10. God of War: not much to add beyond what others have said, which is that it's a very fucking good video game. Looks incredible, has a great mix of exploration/puzzling/combat and a plot/characters that you genuinely give a shit about. In terms of criticisms, none of which are massively serious:

  • The gear and upgrading aspect of it's needlessly complex and even by the end of the game I wasn't entirely sure whether I should be upgrading certain stuff or just buying (and then upgrading) other things.
  • The optional realms are awful and locking other optional stuff behind that (i.e. the Valkyries) just doubles down which is aggravating. People like different types of stuff so giving optional content is great, but gating one behind the other will just put people off unless they enjoy all the types of challenge you're offering.
  • The difficulty is a bit odd. Playing the main game and normal side quest stuff I didn't die at all (I don't think) but the realm tears and Valkyries will fuck your shit up quick. Well, up to a certain point, given that after finishing the game I utterly ruined a load of Travellers and realm tears that had previously made comedy mincemeat of me. I mean I understand the idea of having this stuff lying around you can choose to take on, but at the start of the game they're almost literally impossible and by the end they become near trivial so just doling them out as the game, and your character/skill, progresses seems like it would make more sense.

It’s a platinum game action beat em up but clogged up with boring investigations, anime style cut scenes with daft dialogue, detective vision, clumsy fighting, too much shit on screen, an AI character that blocks the screen, some poor camera angles in a couple of spots, block pulling/pushing puzzles, crap “puzzles” in general, convoluted menus, a “cleaning your AI” thing for some reason...just too much shit and not enough kicking the shit out of shit.

Oh and a postgame final investigation that wants you to do 71 fucking fights. I can get ta fuck.

God this IGN “review” makes me want to hurt someone. Zero critical thinking.

Did you somehow expect IGN to be good?

*shrug* No idea, I don’t really read IGN. Is there an AP of gaming reviews these days?

I thought it was pretty common knowledge that IGN was trash.

11. Mark of the Ninja: I completed this back in the X360 days but always remember it very fondly and was happy to go through it again on the Switch. It's just as much fun as I remember and if you're into sneaky-stealthy 2D shenanigans then very little can touch this. The only flaw in the experience--which isn't the fault of MotN itself--is that it's yet another game which demonstrates how wrong the Switch default controls are. The number of times I wanted to use a special power and instead alerted a guard to my presence my straight up punching him in the back of the fucking head was too damn high. Goose Game was the same and I'd very often honkingly announce myself to someone I was trying to quietly steal something from. I'm sure if you play the Switch enough you get used to the back/confirm buttons being in the wrong place and whatnot but I don't so it continues to be a giant fucking pain in the dick and it irks me that Nintendo don't think my muscle memory is worth any respect. Twats.

Pretty sure Nintendo had their buttons that way round before the Xbox and PlayStation even existed.

I don’t know, it’s weird how my thumb gravitates to covering the A button on the Switch pro controller (like I cover the X on the PS4/A on the Xbox) despite it not being a million years away in design from the the Xbox controller.

Edit:

It’s probably a Japanese thing in truth. Like how the PlayStation buttons for O & X actually mean yes and no, but westerners still use X to confirm.

They read from right to left don't they? It's always been my understanding that this is the case and it started with the NES having B then A.

12. Deracine: PSVR exclusive by FromSoft (of Dark Souls and Bloodborne fame).

It's an odd one this. There's not much to the actual gameplay and if you were to boil it down to those bones it would sound pretty awful. You play as a faerie who invisibly 'helps' the various children who live in a Victorian style boarding school by performing some basic puzzling and fetch quests. Time appears frozen for you so the actual interaction and dialogue is minimal, generally only a few seconds of sound and movement are restored to the world when you complete a puzzle or trigger a clue; and that's about it outwith the exploration of the house and it's grounds.

Given it's heritage though the real interest--and payoff--for me was the atmosphere of the piece which starts off strong. Although the mansion isn't massive and by definition there's little movement this gives the gameworld a quiet, sad and sinister edge which just hovers over the entire thing and really drew me in. This does exhaust itself somewhere by the end of it's runtime but certainly for the first couple of hours I was utterly absorbed.

Like the Soulsborne games the story you see is really only a tiny part of the world and although the wheels do come off the children's lives pretty quickly (resulting in a chunk of gameplay that suddenly moves well beyond the school) it's the background you never see which is arguably the most interesting part. This is told through environment stuff, item descriptions and vague hints buried in dialogue from the headmaster and others; to the point that to get the full impact of it I had to look stuff up afterwards online. Which sounds like a failure in story-telling and I couldn't argue with anyone holding that position, but something about that level of depth I find very satisfying.

