I was reading it's fatal for 1 in 10000 for under 20s, and 1 in 6 for over 80s which is quite the concern.

Well that's made me feel much better. Thank you.

Seriously though, I gave her a right ticking off over the phone. Hopefully she'll get it but I'll speak to my brother later and tell him to tell her the same.

I have parents in the same age group, both with "health conditions". One of them will be sensible and the other definitely won't.

#notalloldpeople

My folks are in their late 70s (with underlying health conditions), and did as they were told straight away. They've pissed off my idiot brother and his ghastly partner by refusing to look after their kids any more. She's now moaning about having to take time off work to look after her own kids.

My father and mother-in-law are both staying in their house or just going out into their garden, no trips any further afield than that. I've been doing their shopping and taking it up to them for a few days now. My mother-in-law in particular is right in the firing line for this, she's 84, diabetic, other health issues, on loads of different medications etc. Yes of course everyone's got to go some time but it'd be nice if it weren't this that takes her out.

The supermarkets here have been OK since rationing was introduced, most things are available without too much trouble although there are quite a few empty spaces on the shelves. There was plenty of toilet paper when I went earlier today but that's been limited to one item per customer now thanks to selfish fucking panic buying hoarding fucking idiots.

I'm not sure how this social distancing is supposed to work in busy supermarkets and suchlike though, we've kind of accepted that we might end up catching it, our main priority is to make sure that neither my father or mother-in-law catch it.

What about 40 year old men? Asking for a friend.

Current published global data is 0.2% for 30-39 and 0.4% for 40-49.

Although, and I need to dig out the reference to the paper Ruth was looking at for work, some reassessment of the fatality rate from Wuhan has suggested the overall fatality rate might actually be closer to 0.15% rather than 3.5%. There are a lot of people who have had it with little to no symptoms ... so serological testing of as many people as possible to see who's had it and get a more accurate assessment of the actual fatality rate is bloody critical.

It would be a really good one. Flu-like symptoms so lots of people could get them, and just say "X number of people have died" and watch the whole world go fucking crazy.

My brother in law has messaged my wife asking if she would teach his kids on a Thursday and Friday while they're not at school. He thinks that they're going to be left behind as the kids at school will be carrying on with the curriculum... which they most certainly won't be! The school that are accommodating kids are purely doing it on a child care basis.

He finished up by quoting some comments from the Daily Mail.. That went down well as you can imagine.

Yup it's absolutely stupid.

I am glad that Butlins has closed down (here, Bognor) as that is where our flu usually ships in from (London Victoria).

Can't believe people were flooding to The Witterings though. It's so bad in the summer you can't get in, yet the asshats seemed to be doing it today in some sort of idiotic fucking defiance.

Reasonably confident I have indeed contracted COVID-19. Got five of the most common symptoms, and was in close contact with someone on Monday at my new job who had symptoms by Wednesday. I'm not in an at risk group, and was already self isolating prior to these symptoms.

I'm following the medical advice, and fortunately able to work from home. In the words of Chet Haze: I'm not tripping.

13 years working from home, no major incidents.
1 day working in an office, CORONA VIRUS.

IOM Government press conference just finished.

We're closing our borders tomorrow, if you don't live here, you can't come in, and even then you have to self-isolate for 14 days.

Pubs, restaurants, gyms all have to close as of midnight tonight.

Schools closing tomorrow.

First confirmed case of human-to-human transmission on the island confirmed (not someone coming in with it).

Advice is 'don't leave the house unless you have to', and that is 'open to review', the implication seems to be a full lockdown if people act like silly twats.

Crikey.

Some guy got arrested on the IOM last week and forced into isolation for 14 days. Not sure if you saw that. Pubs closed here on Friday.

Are countries going to stay close until their cases drop, or until there is a vaccine, or some other time? They've already seen people being infected in China by people coming back the country.

How long is this going to go on for? I hope that this will lead to a change in taking sick leave and being entitled to sick pay in future. That it'll become mandatory to stay away if you're sick, even after Coronavirus goes away.

Until there’s a vaccine, it could be coming and going with restrictions to match for a year or more.

I'm beginning to think similar, having found myself living with my mother again after 31 years in London and a relationship breakup. Like you, I can't get infected. I am thinking that moving out, getting it inevitably, isolating and then having the hopeful immunity might be a plan. Because being isolated for >12 months isn't attractive or feasible.

It seems that everybody either has symptoms, or knows somebody that does. The official numbers are 5500 infected...

No idea of it being more prevalent is a good or bad thing though.

I think it's a good thing - (a) it means the fatality rate is a lot lower when you take the likely thousands of people who have it with mild or no symptoms into account and (b) everyone is going to get this sometime. A vaccine is still looking unlikely, so it's more likely this becomes endemic like regular flu and swine flu now is.
PHE should be stepping up testing, and also putting in place plans for testing the general population in a few weeks/months so they can see how many people have had it.
An "I've had coronavirus" card will become a thing, akin to a Willy Wonka's Golden Ticket.

Easily half of my (non-beex) online friends group has it. One of them was in quite a bad way, the rest less so. The numbers are utterly bullshit.

The thing is, without testing _everyone_, you can't get any idea of the real numbers. Bob could be symptom free and have it, Dave could have very mild symptoms and might have it, might not and Karen could be suffering loads of symptoms but have regular flu or that bastard of a bug that was going around at Chrimbo.

We won’t know true numbers until after the fact. Even then there will be plenty who had symptoms so mild it won’t even be registered.

Indeed, but if we're not even testing suspected cases, I don't see how the numbers can be even close to useful. The only one I'm paying any attention to at the minute is fatality rate, which is somewhat depressing.

Do bear in mind exactly what the fatality rate they're giving here is: people who have died who have it, not people who have died as a consequence of having it.partially as due to lack of knowledge meaning it's hard to differentiate the two.

Well, yes, I think what they need to do is roll out a test now to ascertain who has had it, as per the interview with Larry Brilliant on Wired.

Also, another important confounding factor is the availability of medical care. There's an underlying "mortality rate with unlimited care", but there's also a (considerably higher) rate of "mortality if no care is available." We're current somewhere near the first of those, but if the NHS is overwhelmed, we'll move towards the second.

Our friends Sarah and Ed have had it (a few of you have met them.) Ed had a nasty fever that knocked him flat for most of last week. That's the closest it's come to us so far. But it's still very, very early days.

Gillian, my ex, has it. Knocked out and in bed running a nasty fever and a cough. And she's still on drugs for post breast cancer treatment.

And have Trooper and Lewie actually had it confirmed? Could’ve been a normal flu strain or some other virus. This is the problem without testing.

Of the people I know who have it, most have recently returned from trips abroad or have been in contact with someone who has.

If someone gets run over by a bus they won't get tested for covid-19 and included in the figures, it's mostly going to be people who are suffering with symptoms closely associated with it. I don't think there's going to be masses who are positive for the virus but were going to die of pneumonia that day anyway.

True, but surely due to the highly contagious nature of Covid-19 (way over what 'flu is), it's statistically more likely they have had it than not.
Again, a test for people which shows who has had it is also vital.
