Last week someone quoted me £303 to replace a part in my boiler.

I've just had someone else do the job for £175 so it pays to shop around.

Still annoyed at having to spend £175 on it though...

Just signed up with Virgin Mobile and hmmmm.

  • Your account password is subject to the usual stuff about needing lowercase letters, uppercase stuff and numbers but it needs to be between 6 and 10 characters. So you literally can't have a password longer than 10 characters! What in the actual fuck?
  • Your secondary information thing has to be between 6 and 20 characters. So fuck you if, for instance, your mother's maiden name is 5 characters or the name of your first school is more than 20.

How is this a thing from a major company in this day and age?

Weirdly my banks password for online banking doesn’t allow capital letters or £&@“ etc characters. A BANK!?

It’s got a second stage to it as you have to insert memorable information, but that’s just letters and numbers too. Very odd I reckon.

The Xbox Adaptive controller is a brilliant piece of kit, just a shame it's so expensive (nature of disability adaptive technology) and limited to the Xbox.

Luckily this dude has the skills to hack his way around that limitation.

Almost all banks in the UK have weird password rules like this.

It's usually because the passwords are not case sensitive - in at least one case (HSBC), a password I entered which was a mixture of uppercase/lowercase letters wouldn't work when entered into their app, I had to convert it all to lowercase when I entered it.

Why does Chinese New Year mean my mate Si has to clean things? He is from Hong Kong for some form of context. I nodded. He goes to clean his ancestors' graves ,too at certain times of the year.

It's because Lunar New Year marks the end of the winter, so it's basically end of the year/spring cleaning. Also, you need to clean BEFORE LNY, because if you clean in the first couple of days after then it sweeps away the good fortune from the mess of firecrackers, red paper etc.

Fun fact we discovered during our first LNY a couple of years back was that you mustn't put decorations up in fours, as 4 is associated with death (the word "4" and the word "death" sound very similar in Mandarin), so it's super bad luck. A very friendly neighbour helped us out there :)

Coronavirus news! Mrs K's mate from Szechuan province said that the Chinese government has told Chinese travel companies that if people want to cancel their travel over the new year period they must refund them - this is apparently completely unprecedented, so she's convinced this means that the outbreak must be considerably worse than anyone thinks.

We're actually starting to get a little worried about this, as the numbers are already growing at a faster rate than they did during the start of the SARS outbreak in 2002/2003...

It does need a pithy name, though. Bat-virus?

I think we're in the stable door/horse/bolted stage now. And China's tendency to be a little economical with the truth on these things is probably going to cause issues again (as it did at the start of the SARS outbreak). The virus already got into various countries in the area, and is now able to be transmitted from person to person, so I think we can expect to have to move the "OUTBREAK" counter along once or twice in the coming weeks.

Although not as terrifying as the deadly bat-virus. Obviously.

Depending on your definition of 'doing something right', it's rarely synonymous with raking it in.

Today's coronavirus update! I could have posted some pictures of bat soup, but let's not do that. Instead, more news from Ms K's mate, this time from her WeChat group back in China:

"One of the Wuhan cases was a woman who was the trolly cafe on the bullet train who was sick 2 weeks before stopping work and didn’t wear mask as it would mean she could not work as “ill” so served food / drink to all ... just think of the thousands of people..."

Eeeep. Still, I'm sure here's a lot of misinformation around. Like the nutcases on Twitter saying it's a bioengineered weapon that China was testing on the Uighurs and was then going to unleash on Hong Kong and Taiwan...

This website is fascinating and also terrifying:

Also, does a mask actually do anything? It doesn't for a cold as I understand it.

On the news this morning they were talking to the last folks to fly out of Wuhan.

Chinese lady "they screened us all before going on the plane, and everyone was wearing a mask"

English dude "there was no screening at all"

I wonder who to believe...

Broadly, yes it does, but it doesn't provide complete protection.

Depends on the study it seems, as always with these things!

https://www.cdc.gov/flu/professionals/i ... idance.htm

"No recommendation can be made at this time for mask use in the community by asymptomatic persons, including those at high risk for complications, to prevent exposure to influenza viruses. "

As I understand it, while a mask does help, it only helps if you wear it all the time and never touch anything...