So, difficult to recommend in general, but if any of the above sounds like your kind of thing I reckon there's a lot of enjoyment to be had here and certainly it's an experience which'll stay with me for a while.

13. Detroit: Become Human: the most recent, and definitely the best, David-Cage-em-up.

It's still generally a load of slow exploration, dialogue selection and QTEs so if that's not something you enjoy this one isn't going to change your mind, but it feels more slickly implemented than before and the story/characters are much better than their past efforts. Also, respect to them for actually exposing the game itself via the sometimes massive event trees that you're shown at the end of each level, laying bare your exact path through the various branching paths and showing the amount of content you didn't see. The nodes on the untrod paths are kept blank so you don't know what actually happens in those you never traversed, but it's unusual to see behind the scenes like this and it does show the wealth of content that they've allowed for. Indeed, from looking up walkthroughs later on, there are at least a couple of entire levels you'd never know existed depending on your choices, which is certainly more personalisation than these narrative games are often accused of offering.

Oh, and it's also spectacularly pretty with lovely looking environment and generally brilliantly mapped character models with almost human faces, which goes a long way to selling it as a serious narrative piece.

The only thing really letting it down is the entire 'Kara' story because Jesus fucking Christ can we stop using annoying small children as an awful shortcut for eliciting empathy? I couldn't give a fuck about any of that nonsense and the typical whining coming from The Child meant both I and Mrs B eye-rolled our way through the vast majority of that stuff.

Anyway, the entire piece obviously did something right given that I played through the entire thing in the company of a willing Mrs B who was eager to see it through to the end of the story so take that for what it's worth.

The thing is, her story could've been a genuinely good way to show the impact of all the events on the 'bot in the street' at ground level (as opposed to SuperCopBot and MessiahBot) and it did become that to a degree at the end, but most of it was just the usual lazy bullshit whiny child escort nonsense (aside from the horror house level which was cool) which can GTFF.

That's what happened to me, I think she died crossing the road.

Bamba: what decision did you make with the title screen ladybot?

I said she could go and do her thing; though it strikes me now that I don't know what impact that actually had?

Does it not offer the chance for you to "buy" a new one?

Having just Googled it, apparently after you free the original Chloe and stop/start the game three times you're offered a new hostess. I never spent much time on the title screen so didn't have much interaction there, I didn't even realise she could comment on your game progress.

I found spending time in the title screen very pleasant. She didn't half tell me off when the kid died, though.

8. Under Defeat - Xbox 360. This is an awesome shoot em up which was one of the very last games released on the Dreamcast. It had a re-release on the Xbox 360 which is the version I played here. It's hard, but clearly not impossible once you figure out where the hit point is on your ship. Every time I played it I got a little further on so it wasn't frustrating like some shoot em ups can be. Another good 'un!

9. Tarzan - N64. I've been meaning to play this for ages after seeing the price sky rocket on ebay. I wouldn't if it warranted the high price tag and you know what, it doesn't. A simple platformer where you have to run from left to right for the majority of levels. There's a couple of stampede levels like the original Lion King but they make you run into the camera which is really annoying.

It was easy and I completed it in a couple of hours.

On to the next!

It's not all bad news today...

10. Super Mario Bros - could I have done this without save states? Probably not. Very enjoyable though.

14. Glass Masquerade: a jigsaw game for the Switch (and other platforms) if jigsaws weren't made of small cardboard tiles but instead large, gorgeous, intricate stained glass installations. It's very much the sort of casual nonsense I'm looking for in a Switch games and I thoroughly enjoyed it, though you mileage would vary massively depending on how much you liked that type of thing in general.

Downsides:
- Although it's touch-screen enabled as you'd expect, when you pick up a piece it sits directly under your finger which renders the entire affair impossible. Thus you have to use the slightly clumsy joystick controls instead. It's not much of an issue because the game is hardly fast-paced but if they'd just made it so the pieces floated offset a bit from your actual finger it would've worked a treat.
- The PC version has a load of DLC levels which I'd happily grab but they're not available on the Switch.
- At £11 it's hilariously over-priced on the Switch (as with fucking everything) and not worth that price. It's definitely worth the much more reasonable £4 sale price I paid for it though.

Ooh yes - on a computer it works well (and was about a quid in some bundle or offer, I forget), and I got slightly addicted to it. Also finished!

