7 is good, yes, but 6 is better.

8 was utterly tedious, haven't played 9, 10 was utterly tedious, 12 I'm currently playing and trying to get into, not sure if it's boring or not yet.

I don't thinik it's the levelling up that's the problem, seeing as 'new' 2d castlevania games are possibly the best thing in the universe. It's the turn based combat - whether you can see the enemies coming or not, it's tedious. And yet I play them.

Dragon Quest 8 was lovely. Want more.

Someone mentioned Vandal Hearts earlier in the thread - now that was an awesome RPG that came out around the same time as FF7 and that was turn based. I'd love to give that a go again, I loved how you could plan your moves turns in advance, it really made you think.

FFVII let me count the ways I hate ye.

Teeth grindingly bad story full of really childish self absorbed emo characters that only an emotionally immature dufus could engage with. That by itself would be excusable, but it's the smugness of the game that I find totally intolerable - the self assuredness that it is such masterpiece that it is alright for it to brag about taking an enormous chunk of your life. Whaddya mean you want to play and move? No, we know best, you have to sit there and have 50 random battles because we've worked so hard on the graphics and materia that it's only fair that you should invest 50 hours of your free time playing this. Anybody who says it's a masterpiece must have a monumentally high boredom threshold and the sense of dedication only to be admired in a sheep. Or they think drooling and breathing through their mouth is normal.

So, pathetic, moronic, shallow bullshit characters.
Patronising
Condescending
Shit story
Too long
Too slow
About 20,000 more random battles than would be acceptable.
The combat system

For me it was the tipping point where I stopped playing JRPGs because though I had enjoyed several before then, it was the smug assertion by the developers that this was the best game ever, where as far as I was concerned it was just the biggest, and by making it the biggest they had concentrated on the cheap shit to make it bigger. Bloated shit story, unforgivable random battles every minute that you knew were there simply to make the game longer and really annoying dicks for characters. I'd rather have my balls tattooed.

That's like willingly spending time with someone you don't like because you're too polite to tell them to fuck off and stop wasting your time.

Nine. And a number of the earlier ones.

Nine was the best one, and I don't care what anyone else says.

Disclaimer: I may not have played 1-6.
Or 8
Or X-2
Or 11 onwards
Or any of the spin-off games.
But it was better than 7 or 10.

I think you spent way too much time reading about the game beforehand, DB.

I'd guess you probably really, really dislike Fable for the same reason, when there's plenty of other, more appropriate reasons to do so.

I don't recall reading that much about FFVII beforehand, other than everybody saying it was awesome. I think I enjoyed it not very much for the first few hours which is de rigeur for most rpgs, but it just got worse to the point where I simply didn't give a fuck about any of the characters as they were all annoying emo fuckwits spouting cretinous portentous bollocks with millions of random battles thrown in. It was a chore, which is the antithesis of what a game should be really.

And, I actually didn't mind Fable.

I think my main problem with FFVII, as I stated numerous times, was it's assuredness that it was worthwhile you wasting all that time on it, when it was in fact a deeply mediocre bloated piece of pompous hubristic shit. It would have be more tolerable without the bloat. Hell knows there are very few awesome game stories out there, but the fact that there are NO stories out there that can withstand being dragged out over >50 hours seems to have escaped Square. No amount of production values can mask that, IMO.

Don't get me started on Metal Gear though ;)

i still have to find an asian game with good story and dialogues. Same about asian movies (Oldboy was probably the exception, but even with the intriguing story the dialogues weren't that good).

it seems while they're good with technologies and numbers, they're bad at exploring emotions

Of course, given that more than twice as many poll respondents think it was good than think it wasn't, it's probably fair to say that the majority think that is was worthwhile spending all that time on it - hence any self-assuredness (?) on the game's part was probably quite justified.

Yes, it had it's flaws, but saying that what must be the most popular CRPG of all time is a deeply mediocre bloated piece of pompous hubristic shit is...well....a little pompous and hubristic.

No, we're at the "It's hugely popular both here (where people would normally be accredited with discernment) and in the wider world, so to dismiss it as shit, rather than just saying you don't like it, is a little much".

Not liking the game is one thing. Dismissing it is something else, something that is frankly silly.

I don't think I was dismissive. To me that implies indifference. I formed an opinion from trying on two separate occasions to play the game. It IS pompous, hubristic and basically an enormously trite piece of shit and I fail to understand why anybody would play it and enjoy unless they were a student or kid with more time than they knew how to fill usefully or no money to go out. It's horses for courses.

Also, feel free to call me pompous and hubristic.

I love the game but yes the random battles got annoying.

But it was less the battles, and more the 5 or so seconds between entering a random battle and starting fighting. And the similar bit at the end.

I found that more frustrating in FFVIII, especially the delay before and after the card battles too. I'd probably play it again if they could eliminate the loading on it.

The awesome thing about FF8 is that within about.... 2 hours of playing you can have enc-none and then never have to do random battles for the rest of the game :)

But which prevents you from levelling much. Which doesn't matter due to the how the game works but which ruins the fun of customizing your characters, which is annoying.

Of course, the very presence of stuff like enc-half and enc-non is the best argument for the developers knowing the random battles suck.

But don't forget there's usually an Encounter plus as well. So surely that's the best argument for the developers knowing there aren't enough random battles?

Except of course for the many demostratable reasons why it's shit.

It's not RPG snobbery, there's plenty of good RPGs even though I'm not a fan of the genre. FF7 is fundamentally broken in many ways and the poster child for hype ruining people's rational senses.

Wild horses, tractors, alluring naked females and offers of large quantities of dosh probably wouldn't be enough to get me back. My time is even more selective nowadays to the point where I don't really play RPGs of any description.

Just because you're wrong doesn't mean you have to call the people that are right 'kids'. Or, worse, 'student'.

But most of the people on this forum who were playing it when it came out would have been one or the other, no?

Yes indeed, but I played it last week on my PSP, and it was still great.
I suspect the only reason it's not on PSN is because they are going to do a HD version or something.

If you wanted something boring and portable I could have loaned you my copy of DrG's dissertation.
