Trying to avoid standing in a queue at the post office. I want to send my Dad a birthday card to the US. Can I just stick stamps on it (more than covering the cost), write airmail on the envelope and pop it in a post box.

Internet seems to say yes, but I can't find a post that isn't a few years old and there's nothing on the PO website.

@mr chonks?

How soon do you need to send it? I have airmail stickers here I could send you, if you need the actual sticker.

Yes, so long as it's the right amount. I do this a lot - I usually overpay slightly but at least I get to use interesting stamps.

Thanks Trooper, but I'm guessing it just needs to be makes in someway. I was more thinking about the stamps. :)

As long as the postage is enough it will be fine. And even if not it’d get held there and they’d ask him to pay the surcharge.

Thank you. I don't mind overpaying if it means I don't have to stand outside in a queue for an hour. Between social distancing and shorter opening hours a trip to the PO for one card is something I would rather not have to do right now.

Heh, that was my thinking. I'm happy to overpay to make sure though. :)

Help me Beexers, you're my only hope.

My granddaughter was sent this puzzle as part of her homework today. Maths isn't her strong point, and it's not mine either, really, as evidenced by my inability to solve this. I just can't see the pattern. Can anyone help find the missing number?

The first number in each row multiplied by the second and then add on both numbers and you end up with the third one

This broke my brain.

I asked my maths prone husband who came up with another interpretation, and it also works :blown:

His answer as he typed it below:

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
I used to hate doing these kinds of exercises at school; for me they were mostly reliant on guesswork and hoping you reached the correct "hidden" pattern in the numbers, more of a test of your tenacity than your problem solving skills. Anyway, for this one, I treated each row as a separate question, and tried to fill in any hidden blanks between those numbers. There's always a sequence in there somewhere, but it isn't always in the numbers printed on the puzzle.

I tested a few ideas to see if there were any relationships between the numbers in the first row that were repeated in the second row and so on. For the correct answer, I found that 7-1 equaled 6, and 3x2 equaled 6, so I penciled that in for Row 1:
Row 1: 3 [x 2 +] 1 = 7

Then, I tried the same for row 2. 34-4 equaled 30, and 6x5 equaled 30. The multiplier between the two rows increased by 3:
Row 2: 6 x 5 + 4 = 34

If you increase the multiplier again by 3, then the math works for the third row:
Row 3: 8 x 8 + 7 = 71

So we have a pattern that holds up. Apply it to row 4 and you get your answer:
Row 4: 9 x 11 + 8 = 107

The final answer in full:
Row 1: 3 | 1 | 7
Row 2: 6 | 4 | 34
Row 3: 8 | 7 | 71
Row 4: 9 | 8 | 107

Sheeeit. That means there are two correct answers.

I hated these things at school as well. I was never sure whether it was that I was mentally deficient, or that I'd been scarred by a sadistic male teacher that I had in my second year in junior school. His view was that if you failed at anything it was YOUR fault and he used to have blazing rants and sometimes physically punish kids, mainly by grabbing them violently while ranting. It got to the stage where I was refusing to go to school, saying I was ill, which I pretty much was, because I was terrified every day. My mum complained to the head master, who was very supportive and who eventually got rid of the teacher in question.

Even now, when faced with a puzzle like this, I get angry with myself if I'm not able to see or work out the solution, or even worse, don't understand it when it's shown to me.

I hate stuff like that because I am too lazy and feel it lacks elegance as a puzzle. Honest.

:(

Fortunately I never had an experience as awful as that, but I think my fear of getting something wrong at school translated into not being able to ask for help on things I didn't fully understand as a grown up, or being too scared to make suggestions if there was even a little bit of doubt my answer might not be spot on.

Took a while to undo that. Now I can't stop telling everyone how clever I am :insincere:

Yeah, puzzles like that are bunkum.

Worst is that there are two (possibly more) correct answers to this one, both with patterns that are easily describable - yet your kid's teacher is likely only expecting one, and if you give them the one they don't have it'll be marked wrong.

Start sending WhatsApp messages like
"I am having my lunch"
"I've finished job X"

And if she doesn't stop, a blast of messages like this

"I'm doing a massive poo."
"God it hurts so much"
"Why? Whhhy?!"

I read kisses in text messages as creepy smacks, which is awkward.

Especially when it's your father-in-law ?:|

It's 80. Add numbers in 1st & 3rd columns, and the middle column is then the number in the "tens" column.

If I remember my 20-years-ago maths properly, questions like this are certain to have multiple, correct answers. Possibly infinite correct answers.

I forgot; there was a time when she wanted us to call or mail our call dispatch team to tell them when we were starting our lunch breaks. This was probably because one or two engineers were taking the piss about their lunch breaks, but instead of speaking to the culprits, she did the usual incompetent manager thing of mailing ALL the engineeers and pissing off the ones who are playing by the rules.

I filled up on the 14th March.. The fuel light has just come on, I will fill up on Thursday I think.

Done about 400 miles, so the fuel efficiency is rubbish as only short trips.

Just exercises at the moment. Learning how to reverse strings and slice/splice arrays and such.

Good one. The Grimlet is also doing JS with https://www.codingame.com/ which has fun exercises but doesn't hold your hand at all, so you may need some Google-fu if you try it.

Also Beex needs a selective quote button if you're looking for real-world tasks ;)

That's more JavaScript than I've written all year! ;)

I think this is my favourite @fesshole confession to date.

"I once had to speak to Nigel Farage due to work & had access to his personal details. I made a note of them & have since signed him up for every piece of shit marketing campaign that I can"