15. The Lost Ship: I enjoy Syntaxity's partiuclar brand of pointy-clicky stuff because for all the scenes are simple the puzzles are logical and their auto-camera thing is nice. I'd played this one before but I noticed they'd added a new section to the game that was integrated with the previous stuff so played through it again.
16. Hidden Through Time: complete rip off of Hidden Folks' Where's Waldo-ing gameplay and art style but in colour and without quite as much charm. It's still fun and worth it if you enjoyed HF but don't expect it to be quite as good.

I can’t believe they ruined the ending in the sodding title. It’s a twee Nintendo title that’s kinda cute and not very challenging until the final boss who, to be fair, puts up a decent fight when you don’t know what you’re doing. It’s a charming little affair but there’s, perhaps, 2 really big annoyances for me. The final two dungeons have some really really fucking annoying sections. This bit with a ball in particular is more irritating than it needed to be thanks to the game resetting the screens every fucking time you exit, so you keep having to backtrack around the map to get back to where you started; plus some puzzles with orange and blue tiles really outstayed their fucking welcome. Oh and this dungeon with falling through holes on purpose requiring you to have a near superhuman memory of what’s below you is fucking annoying as fuck. Oh and hiding the key to the end game puzzle in the library too amongst a bunch of shit I didn’t want to read. That was twatty too. I’ll be honest, I was a bit fed up with it by then and wanted it over with so I looked up where it was online cause I couldn’t be arsed to go traipsing around the entire map. I’m a filthy casual.

Actually, I’ve changed my mind, fuck this game. 6/10 for being cunty. Pretty nice game though.

Drill for oil, sell oil, find the default AI is massively incompetent. Fairly slow and relaxing, except for when you're spilling oil over the ground.

Theres an expert mode now which might make the ai actually provide even a modicum of challenge, but I'll leave that for now.

17. The Inpatient: VR horror prequel to Until Dawn.

Which sounds like a good deal but really, really fucking isn't. It tries to do the same 'Butterfly Effect' story branching thing but the branches are just binary conversation options so hardly the sort of compelling thing that makes you want to see what the other option does. And outside that the entire game is just long, boring corridor trudges following other characters as they somehow give you too much exposition and not enough at the same time.

So you finish the game incredibly abruptly and with no real idea what happened, but with lots of agonising dialogue from other characters implying a richness of story that you never saw because you were locked in a psyche ward the entire fucking time. But hey, maybe it was a good interactive experience? Nope, it was balls. Walking forward meant holding down a button. Moving left or right meant holding down a button on the other Move controller and waggling it left or right. Walking backward was impossible. You could turn 180 degrees by flicking one Move controller over your shoulder and hitting a button.

Actually using your 'hands' was the worst though. If you moved either of your hands there was a delay in them moving in-game, so you had to swing your hands around a bit befoe they'd become functonal. At that point they'd sort of smash noisily against any nearby surface before grudginlgy picking up whatever you were trying to get them to accept. All of that really enriched the atmosphere as you'd fucking imagine!

As a horror walking simulator it was boring. As a VR game it was horrendously implememted. As a prequel to an existing franchise it added nothing at all in terms of narrative.
So, yeah, it was a massive waste of time and one of the biggest dissapointments in terms of VR games I've ever come across. Given that SuperMassive are an accomplished studio and this reviewed genuinely quite well I'm utterly astonished at how awful it was.

I do have something to say about this game: It's shit. Only redeeming feature is the coop. Particularly when your s coop partner ceases to even be a custard, or you encounter a bug which causes your coop chum to immediately die in vhase sequencees.
We started it on the 19th Feb 2019. Which should give an idea about how enthused we were to play it.

And stupidest moment of the game:

https://youtu.be/aA_rRog88Tw?t=98

"pull the lever on the right hand side" - so you're wanting me to cut the throttle? Odd choice if you want to gain altitude, but ok.

"Pull back on the throttle" Proceeds to pull back on the flight controls...

We died many times there due to trying to pull back on the actual throttle and it not working...

18. Dadish: you're a dad and a radish and you've lost all your kids so you need to play through three sets of short platforming levels and a couple of boss fights to get them all back. Looks lovely, controls really well, has a nice difficulty curve and some of the end of level 'long suffering dad(ish)' chat with your stupid kid(ish) is even genuinely funny. Very good mobile fare all in.

All endings. Rather good this although i dare say some variety was needed towards the end. Still encountering essentially the same enemies as you have for the entire game.

I very much doubt you’ve got all the endings.

