Can you still make explosive arrows by equipping bombs & arrows and pressing the buttons simultaneously? On the OG Gameboy I was never sure if that was an intended feature or a glitch. Oh, and my little sister somehow managed to find a way to steal from the village shop, it felt like a real secret discovery.

I very much enjoyed Link's Awakening but remember getting stuck in the dungeon that had the ice blocks. I couldn't find the fire-rod and, it being pre-internet days, not being able to easily find a guide. My Friend at school (David Tucker) said he had one in a Nintendo magazine but never brought it in for me to see. Suck a fat one, David Tucker mother-fucker.

The graphics are lovely but there’s some frame rate issues in some areas - bit weird for a Nintendo game to be honest. The music is alright in that typical twee fashion which suits the new aesthetic but it lacks that Nintendo goodness that they’re known for.
Anyway, I’m really enjoying it and it’s cute and stuff if you’re into that. If you like Nintendo games you’ll probably know if you’ll be spaffing into your pants at a tiny cute Link. I just need a bit more I think.

Did you update it? i thought they had resolved most frame rate issues..

btw the videos i saw looked like 1 on 1 to the OG.. I bought the DX version via Virtual console on the 3ds .. played it for a few hours but got bore.. not really a zelda person i guess..
got wind waker free for the WiiU but never really got into it..

I’m sure it’s updated - it would keep harassing me otherwise. Not that I ever turn it on or off and save the game: sleep mode is too good!

Here’s a brilliant looking game by the way.

Enter the Gungeon is fantastic and this looks to replicate it on a 2D plane.

It’s the remake of the 1993 Gameboy OG. I never played the original so I can’t comment on the accuracy but having looked at a couple of videos on YouTube it’s very similar but has some QoL changes.

The graphics are lovely but there’s some frame rate issues in some areas - bit weird for a Nintendo game to be honest. The music is alright in that typical twee fashion which suits the new aesthetic but it lacks that Nintendo goodness that they’re known for.

The game itself is just ... very nice. It’s pleasant. It’s enjoyable. It’s not exactly taxing, mind. It’s just a very pleasant enjoyable relaxing walk in the park, I guess. I’m about 70% through it, I think, and I’ve got the whole map unlocked. There’s some annoyances - there’s some changing weapons around when there’s a few redundant buttons on the pad not being used. I mean, come on, you only get two empty slots for abilities and weapons and I have to choose if I want to jump!? I basically always had “jump” filling one of the two slots and switched between the others. Just irritating really. Those frame rate issues are a minor annoyance too. Some of the boss fights are irritating since they don’t telegraph how to kill them. I went through all my weapons trying to kill this bull guy when I only needed to charge up my sword move which I hadn’t done in fucking hours and hours of playing the thing. And the thing is, a charge move has never worked with ANY other enemy that possesses a shield - so it’s a break in the game logic - nor does the enemy do anything to suggest that I needed a charge attack. Also, the dungeons are mainly just blocks of rooms stitched together which is a bit disappointing, and there’s a guy who will let you make your own dungeon and you just bash a load of blocks together and BOOM you’ve done the job of the devs.

Anyway, I’m really enjoying it and it’s cute and stuff if you’re into that. If you like Nintendo games you’ll probably know if you’ll be spaffing into your pants at a tiny cute Link. I just need a bit more I think.

Y’know what’s bugging me about this game? There’s far too many random staircase entries that are just hidden under some innocuous thing with no indication that there might be an, often important and needed to actually fucking progress, staircase. Like, you slash a bush (because you’ll be slashing a load of foliage because reasons) and there’s a hidden staircase below it. Why not have a shine or some rustle or something that might give it away? Seems really stupid and crap to me.

I didn't really play the original much, but this was pretty much how it used to be on the first game on the NES, set fire to a random bush because there might be a staircase underneath. Bonus, as the candle you had for most of the game could only be used once per screen, you had to go out the screen, come back in, remember which tree you wanted to try next, and repeat. I think it was all secret stuff on the first play through, but the second hid some level entrances that way.

I remember digging up every single piece of the 'diggable' ground around the castle, even after I'd found what I needed. This was when I was young and simply enjoyed whiling away the time.

Nah, some dungeons were hidden on th first play through too.
There were hints (in badly translated text), although I'm not sure whether those were hidden too. I'd imagine not.

Doom 64 is out today for the Switch and it's only £3.99. I've had a quick go on it and it's great. Not like any Doom around at the time as it was made especially for the N64 but it's still familiar Doom.

Doom.

So, Switch ordered. Should be here within a week and a half, fingers crossed. What games are bestest? I do rather like strategy, Phoenix Wright type things, exploration, Stardew Valley japes (got my Animal Crossing with it) and decent shooters. The only thing I'm rubbish at is pixel perfect platforming. I've never been great at all with the 2D Mario games, though I admire them I'm a frustrated klutz playing them... but maybe the 3D ones are easier?

How can I buy a game from the US eShop from the UK?

I have created a US-region Nintendo account, added it to my Switch and linked the console up, but I can't buy the game as it says I need to use a payment card that was issued in the US.

I would just buy a eShop credit code or something, but the game I want is only 1 cent so it'd just end up with a massive amount left unused.

Basically thats it - buy an eshop credit code and yes you'll have lots unused but there are often games at less than $1 - I've tried many international cards and ones that would bill in dollars but it seems that it needs to be a US card and registered to a US address.

For e-shop cards I've used this place in the past https://www.pcgamesupply.com/ - a $10 us card on there is currently £8.75

The other way i've grabbed stuff recently was by using Target - they often have games at the same price (and with the same discounts as the US Eshop) and they take normal credit cards

Does not help with the 2c games but if you see something you want on there then its worth checking (i picked up cuphead for $9 from them)

**

More US games at a few pence if you do go down the card route :

What's the best wireless controller for the switch? All of my joycons seem to be suffering from drift these days and it's driving me bloody bonkers.

I love the official pro one, but there are some decent third-party ones too if you don’t want to pay for it.

I've not used any wireless ones but most people seem to recommend the official one (but its £60)

I do have a wired one with a really long cable though and will sometimes use that sitting on the couch to play
If that would work for you Argos sell them for about £15 - £20

I don't mind paying for it as long as it's going to still work in 3 months time and not send my little animal crossing person to the wrong side of the island when I'm not looking >:(

Yeah, a good size cable would also be okay. Cheers, will take a look.

The official ones say they have an 8ft cable (so 2.5 meters) -

For Gamecube-style controllers, I'm quite tempted to get the Princess Peach version as they're only £18 at the moment. I'd prefer the Luigi version, but they're £25.

I have the Nintendo official pro wireless pad. I second the “it’s not cheap but it is nice” sentiments.

I'm all for the official wireless Pro pad. It's brilliant. One of the nicest pads I've ever used.
