty takes a bit long to ramp up with only the final few level sets really providing a challenge, but given the amount of time I've sunk into the game possibly I'm not the best yardstick for that. I've finished all 190 of the fixed levels but there's a 'random' option which generates puzzles on the fly with various themes so I'll likely still be firing this up for a go every now and again forever. Yas!

If you've never played it before there's loads of free 2D picross/nonogram games around the place you can check out for a taste.

Rather good interactive novel that’s pleasingly written and fun. The main story is 4 chapters deep but then there’s a large a sort of extra chapter that’s completely unconnected that I was struggling to find much interest in. This new chapter has a few new interactive moments too like spraying the scene for clues and stuff that was alright but it retreads old ground from the main story about an old ‘unsolved’ case.

Unfortunately I’ve no desire to play another on my big telly.

Mind you, I did cross exam a parrot.

40. A Mortician's Tale: you play as a mortician going through her daily duties of embalming, cremating and generally working on corpses before attending the wake and listening to the chatter of the deceased's friends and family. The story plays out mostly from reading your emails each day before you get on with the job at hand. Each 'case' only take a couple of minutes of active interaction to run through and there's only a handful of them so the entire thing's done and dusted in half an hour. There's no fail state and you literally can't do anything wrong so no real agency; this is a story with some slight interactive elements. Which is fine in itself; and it's interesting to learn about the mechanics of embalming and cremation*--plus one of your daily emails goes into more details about new stuff going on like more environmentally friendly idea that some people are adopting when it comes to their death--but just don't go in expecting anything more than that.

*Did you know that after a cremation the urn of 'ashes' the family gets isn't ash at all, but actually the result of grinding down the left-over bones in a 'cremulator' machine? I genuinely didn't.

I knew also, and I think it’s because it’s in the dialogue of a film I’ve seen, though I can’t even start to think which one.

41. Starman: a puzzle game for pretty much all the platforms which sees you doing the usual box/switch/portal/whatever manipulation to power up things and escape the level. Starts off very slow and boring but the puzzle variety and difficulty picks up after a bit and things get much more interesting, with only some iffy physics in a couple of levels holding things back. It's also really, really fucking dark on the Switch screen which was mildly annoying, something that's rubbed in a bit when you finish the game and it briefly blooms from it's monochromatic look to something beautifully colourful and you see what you could've been playing all this time if not for this weird art direction.

Arguably the most interesting thing about it is when you finish it and the 'Flow Mode' is unlocked. Despite the name though it's not a different approach to the levels you've played, it's pretty much a different game entirely. It's like a tiny wee open world that you can explore and dick around in that's filled with environmental puzzles you have to figure out from observing stuff. Despite some pretty obscure aspects it's great fun and a refreshing change of pace from what came before. It's main mechanic is being able to change the weather at will so you go from sailing your boat around during a lightning storm to freezing everything so you can eschew the boat entirely and instead ice skate your character around the lake that's at the centre of thing.

Don't get me wrong, it still feels a lot like a mobile game in places (probably because it started out there as far as I can tell) but it's much more fun than I expected it would at the start an certainly I got much more than my 99p moneys worth out of it.

42. What The Golf?: quirky and ridiculous (in a good way) puzzle game of sorts where everything is golf. Basically every bite size level involves you charging up the traditional power/direction arrow from classic golf games and firing stuff around in order to get to the flag. Sometimes you're hitting a ball, sometimes a club, sometimes a house, sometimes your own character model. It escalates ridiculously from there and some of the idea you come up against are very imaginative; even as they purposely and obvously rip off everything from Portal to Getting Over It With Bennet Foddy. There are the odd teeth-grindingly frustrating levels that rely more on luck or perseverance than actual skill, but I'm awful at games and I still managed to completely 100% everything. Pro-tip: a couple of the levels involving crabs are pretty much technically impossible using the stoik/buttons but become very easy when you use the touchscreen because it's faster to 'charge up'. Other pro-tip: space out your sessions and don't just play it for hours on end because at it's core it is very similar throughout and you'll get utterly burned out on it that way.

People are bad at this. Really bad. So much so in normal multiplayer I regularly top the scoreboard with K/D ratios of 4-5. BR unlocked at level 10 and my squad won the first game I played – none of us died. All with 5-7 kills each.

1. Streets of Rage 4

Considering I wasn't all that keen on what I saw from the trailer, the final game is a pleasant surprise and after a few levels clicks as a proper SOR game. There are some frustrating enemies and some of the levels are a little unremarkable but there are enough neat new touches to make it a decent part of the series. Probably wouldn't have paid full price for it though.

