Decided our daughter was old enough for Gremlins (6 is okay, right?) so we watched that yesterday and she loved it. I was also surprised to spot a young but still permanently disappointed looking Mike from Breaking Bad as the sheriff's deputy.

Iron Man 3: I could watch Tony Stark all day. Also, it has guy from neighbours in it.

We watched Short Circuit 2 yesterday.

Four things:

- It looks incredibly budget
- It's odd seeing Michael McKean playing that role
- My children wept uncontrollably at Number 5's near-death battering. Perhaps that, combined with the sense of Corona-dread, was too much for them.
- I always thought the controversy around Ben's character was that he had an over the top, caricature of an Indian accent. I didn't realise until yesterday that he was actually a white dude (who used to go out with Michelle Pfeiffer*) who blacked up for the part. He was also most recently seen playing the crass PR guy in Succession.

*Unimportant trivia

Loved it. Second Irish film I have seen that just nails it.

We watched Knives Out (I had about 8 quid credit from Google for doing surveys, so figured I could buy it)

Really enjoyed it. Based on the posters, I thought it would be "period", but the period os present day. Very well made, well written and well acted silly film.

It was like Clue for the Grand Budapest Hotel generation.

I didn't know Top Gun was a Tony Scott film, but then I've not seen it either. I think I was put off it by a friend at school who knew every line of the script and would quote it all the time.

"Not to mention an extreme hardware fetish."

Yeah, way to miss the entire point of the film. That's like complaining about too many sex scenes in a porn film.

Top Gun is hilariously bad but the plane porn was off the charts.

The Iceman (Amazon).

I thought for ages it was a documentary, and I had already seen all of the ones about Kuklinski. However it was a movie.

It was a good movie, but far from the facts. Especially when I spent about a month studying him and that his version of events didn't line up with the movie really at all.

Watched RUNNING WITH THE DEVIL on Netflix last night, it's reviewed very badly but I gave it a go because Nic Cage and Laurence Fishburne. It's better than the reviews give it credit for but not by a massive amount.

DRUGS is the name of the game, some DRUGS have been arriving at their destination in Canada in an adulterated state and THE BOSS wants to know why, so he dispatches Nic Cage to track the drugs all the way from where they are grown as coca leave thingies, right the way to the streets. Laurence Fisburne is Nic's associate and there is INTRIGUE and stuff and DEA agents and the way it tracks the drugs right the way through the production line is effective.

Also features decent amounts of violence and hookers and general debauchery, and it occasionally has flashes of a much better film but ultimately is average at best. There's a really good scene where Laurence is getting properly out of his tree and you see his swirling head in the foreground whilst he gets up to all sorts of naughtiness with hookers and drugs on a sort of fast forward in the background.

Oh yes and there's a decent part for that crazy guy out of Friends, the one who played Eddie, Joey and Chandler's roommate, he's good in it. Adam Goldberg, that's the fella.

It's on Netflix, worth a watch if you're uninspired and have an hour and a half to kill.

510/1000

I can recommend another splendidly nightmarish addition to the Mother / Mandy / Midsommer / Colour Out of Space list of WTF movies...and that is "In Fabric". The trailer really doesn't do it justice, it is as if Thomas Ligotti wrote an extended episode of Are You Being Served and it was then co-directed by Argento and Lynch. Excellent.

Thor the Dark World: trim about twenty minutes of fat and it would be really, really, good. That said, worth it for the underground scene alone. Strong supporting cast carry it well. Fairly sure Hemsworth wears a wig

I watched this last night, I wish I'd known that it was as much a dark comedy as anything else, before starting, as it took a while for the tone to settle with me.

Certainly a strange and hypnotic experience, (visually and aurally arresting, for sure), and there just aren't enough menstruating mannequin masturbation sequences in films these days.

I'm thinking around 750/1000 to 800/1000, but I think I need to watch it again.

Extraction (the new Netflix film) was probably pitched as “John Wick meets Michael Bay milsim”.

The John Wick set pieces at the front end are very good.

The saccharine Michael Bay milsim at the back end is terrible. The bad guy is awful and is introduced in the most generic way possible. And there’s some really noticeable ropey CG effects.

I was enjoying it until I wasn’t: 6/10

I watched “Beastie Boys Story”. It’s the recording of the live show the remaining boys have been doing. And it’s great. It goes through their history, their ups and downs and the passing of MCA to cancer. If you’ve even got a slight interest in the band you’ll find it interesting and heartfelt.

Bad Boys 4 Life

45 minutes before we get a shoot out. Why are they wasting my time like this? Back in the 90’s that 45 minutes would be like 10/15 minutes. This film is as bloated as Martin Lawrence looks.

This motorcycle chase has all the visceral thrills of a tax return.

Every single time the good guys special team shows up they suck all the fun out of the film. They’re so goddamn dry.

And the action is so far so bland. Nothing says bombastic action film like watching Will Smith look at computer monitors.

Thankfully, it’s over. The “story” was... laughably bad.

Y’know a friend of mine went to see it at the cinema twice. Twice!? He said it was “really good” and “much better than the trailer”.

He’s a filthy liar.

Exactly the same reaction as Kermode had - he didn't think anything of it, but noticed other people enjoying it. Watch it drunk, I reckon.

Just found the scene that made me notice this on YouTube (first 2 1/2 mins). It doesn’t seem half as bad watching it on my small phone screen but when you watch it on a big screen it’s really distracting.

Also it’s got a spoiler in the title so be careful, aye.

Also, I just watched the newest Turtles 2. I recorded it when it was on Channel 4, the other day. I didn't expect very much, and I didn't get a heck of a lot, but it was fun. Kept my attention for the duration, the effects (especially sound) were good. And it had Sheamus in it!

I love the turtles, and I love the movies, because they just make noise and blow up and I'm down with that.

Also Raph is a fucking monster which is great, and he's voiced by Thad Castle.
