Is the central locking sluggish. Does the ignition click and the starter motor half rotate? In which case it’s the battery probably. If you turn the ignition and you can put lights, fans, wipers on, then it’s more likely to be the starter motor. Hit it with a mallet

I have acquired jump leads. What will a jump start prove?

I have also acquired a mobile mechanic for tomorrow afternoon.

I'll head out and do some testing after the "working" day is done. Thanks for the tips

Not a great deal, but it might get you a running car.

I reckon it's battery, considering it's been sitting for a while.

Also, do a quick google search on jump starting cars, as you can fry fuses or worse sometimes, if you do it wrong.

What happened? I've always just jump started cars with little regard and gotten away with it...

If you have too little regard and get you + and - mixed up, bad things occur.

To be honest, I can't remember but it involved waiting around for the AA.

I dropped a spanner across battery terminals once. Makes you realise how much energy is stored in there. (It welded itself on in an impressive shower of sparks that left bright splotches on my vision for ages.)

With a fucking big pry bar. Probably got lucky, it hadn't made very direct contact so wasn't that solidly affixed.

Didn’t that completely bork the battery?

I’m sure most of the time nothing will happen if you connect to correct terminals. It’s more that modern cars are complex electronically and you can fry expensive bits of circuitry if you’re unlucky. Last time I looked, the recommendation was to run heaters, lights, radio, engine etc on the healthy car, and connect the negative clip on the receiving car to a metal part of the engine bay, not the terminal.

Yeah, my jump starter battery thingy says there is a "risk of explosion" if you connect the negative lead to the terminal.

In theory, but it still held juice and all my cars then were so cheap it wasn't even on the top 10 list of most previously broken bits.

Only due to sparks, though.

Charging batteries have a habit of exploding though, they release... A Gas when charging then when you disconnect the leads there's sparks then bang! It happened to a guy I worked with, but he was a twat so I didn't care.

The ER5 had a knackered reg/rec and it was chucking too much power into the battery or something which caused the casing to swell. Cost a fortune to get that diagnosed and.fixed.

I think I knackered it riding through deep floodwater.

I've given my old 3L V6 to a mate who's going to try to jam it into his mgb.

Will it fit?

It, uh, might. It might end up a press fit engine.

That sounds too simple. I suggest taking off and dropping it from orbit.

He took the sump off today and found 1 small screw and a lot of broken plastic. I've told him this is completely fine, no metal in there. No idea how all the plastic got in though, must be part of the breather system or something.

I mean, yes I'm careful to connect to the appropriate terminal (or sometimes the bit of the body that the negative terminal is connected to, if that's easier to reach), and not to let the clips touch each other, but other than that I never remember which order to put them on and take them off and while I've heard about running the fans and that I've never bothered.

The bag the jump leads came in has a warning about cars with electronic control systems (but that's pretty much all cars innit?). Are they just being cagey with their disclaimers in case of those rare/unlucky events?

Negative first, less likely to clatter the body with a positively charged spanner.

I tend to do - first, but also try not to throw live terminals around.

My least favourite time of year, getting the Fusion through its MOT.

It needed four new tyres, but I knew that anyway, so was prepared for the extra cost. Cam belt was overdue for replacement so that’s been done as well, and the water pump. Other than advisories for a bit of sill corrosion, it’s been given the all clear.

Only bad news is that insurance has gone up from £24 to £25 per month. I guess I’ll take the hit on that rather than shopping around for a cheaper deal.

I think there is a six month allowance now, so you won't get in trouble. But many garages are still doing services, MOTs and repairs if only to keep keyworkers able to get safely to work.

I just popped out and the roads were so empty I had to use my cruise control to stop myself from speeding.

That’s right, but does hat mean that all subsequent dates will be pushed back? The uk.gov website doesn’t make this clear. I needed the service and other work anyway, so it was convenient to do the MOT at the same time.

Good question, I would expect so. Even if you have your MOT/service done six months later, you won't need it doing again 6months after that. (YMMV)

Remembered I had a bag of assorted LED bulbs and just had the right type/amount to switch out my interior lights in the Auris.