2. Firewatch
Not a game I took to immediately, but very good once you get stuck into it. The lack of any actual risk of coming to harm takes a little getting used but, but I guess it's more a cross between a walking simulator and visual novel then the usual action games, so it was a nice Sunday diversion.

It's the first time I've played such a game, but I'd hoped for something a little less linear. The choices you make lead to small variations in the story, but still to the same end result.

I think most WS are linear by nature - they're telling a story. FireWatch is perhaps less linear than most I've played (which isn't that many).

Don’t play Dear Esther or Gone Home, if you think Firewatch is linear

But do play Gone Home because it's marvellous. Dear Esther I was a bit more "meh" about.

I won't be in a rush for another game in the same vein. I mainly bought it as it was on offer and some of the visuals were by the excellent Olly Moss

43. A Short Hike: short and sweet little exploration game in which your character attempts to hike up a mountain. This requires a number of 'feathers' which power up your jumping and climbing abilities so you need to explore the island you're on and do side-quests for characters to get feathers and cash. It's lovely and quirky and the various characters are all fun to interact with with fun quests (though most of them do boil down to 'find and thing and return/deliver it'), and what seems initially like a small world turns out to have a surprising amount of stuff to find and do. I didn't 100% it but I got the majority of the feathers--certainly enough to get me up to the snowy peak of the mountain--and did all the quests I came across (aside from the parkour race as that could get fucked) and enjoyed every minute of it. If that sounds like the kind of thing you'd enjoy then it comes highly recommended. And it's currently part of the Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality: https://itch.io/b/520/bundle-for-racial ... d-equality

44. The Spectrum Retreat: puzzle game where you 'pull' different coloured lights off of things so you can either walk through coloured doors or stand on coloured platforms. Has a framing devices of a virtual hotel staffed by robots that your character is trapped in. It's generally okay though uninspired stuff and the last set of levels has a couple of things that, to me, break the cardinal rules of such things* but I enjoyed it enough for it's six or so hour runtime.

*
  • One level requires you to move your character in mid-air after 'grappling' off a point so you can land on a specific platform. This technique is never introduced nor used ever again and as it's not any kind of proper platform game I honestly didn't even know you could do it until a video walkthrough gave me a clue.
  • One aspect of the very final level is only solvable by practically pixel hunting for the sliver of a far-off coloured block that you can just about sort of see from one very specific spot. Pure horseshit in this type of game.
  • The final level is very long by the standard of the game and the final room--which has a trivial solution--opens with a sheer blind drop to your death which forces a restart of the entire lengthy level. I very, very nearly gave up on it there and then but knowing I was like 30 seconds from the end of the game drove me to repeat all the shit the came before and then gingerly enter the final room as the developer had apparently intended you do.

26) Persona 4: The Golden (PS Vita) - 10/10

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney was a TV experience when it should have been a handheld experience. Persona 4 is a handheld experience that should have been viewed on the big screen. It’s a lengthy game (clear time 67 hours and 6 mins) but does still work well on handheld because the Vita is such a fabulous bit of kit. Man, I’ve missed the Vita. The buttons are nice (like the Switch but nicer), the sticks are good enough and I love the tactile nature of opening the Vita by peeling the screen saver off. The screen is so bright and lovely and the colours just pop. What a shame it’s dead.

Anyway, Persona 4. It’s held in high regard by some critics who consider it to be the best game ever made on the PS2. I disagree. Because I played it on the Vita, init. But it’s such a fantastic game - it’s just got bags of heart. The characters are all great (well, some less so than others ... Teddie) and the game lets you spend time with them, get to know them, fart around time with them and occasionally shag them. I played P5 first and haven’t played any of the earlier entries so it’s hard not to constantly compare what’s happening to P5. You can see how they refined and expanded the experience for P5 but for all intents and purposes it’s a streamlined version of the latter game. There’s less to do, fewer areas to see and the dungeons are, urgh, randomised in this version. Sure I prefer P5’s everything but what’s here is fantastic. The music is magnificent of course, the graphics are a bit basic but works on the Vita’s small screen; the rock, paper, scissors gameplay is the same as ever and the story is a bunch of anime nonsense but works.

I enjoy the combat for the most part but it’s the social aspects of the game that are so much fun and take up the majority of the game. I liked how the family you stay with are just nice people and don’t treat you like dirt like how you’re treated in P5. I loved the friends you make and how it’s all so lovely and wholesome. It made me laugh how the game isn’t afraid to just say fuck the dungeons, here’s a bunch of stuff about how you and your friends go on a skiing holiday or take part in a concert and have a fucking great time. I like how Kanji gets mad when Rise keeps calling him Moronji, how Yosuke is so positive, or Teddy is a massive pervert or how he gets into shit at the supermarket he works, or how it made me feel about the child, Nanako, and how my answers to dialogue were always in keeping with how I’d talk to a child I was fond of and treated like my own little sister.

