I gave up on it half way through series 3 as well. When the script makes the characters behave really dumb as a plot mechanism is usually a deal breaker for me, and this did this a lot.

You must have hated Bottom.

Joking aside, that tends to be a deal breaker for me too.

Completely unrelatedly, I finished S4 of the expanse at the weekend. Fucking brilliant television. The episodes in the structure are immense. Creepingly claustrophobic and unpleasant.

Was less interested in the happenings on Mars, but obviously necessary for the longer term plot.

Interesting. I got an episode and a half into s4 and found it sluggish and flabby, and very different in style to the previous serieseses. I'll give it another go, although now I've got Altered Carbon, Better Call Saul and The Rookie to get on with.

It did take a few episodes for me to get into this series, and all your comments resonate. I'd definitely stick with it.

Agreed, the first few episodes of Expanse S4 are a little slow. But then anyone who has got this far has made it through S1 where nothing at all happens for six episodes.

World building!

I loved S4, the pacing of the show is part of the appeal for me.

The first series looked amazing, but fuck me was it slow. 10 hours to do the first half of the first book.
Plodding through S4 myself and I’m not finding it very compelling, if I’m honest, regularly failing to get through a complete episode in one sitting...

Riverdale questions:

Where does the toilet in the sex bunker drain to?

Why isn't the secret sex bunker not been "discovered" as there must be a pretty worn path to it by now?

Why does everyone suffer amnesia all the time?

Because it's good fun.

In other news, Amazing Stories on Apple TV+ had a good first episode.

But HOW MANY episodes? It's basically the size of the west wing and I can't think of one good reason for it being so mammoth.

That said, worth seeing through?

I've perservered with this. I've not watched an X of the week show for years and it turns out it's exactly what the commute needs.

Penguin is surprisingly excellent, and no-nonsense Alfred is also a highlight. The whole thing looks the part. Will see if I hit the series 3 itch others encountered.

I also started watching The Last Ship on my friend's advisement. Turns out now is not the time to start watching a show where 80% of the world's population have been infected by a deadly virus.

I oddly like it. But that's probably because it has Jayne and a couple of lovely ladies.

One of my all time favourite exchanges in Firefly is when Jayne is offering to swap his favourite gun with Mal for his unwanted wife.

[Jayne is walking menacingly towards Mal with a large gun]
Jayne : Six men came to kill me one time. And the best of 'em carried this. It's a Callahan full-bore auto-lock. Customized trigger, double cartridge thorough gauge. It is my very favorite gun.
[he holds the gun out to Mal]
Mal : [exclaims in Chinese] You offering me a trade?
Jayne : A trade? Hell, it's theft. This the best gun made by man. It has *extreme* sentimental value. It's miles more worthy 'n what you got!
Mal : What I got? She has a name.
Jayne : So does this. I call it Vera.
Mal : Well, my days of not takin' ya seriously are certainly comin' to a middle.

Characters being arseholes and actors doing the same is somewhat different. Character personality traits don’t affect real peoples’ lives.

I would watch a TV show with someone behaving like Donald Trump and be able to enjoy it. I can’t watch Donald Trump and enjoy it.

If someone is an amazing actor I can get over some flaws in their personality. Adam Baldwin is not an amazing actor.

On the same track though, why should an actor's real personality affect your enjoyment of their fictional work? I could understand not wanting to watch, say Kevin Spacey, but Baldwin isn't a rapist, right?

Is it just actors? What about, for example, stuff produced by Weinstein? That's a whole lot of the last 30 years taken out of the library.

He called people offended by the n-word “intellectual weaklings”, which makes him racist. That’s enough for me.

Let's hope the person that cures COVID-19 doesn't punch dogs or something.

In other news, I thought Kramer in Seinfeld was a twat because real Kramer got all racist while doing standup. Spacey I can easily watch, though.

What an absolute load of rubbish.

Much better was the Big Show Show. It's naff, but in a good way.

I was 200% sold on Tiger King before even the first title rolls. It's absolute madness, yet coupled with real horror.

Also, a tiger is only $2k!

Finished Ozark S3 last night. That's a show that's improved with every series.

The characters have become so much deeper, and Jason Bateman has pulled an (admittedly less) incredible (but 500% subtler) Walter White. He does an immense job of being completely absent and emotionally disconnected in any interaction. The cogs are always whirring, but he's always inscrutable and implacable.

Also, I want to live in the Ozarks.

Soundtrack is ace too.

So, has anyone else watched "Devs"? Just finished the last episode, excellent stuff (to explain what it is beyond 'shady Tech firm are up to secret stuff' would spoil it)...Alex Garland is really creating some good stuff.

Thoroughly enjoying The Rookie, but the final episode of season 1 - with the threat of an airborne ebola-type virus - was a bit near the mark. It was also hard to believe, given where we are now, how other officers kept rushing towards infected or potentially infected people, which gave me a wry grin or two.

I’ve been binge watching a few custom car / restoration programmes on Netflix, Rust to Riches where Gotham Garage(s) trade up from one finished custom car to get another more expensive project going (2 seasons) and Rust Valley restorers where the guys have a whole field full of old classics they cherry pick to bring back to life. Both shows are full of passionate motor heads and they take great pride in both pleasing clients and putting out their best work. With both shows consumed I tried West Coast Customs... what a contrast... the boss is a fucking twat with zero charisma who constantly moans at his staff often threatening their jobs. The cars projects are only for corporate clients for trade shows that have no personality just a shitty advert really (ep1 was an armoured car full of xboxes & playstations for Richard Branson* to launch Virgin Gaming at E3. ep2 was a souped up Hummer for Alienware...). Shite.

*cunt

Now watching and enjoying Fastest car (sleepers vs super cars) and Hyperdrive (nice motors competing on Drifty Brum brum course(s) ).

I liked A 4x4 Is Born although that may have more to do with my specialist interest. And, of course, any Guy Martin show is a winner.
