Oh, a proper shutdown of the PS4 instead of using sleep mode, and now the voices are working.

Having just finished God of war after a year long break from it, I've returned to Doom, which I was only a few hours into.

At the time it hadn't clicked. In hindsight it suffered from the same issues as GoW. Too many bits of your character to upgrade. Was asking me to do too much RPG guff when really I just wanted an arcade experience.

However, I'm in a groove now I've unlocked the scanner perk in my praetor suit, rooting out the drones, praetoers and runes. The rune challenges are surprisingly fun and tricky enough to make you need to refine an approach, without being too frustrating. Not sure how far through I am, but can imagine playing it again on a slightly harder setting (think I'm on hurt me plenty.)

So, nu Doom is good. You heard it here first.

Very zeitgeisty there, Mr Fop.

If you can tolerate NIGHTMARE, then I'd very much recommend playing through the game on that skill level, it's quite one of the purest, most insanely satisfying gaming experiences I've ever had.

Obviously you're going to die. A lot. But when a section clicks and you get it right, it's like discovering for the first time that your willy is for more than just weeing.

I'll tell you something for nothing, and it may be a touch unpopular. But playing this directly after God of War, the glory kills in this feel remarkably weightless compared to God of War's.

Probably to do with the pace Doom needs to move at, but the grisly kills like the sense of heft that GoW's do.

Doom! Still playing it!

I've been mooching around hell a couple of hours and I like the setting a lot - which is slightly perverse as it was my lesser preferred environment in OG Doom.

Just got my hands on the Super Shotgun, which is obviously pretty spiffy once you upgrade its reload time. Though I'm missing the glory kills when I use it on Imps etc. Need to get into a groove of switching to a lower powered weapon for them.

And the level design has finally clicked. I'm enjoying picking apart areas, but also having the confidence to move on when I can't work out how to get a Praetor token or whatever, knowing that it will be accessible later on. Takes a while to understand that I'm not just being shit.

Have been reading a little about Doom Eternal now. I realistically won't upgrade to a PS4 Pro for it, but would consider it if load times are any worse next time around.

And I love the sound of the Doom-about-town in Eternal, tearing up demon shit in cities. Won't be a Day One for me, as I'll likely be Doomed out by release. But very much looking forward to it.

That doesn't sound right, from memory nearly everything (or actually everything) is accessible on your current play through any given area.

Can you think of an example?

I can. There are a few times you get locked off from earlier in the level. One tinea door closes you off, another time a fall from a higher area.

There's another time that I'm not totally sure you couldn't, but I sure as buggery couldn't figure out how to get back.

Yes that's what I'm getting at, i.e. Everything should be accessible whilst you're in the area, there's no need to go back and indeed as you rightly say, in a couple of instances you can't go back, and you'd have to run the entire level again.

From what Mr Fop is saying he's leaving stuff where it is thinking he'll go back for it later.

Sorry, what I meant was that you are brought back to it later, but not by backtracking, but by level design.

There are a couple of things on Kadingir Sanctum, like a Rune challenge or Argent Cell which are totally visible, but inaccessible, and, as it turns out, no amount of exploration of the immediate area is going to change that. You have to push on through the level to open the necessary doors etc in order to access them.

Oh right yes, that is entirely the case.

Eternal gets a lukewarm review from Eurogamer.

Though he describes it as essentially Doom 2016 with more bits and bobs. Which is fine for me.

Worth also noting this chap was very critical of Far Cry 5 for essentially being Far Cry again.