Finishing Persona 4 made me sad like how you feel when you’ve finished reading a good book you’ve been invested for hours. It was so great and it’s finished and I’ll never be able to play it for the first time again.

Highly recommended.

Interesting. I loved Persona 4 for all the reasons you mention, but I very much found it to be a game best played on the Vita and it's one of the few games I've actually finished. I'm not sure it would have engrossed me as much on a big TV. The rock paper scissors battles felt like something that belonged on handheld, and I'm not sure they'd have been compelling enough on the big screen.

That said, I'm yet to try Persona 5, so there's a great opportunity to test the theory.

Can't believe you're down on Teddie, you monster.

45. Leaving Lyndow: a (very (very)) short narrative game which serves as a prequel to the developer's 'proper' game the exploration/paint 'em up 'Eastshade'. Leaving Lyndow looks nice and has a lovely atmosphere but at something like 40 minutes long it barely tells the ghost of a story before you're done. That said, it's only £2.79 at full price and I paid even less so I did arguably get my money's worth and it's done nothing to lessen my interest in Eastshade itself, which looks fucking lovely.

Mr Dave and I are currently playing Divinity: Original Sin. We found a statue that told us it could show us the future, so we asked it to prove it. So it rolled the game credits. Sorely tempted to count it as we’re maybe 30 hours in and haven’t made it out of Act 1 yet.

46. Miniature - The Puzzle Story: you're presented with a series of dioramas made up of five scenes that you flick through and examine so you can place them in the correct order to tell a story. A nice idea but the controls are fucking horrible (on the Switch anyway, I suspect the PC version would fare better here) so it's a bit of a chore to actually move around. Despite that it's incredibly easy and boring as shit.

It’s Star Fox with dragons and monsters and I’m getting this weird, sort of, Ueda-vibe from it. Something about was just very compelling to play. I was having a blast while also getting my dick kicked in. Wiki quotes some website and says “if you can beat it on normal difficulty, then consider yourself a true gamer," and that "it may turn off some with its difficulty". And that’s probably why I was having so much fun with it - the sheer spectacle but balls busting difficulty. There was just something terrifyingly great about having 50 mussels flying towards you at one time and picking them out of the air with a stream of finger hurry mashing of the fire button.

That last boss though, fuck me. You have to learn all the moves and dodge pretty much every single thing or you’re straight up fucked. You can spend minutes blasting away to just get one shotted by a single barrage and have to go back to the start. I was having a miserable time until I was suddenly a god and was ducking, weaving and blasting all the missiles out of the air without difficulty. It’s was kinda unfathomable.

Once it’s over there’s a bunch of other missions which I clocked too. They’re not very good to play unfortunately but confusingly the sub-story is better than the main game. They don’t last more than an hour all in.

And there’s the original game in here too, but it’s a bit uggo and there’s a remaster on the Switch which will probably be worth playing so I jacked it in.

The total clear time was only 7 hours so it’s kinda brief but it’s such a fun game I couldn’t help but love it. It’s on Game Pass and it’s gotta be a must play for any right minded individual.

47. UnpuzzlerR: sequel to excellent puzzle game 'Unpuzzle'. It's pretty much more of the same with a couple of new mechanics so I'll just quote what I said the first time around:

Quote:
Brilliant little puzzle game for Android that see yous taking a jigsaw puzzle apart. It starts off incredibly simply with just a few pieces to slide out from each other then steadily introduces new mechanics (pieces that are linked in various way, pieces that can only be taken apart in specific directions, pieces that spin, pieces that can be shifted around the board, etc) until you're at a point where someone looking at the board who hadn't played the game before would be utterly fucking baffled by the intricacy. Due to the smooth curve of new mechanics though you never notice this point arriving and it remains both interesting and captivating throughout. I was utterly, utterly addicted to this for the time it took to go through the generous number of levels and I'd highly recommend it.

And as with the first one it's available as a free browser game as well:

48. Moons of Madness: horror game inspired by Lovecraft's 'Mountains of Madness. Which gets a nice nod right at the beginning of the game when it's revealed that although your crew of scientists are on Mars, the secretive corporation they're working for has them maintain a cover story that they're actually in the Antartic, right down to using a green screen to film video updates. Aside from that it's just the usual 'eldritch horrors from the dimensions between' and whatnot.

It all starts off relatively strong with your character alone in a claustrophobic base with your only other human contact the radio chatter with people in other locations on Mars. There's some purposely mundane activity to set the scene and familiarise yourself with the controls and then Shenanigans Ensue, as you'd expect. It's not a bad game per se, it's just not brilliant at all the things it tries. The few jumps-scares don't land, the overall atmosphere never quite gets going because the rote gameplay hollows it all out, and while the plot has a couple of interesting beats it's too much of a mish-mash of stuff you've seen before to really stand out. Can't really recommend.