19. Off-Peak: A very short and very weird Steam freebie which has you exploring a train station looking for the pieces of a ticket you need to get home. That's just the setup though to force you to explore all the shops and whatnot in the station and interact with all the people there. The graphics themselves are amateurish and ugly but there's very cool very, high quality artwork everywhere which makes large parts of the station feel more like a museum than transit hub. I'm sceptical how much of the artwork is original or licensed given that there's loads of adverts for what I think are very real breweries/beers mixed in there but it's all the sort of modern stuff I enjoy so it made for compelling viewing. The music's also very good and apparently created by the actual band that the developer is a member of. I'd picked this up because the developer's first full length game, The Norwood Suite, caught my eye and Off-Peak leads into it apparently. I'd be surprised if anyone else was to enjoy this but at half an hour or so it was weird and interesting enough to precisely fill the gap in my evening so I'm glad I gave it a shot.

20. The Room VR: A Dark Matter: the latest installment in the long-running puzzle series The Room, and a VR exclusive this time around. As with all the other games, it presents the player with a series of rooms filled with interactive 'things' that require you to solve puzzles to unlock. I say 'things' because what you interact with ranges from an Egyptian sarcophagus to the internals of a church pip organ to a cauldron filled with some kind of semi-sentient ooze so there's certainly variety in that regard. This game nicks the addition to the previous installment, Old Sins, by sometimes allowing you to shrink down and go inside various objects (e.g. the aforementioned pip organ) to futz around with their innards. The sense of changing things on a micro scale to affect the macro is very satisfying and even the transition to the smaller scale is wonderfully done because VR. Anyway, as is probably apparent this one of my favourite game series' of all time so I was absolutely gagging for this, and generally speaking it doesn't disappoint. It feels a lot easier than the previous iterations and, as with almost all VR stuff, it's hilariously over-priced at £30 for a few hours of gameplay but it was incredible fun and is head-and-shoulders above anything else in this genre of I've played in VR. If you've never played any of these games then it's way too pricey to be a jumping on point I'd say, but give one of the earlier games a go (all four are out on iOS/Android with a couple of them ported to Windows and the Switch and at least the first in the series is cheap as shit or even free at regular intervals) and if you're into it then this comes incredibly highly recommended.

Anime-Soulslike in which I really liked the combat but really despised the story and cutscenes. I was not in the mood for that slow talking, pregnant pausing, Japanese bullshit and in the end I was just skipping the cut scenes especially because the characters were meh and the dialogue was just horrible. But the combat is great which giant weapons that make Dark Souls biggest instruments look like toothpicks. The fighting is fun and I really enjoyed knocking about with my AI pal kicking the shit out of folks. Until... the Orstein & Smough copy fight. It would have gone so much better if we both started pounding one boss together but the AI does what the fuck it wants and it almost always fights the boss you aren’t fighting, which is no fucking good. In the end I had to call in the online troops to help because the AI wouldn’t do what I wanted him to do. And even then it was a sodding mess because the bosses are so fucking cheap. One of them has a move that creates fire beneath you even if you’re the other side of the map and aren’t fighting him. You’ll be fighting one boss and whooosh with the fire up the arse. Just unfair nonsense. Anyway, cheesed that boss and everything until the final boss where I called in help again because I’d ran out of patience and just wanted it to end.

So anime-souls was pretty good apart from the anime bit of it which ruined it. So there you go 4/10. No hang on, the tit slider was great. 5/10

14) Call of Duty: MW Warzone (PS4)

I’ve beat this a couple of times now too so it’s done.

21. The House of Da Vinci 2: second game in a series that isn't The Room but is very, very, very similar. I mostly enjoyed this but it suffered from some really irritating puzzles which meant it was a bit of a grind to get through at times. Still incredibly well designed and implemented so totally worth it if you like this style game.

22. The Escaper: an escape room game for Android with 'The Room' style controls and navigation. Well implemented logical puzzles are the order of the day and I bought then blew through the entire thing yesterday after really enjoying the demo. The only real downside is that it weirdly won't safe within a given level so you basically need to finish each level in one go. Not much of an issue with the current situation but if I was trying to play this during my commute it would pretty much be a deal breaker.

23. Escape Machine City: Airborne: more Android puzzley goodness from Snapbreak, one of my favourite mobile devs for all the polished, interesting stuff the release. This is another one in a series that errs on the easier side of the difficulty curve--compared to their Faraway series which is much more challenging--but it's still brilliant fun to work through and the fact I played it for most of the evening until I finished it is testament to that.

A brilliant game. Quite hard if you're used to bloodborne or Dark souls, because your instincts will be entirely wrong (and quite hard otherwise, for other reasons). But when you get your head around it, it's not that hard really. Not even the owl.

10/10 Would play again.