28) The Last of Us Part 2 (PS4) - 9/10

Boy, it’s long. I kinda wish I’d known about that before going in as my expectations as to where the story was going was completely fucked. Y’know when you watch a film you’ll get 90 mins or, more likely these days, 2 hours and a few minutes and it’ll be done. Or you read a book and look at the number of pages or the thickness of the book, you generally know what you’re getting. Or you buy a CoD game and you know you’ll get 4+ hours or a JRPG and you know it’s a 50 hours plus. Here, I think I’m at the end and I’m only half way through. Because of that the pacing felt off and it took me some time to readjust to the second half.

But the thing is, the second half probably has the most memorable set pieces and action. In the first half it’s all very familiar stuff gameplay-wise but in the second half it’s larger action sequences and really memorable sequences - skybridge is a technical feat and the descent through the skyscraper is fucking great. Even some of the story beats are great with your rescue (also a beautiful escape through a forest lit with torches in the rain) and then following your companions. There’s a utterly brilliant sniper section that has a fucking wicked ending that genuinely stunned me.

Then there’s the extended epilogue. I was thinking it was the game that never ends, but I was enjoying myself so much I couldn’t care less. And something that baffles me about the epilogue was that was the only time where helmets are introduced!? 5 minutes from the end and all of sudden the baddies realise they should protect themselves from arrows in the face. Mind you, they aren’t much protection from explosive arrows dumping your lunch over the pavement.

As to the story, I really enjoyed it.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Joel’s thoughtless murder sets off Abbey’s revenge. Abbey’s story is all about her living with herself after she gets her revenge. Obviously the revenge murder doesn’t lead to a resolution at all and she continues to get the nightmares of her dead dad, her singular motivation to get revenge had lead to the breakdown of her relationship with Ewan. It’s not until Ewan gets in trouble and wants to leave and Abbey helps some children does she stop having the nightmares and starts to find meaning in life.

Ellie’s story is all about getting her own revenge which inevitably leads her to go through all the things Abbey already has: it destroys her relationships, kills her friends and is ultimately empty. Although she does realise the latter right at the last minute.

It’s not the most original story but it’s presented extremely well. The voice actors and mo cap are all terrific and exciting.

Yeah, I didn’t like the knife fight at the end as Ellie just couldn’t let it lie which felt wrong at that stage but everything before and after it was great stuff.

It’s nothing that we haven’t seen or read before but it was still interesting and I enjoyed seeing play out. I felt sad after it had ended and wondered what would happen to Ellie from there. I hoped she would seek out Dinah.

I’ll tell you what I didn’t like so much: the Scars. Religious nutters who just live off the land based on a mysterious island. I just don’t believe people would go that mental after an apocalypse and the religious nutters have been done to death. Their design was great and I just loved the whistling, mind. It was just the story based on a large scale faction warfare; it was too grand for my tastes. I’d preferred something more low scale where the two sides weren’t two armies and one wasn’t obviously bad because they’re religious nutter who slash their members faces, but that’s by the by.

So yeah, it was extremely good but you’d best get your expectations in check before you go in because you’ll be playing for some 25 hours on the easy difficulties but it you play it like it’s supposed to be played on the hardest difficulty you’ll be with it for a good 30 hours (31 for me). I’d suggest you take a break after the first half of the story too.

A spectacular technical achievement and a worthy follow up.

6. Outer Wilds (PC) - bad ending and then good ending

I'm not sure I can put into words how much I enjoyed this, but I'll try. Absolutely one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. It's best to go into this as blindly as possible, but in the most vague terms it's a space exploration game in a solar system where something bad happens. Instead of dying you are sent back to the start and everything is exactly how it was the first time (except your ship's computer remembers places you've been and knowledge you've gained). Your job is to stop the disaster happening. Along the way you find out about a long-dead race of aliens who built all these structures and technology throughout the system.

It took me just under 30 hours to finish this and I was very proud I didn't look at a guide once, even when really stuck. I'm so glad I didn't because learning what happened and how to do certain things was really part of the fun. Even when you bash your head against a brick wall in one area there's always loads of other places to go. It's beautifully realised, has some fun gameplay mechanics, poignant at times and has a fantastic soundtrack. it absolutely rewards you for becoming more skilful at the game and amassing knowledge so you know how to proceed further. There are no areas locked away at the start because you need a new ability, it's all about knowledge and experience.

I would've paid full price for this, but at £13 it was an absolute steal. I recommend this in the strongest terms possible.
